WindowsCentral: Bungie's Marathon is doomed

I get that you're trying to be humorous and everything but, Forever Winter at least has a solid art style.

Played 3 matches of Arc Raiders and... everything looks and plays so vanilla, so boring, so generic that I deleted it immediately.
Drones, ball servos and turrets for enemies ? World that looks like a spin on Bethesda's Fallout ?
I think the only way you could have fun with it is if you're middle-aged and solely get it to play it with the boys® at night before your wife enters the room slapping you in the face with a slipper for being too loud on the mic 😉
I just found it to be oh so very soulless and boring.

As for Marathon, I have no opinion on how it plays but, the esthetics are at least on point for me since I do like minimalistic shit and Bungie's graphic designers/artists are top notch - just seeing the various corpo logos make me hard.Music also sounds good to me so the only thing that's left is the gameplay which I obviously haven't tried.
ARC is the old farts hope, but the vast majority will have moved on in 3 months and the game will practically be forgotten, just like the old farts.

It's crazy how big of a downgrade Arc Raiders got from its initial reveal to what it looks like today:

You couldn't have picked a worst quality IGN video upload with which to draw your comparison though. I've watched a few other higher quality vids and the game looks much better than that.

If Marathon is not a good game, what are the options for Sony?
- try to sell it and get poor sales;
- make it free and hope it will evolve after a while

It's because there are essentially different games.

It started off as a Co-op looter shooter, almost a helldivers type experience then it became an extraction shooter.

The latter requires concessions.

I haven't a clue who this Jez guy is, but everyone slagging him off in here seems to be completely blind to the obvious incoming failure of the Marathon game for some reason. The reveal has been a disaster. So what, you think Bungie are going to magic it into being what everyone wants to play by release?

Because it is. It's a good game, but generic nonetheless.

People are just hopping on the bandwagon like usual and in a year everybody will play dumb.

It's still not up to the quality of the original reveal though. Which indicates the original reveal was probably a BS CGI demo made to look like gameplay

I'm not sure what about being an Extraction shooter required such a massive downgrade in visual quality.

What specifically about Extraction shooters is so taxing on performance, and particularly GPU performance, that they had to downgrade so much?

AR is so fking cool man. Thanks again HeisenbergFX4 HeisenbergFX4 for the invite. Played a few rounds and I can tell you it's truly something special. I hope there's a ton of content coming. Haven't felt immersion like it in gaming since the first day playing the DayZ mod spawning near Cherno at night, in the rain, with a flare, can of beans, and a bandage calling out for survivors.

Even if you say its not generic, its not the kind of graphic that will appeal to the majority and make people want to buy the game, let alone paying for the already ugly looking skins.
Honestly I think their look is targeting a certain audience and that includes people that need protection from proximity chat by their safety and compliance team

not sure how marathon's look can considered generic

Bungie have incredibly talented artistic teams and for whatever else you can say about Destiny over the years it has generally had remarkably strong artistic direction. Their environmental work is of such a high standard. I've never been into Destiny but whenever I've watched reviews and retrospectives on any of the Destiny updates I was almost always struck by how stunning and varied their environmental art was. It's really not easy to keep coming up with art that is really interesting and varied.

I think Marathon looks great and has very, very striking art and design across the environments, logos, fonts, objects, characters etc. They've clearly really tried hard to come up with something different and I have no idea how anyone could call it generic when I cannot recall seeing anything that looks like it, taken as a whole.

If you don't like it, that's fine of course. That's just an opinion, as is my view. But is generic *really* the right description?

Because it is. Playtested it with mates yesterday and it's poor's people Tarkov with robots and very clunky 3rd person animations. And let's not act as Finals by the same team became a huge hit.

Once again, Marathon may be not my cup of tea, but Bungie somehow slavaged Halo 2 and Destiny, so it's not like it's their first rodeo.

Bungie and MS together did great things. Bungie hasn't done anything away from MS that has interested me. DEstiny is cool I guess but not an experience I want.

arc is more impressive in terms of QOL, i think the devs thought alot during the dev process.
cant say the same about marathon, dont even have solo mode LOL

Looks prettt awesome to me. I love the neon techy stuff. And they already flirted with a lot of that when doing Destiny

I like Marathons Aesthetic more i like worms creating the shells, the art style is more intriguing to me, the world is more intriguing to me too me its not even a discussion. Arc has very brown and grey colors that I don't like , i like seeing more stylized color scheme.

The being said ARC has CLEARLY represented itself way better than marathon. Like I'm looking forward to Marathon, but the only thing that I've seen from ARC that i dislike has just been that it's 3rd person and the aesthetic.

I like cyberpunk, the weirdness in the QR code aesthetic that Marathon has got going forward it, like the picture above is my screen saver. It gives me ghost in the shell vibes i fuck with it heavy.

But beyond that ARC you can create your character, its more PVE focused , i prefer marathon PVP gun play just from what i watched more arena based. But ARC caters more to what players want.

I think they will both find an audience but I do think Arc will be the definitive extraction experience on console though. Cause from some of the discussions i've had on the Marathon discord with people especially in DMs with people who've played the game , Marathon is tactical similar to like Rainbow six siege and that communication is key you have to be more patient and methodical. Looking at Arc not saying you cant play that way but this looks more like it will bring in the casual player which is the much bigger audience , you can solo que etc.

Bungie has too bank on these raid objectives/Destiny raid like battles or bosses when the full game comes out cause we still haven't seen that. But people are going to flock more to easily accessible game, more casual friendly game, more of a lively world type of game, a game that caters to player expression...Arc has those things.

Ill be getting both.
