I tried the PC demo today. WOW. In all my years of PC gaming I have never seen such shitty job at mapping controls. There is not even a option to remap them and they seemingly went out of there way to make the default controls obscure. There is a flat symbol with two raised edges I still cant find on keyboard.
Looking around the internet, the trigger problems with third party 360 controller seems to be a known issue. Just a word of warning to others, I'm probably going to have to resort to mouse and keyboard
People like the convenience of a console, being hooked into their big screen tv? I know you can do that with a PC, but not everyone brings their beast desktop into the living room.
Aiming with the mouse makes headshots pretty easy, naturally, and it is pretty fun watching the robots attack each other as a result.
Finished the game yesterday. Ending spoilers:
I ended up with an ending where Bo stayed loyal to me and I'm fairly certain he lived. Cain didn't come back, which is interesting because I thought his trust in me was very high. When the Major pulled the trigger I actually hoped the gun was empty and I'm sure everyone called the Major turning around saying "We're here to take this technology, not destroy it!" I also thought Dan would be revealed as a Hollow Child and I thought it was funny the characters joke about it.
Mouse and keyboard. There's an out of game config tool, change the settings, lower the sensitivity (but it's got really shitty mouse acceleration you can't get rid of)
So far I really love the game but holy shit some of these boss fights are frustrating and dumb.

Beat this yesterday thanks to Amazon. Pleasantly surprised. The story kept me going and the game was running smoothly except for some massive slowdown on one of the boss fights. One thing I wish they changed was only being able to level up Dan's Assualt rifle. I wanted to upgrade the secondary weapons. There is no chance Sega goes back to this right with their new outlook and all that?
Shame that I'm in the UK and shitty paypal locked my account. I closed it a long time ago but made a new one yesterday to pay a gaffer for buying me Bully. Today I got an email telling me that my account has been locked and I can't remove my card details. Thank god I didn't add any money to them since they would've frozen it all. Fuck you paypal motherfuckers.
I wasn't really feeling this at first, but it's growing on me. The destructability makes the generic robot soldiers really satisfying to fight. Headshots are a lot of fun, since you get the great "ping" sound effect and the robot turning on his allies.
Picking your squadmates has turned out to be more interesting than I expected, too, since you have an interesting tradeoff between who you think will be most suited to the upcoming level, who you want to increase trust with, and the chemistry between the two characters you pick.

Amada took control of him. In the "best" ending, he'll come crashing through the roof before the final boss and join you, and he'll be the one taking the hit for Faye (without dying).
Finished it the other night. Easily one of my favorite games of 2012 so far. The shooting felt right, the dialogue was hilarious, and the story was surprisingly interesting.
I'm curious, did anyone bother to level up their allies weapons? I focused on my own for pretty much the entirety of the game and was tearing through enemies. Is their upgraded weapon actually noticeable?

Tech-GAF, can anyone tell me why the cutscenes in this game look so great? Talking about the PC version. I'm used to cinematics in my PC games dropping to 720p, 30FPS with awful compression artifacts - even Max Payne 3's cutscenes look significantly worse than gameplay and there are eight gigabytes of them in that game - but Binary Domain looks awesome all the way through. The cutscenes obviously dip to 30FPS, and there are different filters and I think maybe a drop in resolution, but I can't see any junky compression anywhere. Is it doing them in-engine, on the fly? I'm guessing that's the case, because I can't find any cutscene-looking files in the game's install file.

Yes, all cutscenes are obviously using the in-game engine and there's no pre-rendered content at all. The framerate during the cutscenes is sadly locked at 30 FPS but the cinematography is pretty exceptional for a video game.
The cutscenes were probably animated at 30 FPS to keep the framerate constant on the consoles; keeping it the same on PC saved them the trouble of checking for and correcting any timing issues that might arise from doubling the framerate.
The cutscenes in modern Rockstar games are also always 30 FPS (the GTA IV series anyway). Probably many other multi-platform games too.
On the other hand, the framerate may also be a bit of an artistic choice as was suggested. We all know how real-life content shot at 60 FPS always looks "cheap" compared to the movie-like impression of the 24 FPS used in movies and fictional TV series. Personally I think video games are a considerably different case, but who knows how the cutscene director thinks?

I've been pleasantly surprised by this game. I actually like it more than Gears because the story and characters aren't just dudebro space marines doing dudebro things. Too bad the movement and shooting don't feel as good.
And does Faye's voice bother anyone else? It doesn't sound remotely like a Chinese person (no, not stereotypical ones -- actual real ones) and it's really jarring. It sounds like an accent I can't seem to finger though.

Agreed. It was also cool to have a relatively normal sheriff guy to provide by-stander commentary and being just baffled for most of the game as you are blasting through his town like some action hero while all he's interested is keeping peace.
Shooting robots is kickass! Kinda gets to easy after a few weapon upgrades tho. A lot of eye rolling moments for me tho. Didnt seem the voice recog. was all that great to begin with, standard commands worked well. AI sure the hell didnt improve as you up'd affection?! with your troops. They love getting in front of ya.
Absolutely fantastic game. Bought it day one and one of the few titles that i will not put on the chopping block. But i do have one gripe.... godawful boxart.
I just got this yesterday and I have a couple questions:
What are the hidden datapad things for?
When I get a jackpot at the upgrade machine, what do I win?
If you've got a decent PC to play it, it's definitely worth it. The game's beautiful on a fairly modern rig, and compared to some HD videos I've seen that had been captured from PS3 or Xbox 360, the difference is pretty dramatic.
(edit: I initially said "absolutely beautiful" but decided that it wasn't really true. The game does have some rather simple texturing work at times and I guess not everything about the graphics is quite state-of-the-art. Yet, compared to the console versions, the PC one does look quite a bit better and sharper.)
And obviously, if you want to play it with a gamepad, the game has a full Xbox 360 controller support.

Multiplayer is good, but almost completely dead. There's a steam group of people to arrange play times with. Don't know how reliable that is. I played it when the game was first released and had some life to it. Hoped that would come back for a while with the sale, but it didn't. Maybe it'll be a steam achievement for the summer sale.
Just finished it (pc version). This wins the 'biggest surprise of 2012' award for me. Amazing game, loved the characters, banter and combat. The upgrade system felt kinda janky to me, as in I didn't see much difference when I upgraded my partners. The shooting itself was satisfying enough. I can see myself playing through it again when I upgrade my pc.
In my ending
Cain was gone and Bo died
I think my favorite segment was
when you need to wait for Shindo while he's taking a dump.
PC for best framerate and image quality; 360 for next-best framerate and image quality; PS3 for free console online and an awesome installation sequence.
