3DS XL First Impressions/Previews

Hmm... alright. Very nice... now I just need a White one to show up on eBay and I'll have myself a white 3DS XL. Or maybe even transparent! :o

To anyone who has done anything like this before, is it difficult to do?

It's not difficult at all but you need to be very careful with the hinges as they are easy to screw up and break the connector between the upper and lower part of the DS.

Oh and you'll probably need a special triwing-screwdriver but you can get those for 2 bucks on ebay.

I'm usually extremely careful when it comes to things like that, and screwdrivers wouldn't be an issue, so it sounds like I should be good. :)

Hope the shells come soon after launch... I'd buy the blue with intentions of making it white if the wait for a shell won't be so bad

I've never done a DS but I have done a GBA SP replacement shell.

I figured if she could do it, so could I.

As I was doing it I took apart one of the shoulder buttons...just cause I was curious... and that was somewhat difficult to get the spring in the shoulder button to line up just right again. So don't mess with the shoulder buttons more then you have to.

Feeding the thin cable from the LCD through the hinge was somewhat tricky, I was so worried I was going to tear or rip it. And according to "Iwata Asks" the 3DS XL has 3 of those.

Also putting the hinge caps back on required such force that I was worried I'd break my SP.

It wasn't too hard, but personally I'd still be reluctant to do it on something that costs $200.

I figure if I ever want to change my blue color I'll just go online and make one of those custom removable 3M skins that can be put on the outside of it. If I wanted to, instead of a design or picture, I could even make an all black skin that would hopefully match well with the black interior.
 
Having to deal with 3 of those strips might be an issue, yeah... and apparently the cameras have to be aligned a certain way too

I'm a bit reluctant but if there is a guide, I'll do it. Apparently, the top and bottom color shells can be unintentionally clipped off and on. Wonder if it makes it any easier...

Stupid question but the YouTube video shows the original DS mode with black bars. So there isnt a full screen mode even if stretched out a bit?

Game Boy Micro! Well the faceplates were cheap but nearly everything else about it is pretty much the best they've made.
 
... I'm conflicted. I want Kingdom Hearts 3DS, but I'm not sure if I really want a 3DS. Also, if I were to buy a 3DS, it would be better for me to wait for the XL version (release date : 28th July in Europe). However, the 3DS is zoned (I'm European). So I would be better off buying a US one, so I wouldn't have to wait for EU releases, which tend to happen several weeks/months after the US ones... But then, I would be forced to import every game and play them in english (which isn't, in fact, a problem at all :3 ).

... Meeeh, I want Professor Layton vs Phoenix and Fire Emblem... I wouldn't hesitate any longer if those two were available.

Also, I was wondering : what about the "e-market" (DL, DLC (yew), demos, etc) ? Am I going to be able to use the US one, the EU one, both or neither ? It's something quite important actually, can anyone help me out about this ?

Kingdom Hearts and the XL will both be released in Europe before the US. Fire Emblem EU was announced months before the NA localization. And if you look at NOA's recent track record you're better off hoping for localized games in the EU, see Xenoblade, The Last Story. NOE seems to be more open to localizations than NOA. I'd say get the PAL one.

I have the Nyko Power Grip, I think it's a fantastic solution for cramping and battery life. It easily snaps on to the bottom of the 3DS; while also being light weight and adding an extra 4-5 hours of 3DS playtime. It's like having N additional battery + the 3DS' battery life, too. When the Grip needs a recharge, you're still left with a full battery on 3DS.

When I traded in my Aqua unit, toward purple (moved over ambassador content, too) - GameStop's value was $60. They might have a deal closrer to the XL release, where you'd get more value/$ (they have a double value for systems right now until tomorrow).

The current 3DS is as complete or incomplete as you choose to believe. I find the hardware to be complete enough to upgrade, just in regard to color. I'm not parting with my purple unit for XL, I'm getting an XL in addition. There are benefits to the XL, but there are a couple of cons, too. No system is without flaws, but the current 3DS offers a lot of greatness.

I also have the power grip and I can vouch, that thing's a godsend. Prior to owning it I'd drain the systems battery with pretty much every gaming session. As it is now I rarely go through the power grip's charge, let alone dig into the systems battery power.

Also much better ergonomically, as you mentioned. The little grooves underneath to hook your fingers into are great and it rounds out the edges more so they're not jutting into your palms. Good stuff.

They're actually coming out with a new version that's a grip, battery extender, and circle pad pro all in one and it looks really nice.

Great, great review. I am very excited for 8/19, here in the US. It feels like I'm anticipating the system with the pre-launch excitement, that a new system receives. The immersion level with a larger (3D) screen and a refined system have me froth gin anticipation. Great job on this piece! Was a good read for sure :)
 
Didn't most PSP games suffer from aliasing? Shouldn't be an issue. I think its annoying, but it should be way better than say playing a PS2 game on a 32" HDTV.

Well, if you want to put the effort in, you could buy one of these and put it on another DSi XL. Not optimal, but it's the only way to get an NA green at this point.

I'm hoping a White one comes along for the 3DS XL. Maybe a Green one will come too?

I broke my DSlite trying to replace the case. Never again :((((

I wish 3DS XL looked a bit more like a DSi XL, with a sort of concave top edge. The design doesn't look like it shuts nicely.

A DS game stretched on the 3DS would look like an original gameboy or gameboy color game stretched on the GBA which you can actually do and it looks pretty awful.

It probably wouldn't look that bad to me. I don't really notice stuff like that.
 
Did anyone else catch this? The WiFi indicator light on the XL looks almost like the power light on the GBA SP. Not make a big deal, just something I noticed when I saw the first pictures of the XL last month.

So what are the chances that we see white in NA before Christmas? I've decided on just waiting, but I'm getting one by Black Friday.

A special edition is inevitable going by the last 3 years of my memory:

2009: Metallic Blue DSi bundle
2010: Orange/Green DSi's, Mario Red DSi XL
2011: Zelda 25th 3DS, Mario 3DS, Nintendogs Pink 3DS

and I'm probably forgetting a few

Possibly just an already released color with a game. But wait, this was the 25th year anniversary of Metal Gear. Green 3DS XL with Metal Gear Solid 3D Snake Eater for holiday 2012?

I'd buy it! :p

I think a new color is likely though. Metallic Blue, Orange, and Green DSi's were made for BF, the Mario DSi XL was released during the time-frame, as was the Zelda 3DS.

I'll be so pissed if 3DS gets new colors and 3DS XL gets zilch. I expect it, too :(
 
Had a go of one yesterday with KH:3D.

The screen is nice and everything but I was a little underwhelmed as the quality of the hardware in my opinion is a little lacking. It just didn't feel right.
I'm not a fan of XL handhelds anyway so maybe this is tainting me but I think I'll stick with my original 3DS.
 
I lent my 3ds to a good workmate that had to spent some time in the hospital I dont think Ill get it back by the time I receive my XL. If I play a new game, will the save files remain in the XL after the transfer?

man, a MGS one would kill me, cause i love 3 but cant see getting it on 3DS after that demo.

It is compatible with the 3DS stand. Several people with 3DS XL's confirmed it. More importantly - Why would you think the stand would not be compatible. It's just a stand. My DSi XL or any other handheld would work fine with it.

Don't sell it yet! You'll want to system transfer your account so you don't have to start fresh!

Best to sell your 3DS after transferring it to the XL. :)
