EVO 2012 Thread 2 Because one thread wasnt enough to hold all the hype and the salt

I'd be surprised if it even got SFxT treatment like that...the cutscenes alone are enough to make me raise an eyebrow, but the regular game play was enough to make me not care about ever seeing the game again. I'm not saying my opinion is the right one, but if it's as bad as I think it is, MK players will realize it pretty soon after release and not move from MK to Injustice.

At the very least, it looks well below MK, in terms of the fighting engine.

Some guys from the MK community said they loved the game, but at the same time, Mike Ross and Gootecks said it was horrible. We need to see the complete package to give the final word, I have faith in them because they really care about the community and are always asking for feedback. They just need to put an option that disables the stage gimmicks, that awful ''meter betting'' clashing mode and the stage transitions so it will be viable for tournaments.

james chen and magus1234 talk too goddamn much.

and yes, overall the presentation needs some work. the cross-counter segments looked pretty nice, they need to bring some of that polish to the live show.

also, why did they get rid of the dual-setup? button checks are the worst.
best sunday commentating for me goes to aris+markman. scv top8 was slept on in general, probably because of the time slot and because its scv. i have a lot of sf bias, so it takes a lot for me to admit that scv top8 was probably (almost, maybe) better than top8 ae. although ae pools/quarters/semis was top notch.

SCV - another solid showing. I almost wish I had given the game a chance as I love how meter works and that Prryha(SP?) chick is hilarious.

SFxT - awful and pretty much the culmination of everything that is wrong with the game sans gems. 1v1 might have helped but I doubt it would have made much of a difference

MK - A little uneven but still pretty entertaining. I don't see it making EVO again as a main game though.

VF - loved seeing it on stream and we got some nice El Blaze and Shun play out of it. The grand finals weren't super competitive but it Fuudo is a beast.

KoF - no words, best top 8 of the night. Everyone played hard, it was exciting, and it delivered on all levels. The Kof chant was fairly touching as well. So glad to see the game getting the respect it deserves.

UMvC3 - Really solid top 8 although it seemed to be defined by mistakes and nerves at times. Still incredibly high level play and mad exciting to end. No patch needed

SSFIVAE2012 - Not a great end to the night, but there were a couple of solid matches and Infiltration was a beast. I'm really interested to see what happens to IV going forward. I don't the US scene is as invested in it as they were. Even the Japanese players seemed somewhat muted. The real passion seemed to come from Korea, China, and Taiwan. I think SFxT was really meant to take SF4's torch. Players just seem a little burned out on it.

I pretty much agree with everything you said here. KOF3 was a total surprise and that UMvC3 finals was insane. We're probably going to see SFxT next year, but I'm hoping they don't do it as a team based affair.

And that's really not fair. The semis for AE were more hype, and there's something seriously wrong with scheduling if that's the case.

Starting the finals at 10 was a mistake. They should have started earlier, so they could finish earlier. It benefits the viewers, and the players.

sucked worse for the East coast. it was 3AM when it was over. now i'm tired as fuck at work...lol

I won't lie, I passed on the SF4 finals because it was too late. I think they need to have a finals each day instead, keep focus.

From my perspective of being a manger in a customer service industry, I believe they could have helped improved the scheduling by doing the following.

-The intros of TTF2, and other commercial openings should have been put AT the beginning of the day.

-Double back on the franchises that's on-going and set up the next tournament, which will decrease the amount of time spent prepping after the last tourney mash up.

-Take aim and goal for a set of time frame when the finals going to take place. I felt the coordinators was just letting things turn out along the flow, which, their not doing a very good job being a "coordinator"

Suggestions,
-Learn from this years EVO and try and expand the amount of days the actual damn event is taking. Each year, the population of this event expand exponentially, meaning:

-> More people -> More participants -> Need more time to register and be put into pools.

Which brings up to the next golden solution,

Make evo 4 days than 3.

(But of course, that will indeed justify additional costs on the behalf of sponsors, which if I was that company[ies], I want to conserve and get the cheapest invoice I can possibly get. ( that's the sad truth, it's still all about politics and shit with these people).

Lastly,

- Time the pools a lot more earlier. Seriously.

For Injustice, I'd love to see Netherrealm include tournament dipswitches. Giving the community the option to choose what they'd like in the game. I'd prefer players keep all the game mechanics, but have the option to reduce super cinematics and in-match cinematics.

i don't know man. Is there any reason for such a niche fighting game such as Persona to take a spot in EVO? I doubt it even reaches the level of BlazBlue and , BB wasn't at EVO this year.

Atlus is definitely gonna push it harder than they did The King of Fighters XIII.
Free shirts AND free glasses for everyone.

Yes this. The current persona 4 glasses replicas are quite expensive though if they give them out at an event like evo I'm making the trip

if a shitty Persona fighting game takes the spo of KOF i'll be pissed.

There's no way any game is replacing KOF next year.
Even when Atlus isn't giving away free shirts to everyone, it's always the 3rd/4th biggest game at every major.

I doubt they'll give it this level of support next year though, so there'll definitely be a lot less entrants.

Why would MK players move on to Injustice? They are MK fans/players not Neatherealm Studio players.

You can't say they aren't NRS players when there's only one NRS (Current incarnation, named such, under WB, etc.) game.

Most MK sites including the tournament focused testyourmight.com are covering it, and if it comes down to Injustice or no NRS game, I imagine they'll support the company.

I really don't think the popularity of KOF is riding on free shirts. :P

Not actual popularity, especially after those finals, but entrants were inflated by the shirt, for sure.

I'd like to see, when looking back at EVO12 an entrant number for KoF that takes into account the byes (if not 2-0s?).

You don't know what you're talking about. KOF should stay, but P4A, as far as my JP friends have been telling me, is anything but shitty.

It's niche, but I don't see how it's more niche than BB. The Persona brand alone does a lot for it, and the game itself is supposed to be super legit.

That finals day was really freaking long. They definitely need to work the schedule out better and get it done quicker or split it up so that we have finals each night or Saturday night and Sunday.

Doing Top 8 double elimination for 4 games back to back was an awful idea.

Best duo goes to Aris & Markman but Shidosha was absolutely the single best commentator all weekend, especially once LA_Akira got on the mic.

Yea the shirts are just a really sweet bonus, most of the players love the game.

I love KOF and I was happy to see it be successful, but even I will admit that there was a large amount of players that only registered just for the shirt. FR getting 400 entrants for Marvel and 160 entrants for KOF while Evo got equal entrants for KOF and Marvel (if I remember correctly) can't be attributed to "people just loving the game" in my opinion.

Oh yeah, another thing.

I think the I Wanna Be The Guy: Gaiden pre-show exhibition was such a great way to kick things off. Freaking amazing spectacle, really.
Does anyone know if IWBTG:G was just a short snippet of a longer game? With all of the Evo branding in it and what seemed like custom remote commands, it looks like it was tailored specifically as a showcase event and nothing more.

In any case, I want more of that.

Well next year, I'm definitely going to EVO. (My very first one). Maybe they can learn and correct the scheduling from this years.

Haven't exactly been to Vegas before. Any tips of what I should bring / do? What to expect?

I think they want every game to get its shine on the main stage (in our case, the main stream). So I don't think that Sunday schedule will ever change, unless they decide to do some top 8s on Saturday.

My roommate and I are going to try and do the same.

It still would've been the 3rd or 4th biggest game (behind Street Fighter X Tekken), no doubt, but there is no way it would've gotten over 1000 people without the free shirts.
I think 500-600 probably would be a good estimate of how many people cared about the game regardless.

Same, will be attending next year for TTT2.

I agree, they're really going to have to put some thought into how they run the schedule next year.

Watching AE right now, jeez Poongko played really bad :(

And he looks like a totally different person, last year he was hella energetic and hyped, this year even on Friday he looked like a zombie, mhe :(

I have no doubt that the number of entrants for KoF13 were inflated due to the free shirts but dont count out the number of international players that entered because they love KoF13.

No offense bro, but in some parts of Europe, people make monkey noises when a black player gets possession of the ball, is that acceptable? For me, the gaming community has always been the most open and accepting group of people anywhere, as we ourselves know what it feels to be marginalized and ridiculed by the mainstream. I think it is the responsibility of all us to educate others that we don't accept bigotry, racism or hooliganism , we are different, we are better

You're missing the point. The Europeans you're speaking about are offending a specific group of players doing something racially offensive about said players' ethnicity. Mexicans are simply chanting a generic expletive that's hurled at anyone from any opposing team. There's no ulterior intention to personally offend a group. They don't go "an Asian player is on the stage, we'll chant something that specifically offends Asians".

I think a lot of the misunderstanding is coming from people who aren't aware of the expletives, look up their dictionary definitions, and assume the chanters are taking the definition literally. They're not.

he was free except for one round

Why not? Tougeki does it. If it was "what the scene wanted" you would see Gundam Vs. in there since has been at the top of the arcade rankings forever. Yet, you don't.

I think the sponsors would come regardless.

Evo isn't Tougeki though. Evo is very much centered around the American fighting game scene and their tastes. VF and KOF have never been super popular series in the US and only recently have their publishers tried to get people interested. I feel like it worked for KoF but VF is still as unpopular as it has always been with a very small player pool.

The "better" game is entirely subjective anyway and VF has never been a big hit in America and wouldn't get the amount of interest, participants of level of competition as Tekken would.

It's hella late man. Shit I'm a totally different person when I'm sleepy. Groggy and bitchy is usually what my wife tells me.
