Well, it's downloading. I'll join you guys in a bit, after a nap.
Edit. Same with SW.

How is it better than other card games on iOS? All the previous ones I've tried are so laborious.

It's like chess with more action and cards. It works perfectly for async because there is quite a bit you can do, and all the completely different factions have various mechanics and themes. Also, like 15 gaffers are playing it and will be playing it regularly for months, like Ascension/Carc. :D game is free, need to buy 1 faction to play online (free game has 1 in it), everything together is 8 bucks (totally worth it, sice that would cost >50 for the real life game it's based on)

Plus, the devs are awesome and great help.

Is it easier/funner to use/play than Ascension? I lasted like an hour on that game. The furthest I've gotten with an iOS Card Game was Food Fight. I loved the shit out of it but even that became just too cumbersome to play.

Also of note, I play mostly on iPhone.

Wow at Outwitters. Love at first play for me. Talk about taking excellent advantage of the demand for a-sync gameplay. Wonderful so far -- absolutely deserving of Apple's accolades.

It's only a card game in so far as you draw your units from a deck. You then place them on the board and it's tactical combat.

It's a snore. Ugly, slow, and no offline play (no AI.) PlayDek was robbed!

How's Outwitters' learning curve? Is it easy for a casual like myself to pick up and play?

Absolutely, it's much easier to pick up and play than Hero Academy or most other async games. The teams share the same five units plus one unique unit so it is much easier to know what you might have coming at you.

I don't understand the ugly comments. Sure the art style might not fit your tastes but it is a bit disingenuous to say that it is ugly. I have a feeling that there are several factors that lead to a game being considered for the Editor's Choice. One of those is probably appeal to casuals, which Outwitters does much better than Summoner Wars.

I can tell its a good game with a lot of depth. But on the flipside, there's too much for casual people and doesn't feel accessible at all.

Maybe for boardgame people, and people who like games like Hero Academy or Final Fantasy Tactics type may like and get this game more? But for people not into these games (or hate randomness) may not find Summoner Wars fun at all. Definitely not a game for anyone.

Yeah, Summoner Wars isn't a complicated game, but it also isn't an easy game since there is so much variety to the cards found in the game. It's definitely not for everyone (which is what I assume you meant to say:), and will take a few plays to grasp. But if you're willing to give the game some time, it pays off. The game is excellent.

SW definitely isn't easier than Ascension. Whether or not it's more fun or not is personal preference (it's probably too early to say, but I still like Ascension more). I'm going to guess that SW isn't for you. You may enjoy a more straight forward game like Outwitters.

How's Outwitters' learning curve? Is it easy for a casual like myself to pick up and play?

Yes, but with no AI to learn how the game works it can be a bit daunting jumping in and getting crushed by other players. Personally I'm having an easier time grasping SW because there is an AI to mess around with (and I have played SW once before, different factions). I should also note I'm no good at (nor like) RTS games which I think has a big impact because right now I don't quite 'get' Outwitters. Seems fun, but also very "samey". There's little difference between teams and each game starts exactly the same with no randomization element, just a few different maps.

I'm not sure an opinion can be labeled disingenuous. I personally think Outwitters looks like a Newgrounds game from 2003. I couldn't get past the visuals to even finish one game. I won't say it's a bad game, because I didn't give it a fair enough shot to form an informed opinion. However, I will dang sure say it's ugly.

-_-

I'm not stupid, but I also don't have a lot patience for this sort of game on my phone. I want to, you know, just open it and play something for ten minutes, not study for an hour and then play.

If you're playing Summoner Wars on a phone, I can imagine it's pretty a little more daunting. I think it's a lot easier to get into on the iPad.

Agreed.

Fuck spending a long time learning how to play a game on my phone. Bad UI and a ridiculous learning curve are two killer points.

How is it disingenuous to say a game I find ugly is ugly? It's obviously an opinion. One which I completely agree, by the way. To me it looks like a flash game with terrible art. But again, that's just my opinion.

Next to Summoner Wars the game is just so... blargh. And Summoner Wars didn't even get featured. Sigh...

Dragon Fantasy (probably only to bubnbob then :P) - does anyone know where the final key is? I need to go into the volcano thing and there's a key I need, but I've not heard about it until now. Any clues?

Disingenuous might have been too strong of a word to use, apologies to anyone it offended. I don't believe calling the game ugly is giving it or the developers a fair shake at all. Especially when comparing it to Summoner Wars (which I enjoy) but which also has inferior UI and not the best card art I have seen in a popular card game. Comes down to taste I guess, my bad.

Besides, it is pointless to argue about iOS async games because Pocket Heroes comes out next week and it will clearly be the best one hands down. Who can say no to async dungeon crawling?

Oh wow that sounds so good.

Nah, it's alright man. I wasn't offended. :)

Summoner Wars isn't that great looking either, I agree, but it just looks more polished to me. Little touches like animated backgrounds are nice, and while I'm not a big fan of the art, it's still leagues better than Outwitters in my opinion.

And Pocket Heroes does looks very promising.

Did you do the pirate back and forth? Go into the bar/pub/club at the town nearby and talk to people.

Summoner Wars has one of the BEST UI's of all iOS boardgame ports. If you think it's bad your issues are with the boardgame, not with the app itself :p

OMG @ Tiny Wings 2 next week. I'm freakin' out man. The past few days playing Ski Safari I've had an urge for some TW, this is an awesome surprise.

Played ski safari just long enough to beat astro :). Hopefully get in more time this weekend.

What is everyone's most flips? I got 11, prob could have been 12 but wanted to make sure I stuck the landing.

I just hit 34k m/1.7mil points. Not sure about flips. Still haven't even done the double on a yeti.

That's a sweet score. My yeti double flip achievement glitched, and I got it automatically at the beginning of a run whilst starting with a yeti. Oops. But yay. That mission sucked.

Summoner Wars is the best Playdek game yet. Not because of implementation, which is on par with previous efforts (except for notifications, that now take you directly into the match), but because of the game itself.

Now, I somewhat enjoy Ascension and Nightfall, but with light deck customization, a bunch of very different factions and cards coupled with it's tactical gameplay (which is right up my alley) it aims to provide a flexibility and replayability unmatched by previous efforts.

It's very async friendly and offers the accessibility of Ascension, a satisfying tactical gameplay with plenty of different approaches and the deck customization aspect of Magic 2013 (even though it's not the main focus). What's not to like?

This one is a keeper!

I only wish Playdek would put more effort into the single-player aspect of their games. I know it's not the focus, and they are doing a fine job at delivering the real thing on iOS, but for me it worked very well in Magic and it could have made Summoner Wars a better game too. A little flavor and incentive to play by myself is all I'm asking.
