Just saw the movie. Pretty impressed. The funny bits are funnier than anything in the Raimi movies, and the relationship stuff is far better. Webb really shines there, and Garfield is a great Peter.
The fights scenes are pretty good and SM feels much more Spider-like, especially
when he makes the web thing in the sewer, and crawls over lizard while webbing him in the school.
Lizard as an imposing villain was kinda "eh." But it was okay considering they had to fit in the origin stuff as well.
I also thought how they presented the initial Lizard transformation was pretty cool.
im planning on watching this movie on thursday afternoon (only day i get a break from working late) hopefully it turns out be at least a high B grade movie.
also, my account just got verified on here, so hello GAFfer!!!

I thought he was kinda a shitty Peter, but a good Spiderman. If that makes sense. I sympathized more with Tobey Peter, but Garfield Spidey had better wise cracks and rocks the costume better.
He was definitely the funnier Peter/Spidey, but
no Jonah
was a bummer. Those were by far the funniest parts of the Raimi films.

That was a bit of a bummer, but they had so much to fit in already. Definitely should be in a sequel.
A cameo on the TV or something would've been nice though.
Also, about the post-credits scene.
I didn't get the impression that it was Connor's "alter-ego." The guy had a fedora and clearly appeared, which didn't happen when Connors last hallucinated. Definitely thought it was Norman.
Just came back from the theater and have to say it was pretty good. The fight scenes are so much better than any of the other Spider-Man movies. The score was at sometimes distracting
such as during the Lizard fight at the school
. Also I didn't like that Peter Parker was a skater and
why did they have to add a citizens of New York helping Spider-Man scene?

That scene was so cheesy, haha. In a movie that wasn't nearly as cheesy as the Raimi movies, that one scene hearkened back to them big time. It's kind of a tradition though, I guess. They even lingered on the shot of the American flag on the side of the building.
I thought that scene worked far better than any of Raimi's attempts at a similar scene, both of his were egregiously terrible. It definitely wasn't necessary, but it didn't take me out of the movie.

Saw this yesterday and I have to say it's too soon to have a remake. You unconsciously compare some of the things and it takes you away from the movie. Even though big portions of the movie are different from the Raimi iteration, the whole package doesn't breath enough new life to the series. The villain feels too much the same to the Osbourne stuff. I totally expect the sequel to be much, much better than this and this kind of felt to be a version that had to be done before moving on to the real meaty sequel without the mandatory introductory parts.

It was pretty good, much better than Spiderman 3, but not as good overall as 1/2. The 75% on RT is fairly accurate imo, maybe should be a little higher for the special effects. That is just my view I didn't think Avengers was all that great up until the last half hour and lots of people seem to love that movie.
Spider Man was pretty awesome, liked it a lot. Definitely tons better than 3, most likely better than the original and have to see it a few more times to say if it's better than the 2nd.
Garfield is a much better Spider Man for sure, both as Peter Parker and in the suit. Emma Stone was excellent as Stacy and their chemistry was great. Highlight of the movie was definitely Spider Man's movements, felt exactly like you would imagine Spider Man to fight/move. Love the web slinging. Lizard Man was sort of weak as a main villain but Connors was alright. Effects were nice too, 3D was decent enough. Humorous parts were actually funny, it had it's own charm to it (you can call it cheese if you want).
Crane scene was awesome, fuck the haters. New York loves their Spider Man. I was totally hyped for Spidey when he
sutures up his bullet wound with the web and the spotlight is on him as he runs across the building and start web swinging from crane to crane.
Very enjoyable movie especially for Spider Man fans.
I loved the first two Raimi films, and I must admit that TASM definitely suffers from inviting constant comparison. There are times when you can practically feel it straining to get away from the earlier films, almost reluctantly and half-heartedly hitting some of the required notes such as
Uncle Ben being killed due to Peters negligence, the 'with great power comes great responsibility' angle (replaced with some boilerplate 'something something responsibility' stuff), pretty much the entire relationship between Peter and Aunt May
.
Of course, I'm of the opinion that Raimi just really nailed the origin and TASM can't compare. Amongst the things the 2002 film did better are the exuberance of Peter discovering his powers, the bond between Peter and Uncle Ben (Sheen does what he can, but ultimately it's like there really wasn't quite enough room for him), the whole amateur wrestling thing which is a great way to introduce Peter to the world of customed fighting (it gets an awkward nod here, just enough for you to realize how sorely this element is missing) and the villain, which storywise is actually shockingly similar, sans Dafoe's infectuous scenery-chewing.
I also miss J. Jonah Jameson, though I suppose Captain Stacy is an interesting addition (even though
it adds a fourth earnest father figure to a tale that already has too many
).
Which I guess is the real problem: Raimi knew how to commit to a tone and stick with it, which meant that even when his films got cheesy and went over-the-top, they at least felt internally consistent (until #3 went of the rails of course, but let's ignore that one): appropriately comic book-y, broad-strokes fun. TASM struggles to retain some of what worked in Spider-Man, most succesfully romance-wise - thanks in no small part to Garfield and Stone, though
the resolution is entirely too similar to the 2002 films ending - I can see how they couldn't resist as that ending was strong and one of the chief reasons I prefer the original to Spider-Man 2, which basically had no ending, but still.
But it mixes it in with semi-dark, brooding stuff that's two parts Batman and one part X-Files. The combination of stilted darkness and earnest cheesiness doesn't work at all, especially when
apparently they couldn't resist putting in their own variation of the you-mess-with-NY stuff
.
One thing I don't understand is why they didn't handle the whole reboot in the same way Batman Forever did. Yeah, I know: BF took many, many steps in the wrong (Schumacher) direction. But what I mean is: at least it didn't attempt to retell the origin stuff. Take that as read, commit to your own story and tone (preferably not the unadultered camp Schumacher heaped on us, of course) and just move on.
I really wish Webb had tried to do something else than the origin story, because the worst part of the movie is definitely all the parts that feel like Raimi's film. Once it breaks away from that, it becomes fucking awesome.
Spider Man was a bitch in this movie. He got slapped around like a ragdoll and got shot by police and dodged and stuff. He didn't seem very amazing to me :-/
I just came from a 3:30 showing and here are my impressions:
The good:
All the scenes with Spider-Man, the web slinging, the fights are very impressive looking. As has been stated earlier, at times it looks ripped straight from the comic pages.
They actually explain how Peter creates his costume, unlike the Raimi film, in which he whips it out with no explanation.
The bad:
The rest of the non SM scenes are dull and lifeless. There's just this dark, morose mood that just doesn't belong in Spider-Man, like it was imitating the style of Nolan's Batfilms. Raimi's films, for all their flaws, at least were entertaining to watch. Garfield's Peter was such a brooding, unlikable character for much of the film which made it difficult to sit through. And Aunt May, an important figure in Peter's life, is essentially wasted in this film.
I'm going to have to agree with the current RT score. It was a really frustrating movie to watch, because while it does some things extremely well, it's ultimately let down by woeful pacing issues and a weak villain (although Ifans is terrific).
The middle act was literally a rotation of three sets, and having so many scenes play out at Oscorp was a ridiculous and unnecessary decision.
It felt like Webb had a really good understanding of the lows, but couldn't manage the high points of the movie. It felt like a movie that was butchered in the editing room to some extent. For instance, when Peter convinces Gwen to come out with him, it's building up to a climax of their relationship - something like when Superman takes Lois Lane out with him flying, or when Aladdin takes Jasmine out on a carpet ride. But instead we see her hanging on to him for one swing, which is abruptly cut leading to the next shot of the Lizard fucking up the school.
The CGI was phenomenal, but even that gets hampered with pacing issues. There were a few distinct scenes of Spider-Man webslinging, which looks great, and the music is blaring and it almost feels like it's building up to something but it doesn't. And speaking of the music, it played the main theme far too much, and even at really inappropriate times.
Finally, all I have to say is that the actors were incredible. Garfield's gamut of emotions was powerful as fuck, and he gave the movie a weight that really trancended the comic book movie genre. Like I said, this movie does the 'lows' really well.
I want to see a sequel for the simple fact that the people involved in this movie can come together to make something incredibly special. While this movie created the definitive Spider-Man, they need to get a better cinematographer, give the villain strong and clear motivations, and nail the 'highs'. But until then, I'll be rewatching my Raimi films.

To be fair Spiderman does get fucked up in the other films too.
I just saw this and love it....but I like anything Spiderman related. Have enough cool spiderman shit and I'm satisfied. The emotional scenes and some of the side stuff was awkward or just bad but who gives a shit...It's Spiderman yo.
Yeah the Lizard was a bit Defoey at times and the beginning was a bit slow but nice movie. Not the greatest (SM1 or SM2..not sure which is better) but solid flick.
Just saw it a second time and it's still as incredible as the first time. Fascinating though how the 3D depends on the theater, I saw it the first time at a premiere 2 weeks ago, and there were 4 digital projectors, so it was super bright and the 3D was fantastic, plenty of depth.
Here, I saw it at my usual theater, Real D (active system in the other theater), it was dark as usual, I was sitting pretty far back, and it was totally different, practically all the non-action scenes could be perfectly seen in 2D, which was weird and there was very little depth compared to my first time. However, the 3D was still spectacular in the action scenes, POV shots (wish there was more of it), and webslinging (especially crane scene) is amazing.
I had seen 6 min of it too (sneak peek) in IMAX 3D and there was plenty of depth even in the hallway scene btw Gwen and Pete at the highschool.
To be fair Spiderman does get fucked up in the other films too.

I'm excited for what they could do without being hampered by the origin stuff. Given more time to develop the villain , it could be great. I hope they don't immediately jump into Green Goblin and we see something new if/when there's a sequel.

, saved several lives, and kinetically swung around New York?
Keep in mind that
Peter was deliberately trying to avoid seriously injuring Dr. Connors when they were fighting
until the
end, of course, when he had no other choice
. And to be fair,
he did land a few blows against Dr. Connors
.
On top of that, Peter's still learning how to use his abilities and engage in combat. Why would you expect him not to get injured at some point? It shows vulnerability. Without it, it'd make for terribly boring action.

released a promotional scene where Peter argues with Gwen's doorman. In the movie he just shows up at her window saying "Your doorman was intimidating." It comes across as a silly joke, but if you've seen the doorman fight, it's jarring. Similarly, the casting shows that Connors' son was cast, but he doesn't show up in the movie. Doesn't even get a mention
That brings me to what I may as well get out of the way - my biggest problem with the film. Spiderman is a cunt. The movie tries to get you to empathize with his situation of losing his parents and how depressed/aggravated he is, that it loses focus on the fact that we're suppose to respect him. I don't respect Peter in this movie, because he acts like a little twat and never becomes a man in the film. I know many will groan at me bringing up the Raimi films, but remember how Peter moved out of his Aunt's place and would struggle for jobs just to keep his head above water, whilst desperately trying to do the right thing by everybody else? It wasn't because Peter is a perfect saint - it's because at that point in his life, Peter is really learning what responsibility means. He's becoming a man. A SPIDER-MAN! I won't spoil why Garfield's Peter doesn't come across this way, but I'll just say that the 'With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility' is totally lost in this film. There is definitely a weight on Garfield's Parker in this film, but it isn't responsibility.
This is an interesting point you bring up and I feel (hope) it's something they're going to explore in the sequel.
I'm kind of astonished at how Peter doesn't have any 'moment' with Aunt May. There's a lot of tension between them throughout, but it doesn't get resolved and I think that was crucial to the arc of Peter's growth and why some people have commented on him coming off as dickish and irresponsible. Instead of being hit with regret over how he's been so distant from May to deal with other matters, his attitude even in the end is very much a sombre 'deal with it'.
Good, people are getting tried of these shitty dime a dozen comic book movies.
I'm sure it will be the #1 movie this week because of the budget & advertising, but it probably won't top any of the Raimi movies.
