New New Super Mario Bros 2 trailer

So the coins really don't do anything? you just...collect them with no rewards other than seeing the number go higher and higher? a real shame

I recall reading that the goal of the game was to collect one million Coins. I'm not exactly sure why you will need that much, though. There's also Coin Rush, a mode in which you challenge your friends to collect more Coins than you can across three levels.

I don't think that's terribly interesting, but perhaps the level design will change my mind. I think Nintendo should focus less on appealing to nostalgic customers and try to make a different kind of Mario side-scrolling game. I love seeing Raccoon Mario and Reznor as much as the next guy, but I want something new.

Different music and art styles would suffice.

I think the coin collection aspect is actually going to bring a lot to the experience.

In fact, I feel like getting 1 million will come far quicker than people are expecting. You can get several hundred coins just in a single level, from what I can tell. Most people will probably hit the million mark just from regular play, without having to grind.

At the very least it's SOMETHING new to an otherwise rehashed, recycled formula that Nintendo is so hell-bent on sticking with for their star mascot.

Several hundred coins per level would barely get you a tenth of a million if you don't grind. So you'd have to use the inevitable exploits eventually, which would render the whole gimmick kinda pointless. The million coins thing is almost certainly an extra, though.

I'll probably get it. It'll be fun, though probably a bit uninspired. The coin sound effect will however get on my nerves after a while and no doubt those near me will want to throw my 3DS out the window.

TBH I can't fully judge this game until I see the later levels and their design, but at least it's looking better than the original NSMB which is a good sign.

And lol @ some people saying 'The coin stuff looks pointless/stupid' and then saying 'Looks exactly the same as NSMB did'.

Travel between worlds by cannon is now a level it seems.
Big Mario is an idea that made sense visually, pushing horizontal pipes to open the way in the underground was interesting, they should build on that.
What I look forward for the coins fest is the follow the path mechanics, can get you in cool situations and superplay.

I don't think I could call myself "excited" about this game, but I'm still probably going to enjoy it.

The confusion about what "the point" of collecting coins baffles me; what's the point of doing anything in games? It's an objective to accomplish, which, in theory, should be fun. I don't know whether it will be fun, I guess that remains to be seen.

I'm more interested in the concept of amassing coins in a competitive sense. It seems designed to encourage strategic and precise playthroughs of levels, moreso than in any other Mario game before this one.

Even if there's no amazing unlockable for getting 1 million coins (there probably will be something), I'm okay with this. I like to make my own fun, I don't need my games to tease me with carrots.

That coin sfx is really going to get old, really fast. I was thinking of picking this up but it still looks exactly like every other NSMB game.

There have only been two so far! One was three years ago, the other was six years ago.

Also, I hope it's more like Wii than DS as far as level design and difficulty toward the end. I'm sure it will be, though. NSMB DS was such a rough draft, looking back.

I have a feeling they think the coins simply serve as one-ups, not looking at the big picture.

It's nice that they're finally implementing support for score/time attacking, but this still looks like the most unambitious Mario platformer to date.

Hmm... how many levels were in the last NSMB game? I run through every level at least twice, (once with Mario, once with Luigi) but I didn't actually pause to do the actual math here because, you know, it's summer.

If it DOES end up taking a lot of grinding to get to 1 million, they better make the reward worth it

They still haven't shown or suggested all the meta aspects - like what collecting all 120 (?) special coins unlocks, or what the million coin goal is really for, if anything.

For instance, will this one have a 'world 9'? What if a million coins is required to unlock that?

God forbid
what if it has a full set of special worlds, ala Mario 3D Land.

Ah well. In spite of the negativity surrounding it, there were still new level themes in these new videos. Quality platforming is quality platforming; it's kind of amusing that people don't complain about 2D Mega Man games being iterations.

Comparing this to the original DS NSMB, this seems more like a Japanese Mario 2 situation.

This looks mostly uninspired. Some parts look cool, like that "Night" level. But every single song is from NSMBWii. And that doesn't fly with me, Tanooki suit or not.

+new style to some levels (rainbow, night level)
+levels scale vertically AND horizontally (not one or the other like previous NSMB)
+coin collecting makes it an entirely new approach
+2-player co-op

I must say, I'm getting pretty excited about this title. The more I hear and see about NSMB2 and NSMBU, the less I feel like they are rehashed and the more excited I get.

Assuming you get 200 coins per level, which seems like a fair amount, you'd have to play 5000 levels to reach a million.

Looks like a load of fun to me. It's got an interesting gimmick. Would've loved it to be a Wario Land game instead, but I'll take 2D Mario any damn time of the week.

Oh wow, the end of that second trailer has some incredible-looking level design. :O

The four minutes one has even a sort of expansion of one of the things doable in NSMBWii, represented in a famous Trick Video from Nintendo itself: flying with Bullet Bills while being Mini Mario. But they seem to have pretty extended it O_O It's at 4:11

It seems, well at least from the trailers, you can get up to 1,000-3,000 coins per level.

So assuming the average is 2,000, then you'll only need to play 500 levels. Considering there's going to be about 100 levels in the game, it's basically playing each level 5 times.

Everyone needs to watch this video.

I agree. That video is the best one so far.

"Level too difficult? Collect this item and breeze through it!"

"We also shower you with coins, coins and more coins! Have a million lives in minutes and never go coinless ever again!"

In the four minutes video, you can see there are even more than 800 coins per level.

I think I'm the only one that actually likes this new coin collecting aspect. Maybe they've gone too far, but the coins before were definitely far too sparse.

It's just part of the story. You have to collect 1 million coins so, now you have an excuse to follow the coins around a level no matter what kind of crazy platforming you have to do. 1 million coins might not sound like a lot, but it is. Someone did some quick math based on how many coins they got in the E3 demo and said it would take over 50 hours of play time to get to 1 million at that rate. So, you're really going to want to get every coin you see, any way you can, so you can beat the game.

What happens when you get 1 million coins? Does it unlock the last level or something?

I think it's one of the more interesting things they've done with the Mario formula in a while. If you're into it, the dynamic of the game can completely change.

I think this game looks pretty fun myself, visual similarity to previous NSMB games be damned, at least i'm finally getting my main desire, backgrounds that don't suck so much, granted NSMBU still obliterates this game on the background front but oh well.
Coin collecting is more interesting the more I see of it, they've gone to interesting lengths to make it varied.

Notice that one of the very few music changes seems to be even more "bah" like voice effects throughout the entire NSMB overworld theme going with the main melody, gives me those Yoshi's Story vibes. Still wish they could at least change the music though (once again NSMBU wins out).

They're not going to tell us. However, I hope it's something really awesome. Maybe something like changing all the levels to "classic" graphics, for instance, or like Mario World does when you beat the Special World and changes many of the enemies. Or maybe like Mario 1 does and make all of the enemies harder.
