Is it really possible to steal ambassador status from demo units?

Should be:

Some units I've seen do indeed have total access to the home menu and everything.

Check the Activity Log and check when downloaded apps like Pokedex 3D, Nintendo Video, Excitebike (if there), etc were first played, chances are, if the date is prior to the price drop, the 3DS is an Ambassador 3DS.

The Ambassador games are downloaded via the "Downloaded Games" section of the eShop, and the status is carried over when transferring, and eShop accounts do merge.

Thus, you should be able to download the games on the XL, even after then transferring your main 3DS account, BUT make sure you do the Ambassador transfer first; the last transfer is the system account that stays.

Should check if going online is parent locked on the system. It is at my best buy and gamestop.

Oh my god 1:1 mode on the XL means I definitely need one. No more choosing between stretched nonsense or small screens. And if GBA VC ever comes it will be perfect.

Shouldn't matter since as long as the 3DS was connected once prior to the price drop, it should be an Ambassador.

Only if online is necessary for the transfer (why should it be?) then there'd be a problem, but I doubt it.

Yup... GBA 1:1 mode is near equal to the size of a GBA SP screen, and full mode must be HUGE.

I hope GBA VC comes really soon

It has to check some certifications or something like that, can't remember what it is, but an Internet connection is needed at the beginning of the transfer.

all this talk about Ambassador status really makes me sad I returned my unit that would have qualified for ambassador status. I really wish we could all get some gba games on the eshop

They will be up eventually. Nintendo likes money too much.

I expect the prices will be astronomical, though.

My go to plan for transferring:

- Buy XL.
- Go to a Best Buy where there's an Ambassador 3DS on display.
- System Transfer to the XL.
- Wait a week due to transfer limit.
- Transfer account from my own original 3DS to the XL.
- Sell original 3DS.
- Both eShop accounts do indeed merge (confirmed via Nintendo's website)
- Have Ambassador games on XL with my original 3DS account transferred over.
- Profit.

I'm a fucking genius, but it's all of the matter of luck of the draw.

How long will the system transfer take at the store? What if a kid comes by and wants to play the system?

Falcon Punch?

But seriously: depends on connection and shit that needs to be transferred. Rangeing from 15 min. to almost one hour i've heard it all.
my dsi to 3ds transfer took about 20 min.

my plan:

buy 3ds a day early
hold on to both systems
done.

I want one badly, but Amazon won't put up a pre-order page. I may wait post-launch to get one tax-free if possible.
If you want one tax free and are willing to go elsewhere than Amazon, I believe NewEgg has them up and I think all orders from there are tax free.

I thought about that. I'm trying for Amazon too because with the credit card, I'll get 3% back or about $6 or so. That will help buy a free game on a later date over time.

I may very well consider that though, thanks!

No problem! :)

So anyways, the charging dock will be sold separately from the XL in NA, right? If so, how much should it cost?

It's a great thing and it sucks that it's seperate (I think?)

I definitely will be getting a dock for this thing, and I need to get one for my vita while I'm at it

Also, does the 3ds stop charging after it reaches full battery like the vita?

It's 25 euros here, should be the same amount of dollars in the US.

:'( was away for most of the weekend and didn't get a time to trade in my 3DS at gamestop, hmmmmmmmmmm to ebay it goes.

i am getting more hyped and hyped for the XL B^)

Are used 3DS's refundable at EBGames/GameStop? Might chance that with a used 3DS that has Ambassador if all else fails, then refund it.

You should be ok doing that.. Chances are that most used 3DS systems have already been reset.
Yep. The thing with the "ambassador status" is that, to be part of it; the system needed to be linked before August 12,2011 and by resetting the unit you lost your ambassador status.

So the "genius Best Buy plan" (:p) might not work, since the unit wasn't connected/linked to the eShop (and you need to have both untis online but that's...doable with a hotspot /cellphone) and buying an used unit to Gamestop to get an ambassador unit migth depend on pure luck IF that specific store never did a reset on it.

Good luck, if anything.

Today (22....still 22 in some states :p) is the last day of the Gamestop double trade-value that was mentioend a few days ago. As expected, values were lowered; for example 3DS (regular) was down to $50. But with the offer it went up to $100; and you could use the $100 to preorder an XL (or buy anything else).

The whole "steal the Ambassador status from a Best Buy demo unit" plan won't work. All demos are locked down with Parental Controls, so many features in Settings are inaccessible, including System Transfer. Internet connection shouldn't be a problem at Best Buy since every Best Buy is a Nintendo Zone, but you wouldn't be able to do a System Transfer with the demo anyway so it doesn't matter.

And seriously? You would steal Ambassador status like that? You should have just bought the 3DS earlier if you really wanted those 20 free games. It's not like Nintendo didn't give everyone a chance.

Traded in my 360, HD, and extra controller for $127 at GameStop today. Birthday is one week away. With the trade in money and birthday money the XL will be MINE!

(and here I cackle and wring hands)

Even if it "could" work.. is it really stealing?
Who cares about about that. More power to anyone if a demo unit that will be disposed of eventually could benefit someone that way.

That's how I see it. Its a demo unit, more power to anyone who can get those games off of it. It'll be disposed or end up broken either way, may as well grab it.

It's not that you're stealing from anyone, but you're taking something that you don't deserve. And it's not like you're paying someone to take their Ambassador status, you're just outright taking it for free.

No, it's not hurting anyone, but it kinda makes you look like a dick, taking something that's supposed to be exclusive to early adopters. You could have just bought a 3DS early like everyone else.

But all demos are locked down anyways, so it's not something that's even possible.

For all you MonHun fans out there:

Monster Hunter 3G on XL

I hope MH4 comes over... never played a MH game and I prefer portability

Also...
Mario Tennis Open
Rhyhtm Thief
Kid Icarus Uprising (movie)

Damn you NoA... freaking August 19 :'(

Also, here's a nice huge image of Red 3DS XL:

And I believe this is the largest/highest res picture of the White for now:

Nice videos. I like they he didn't zoom into the screen. Defeats the purpose of showing off how big the screens are. My DS touch-based games are going to be a lot more fun on this thing. Hoping to see a lot of European impressions next week.

Are you sure they're locked down, as you say? IIRC there was a button combo, at least on the early demo units, that allowed you to boot into the menu. I didn't try to modify any settings, though, so I'm not sure if they were blocked off.

I meant locked down by Parental Controls. Yeah, there's a timed button combo that lets you exit demo mode to the HOME Menu (except in the new Mario Tennis Open demos, it seems), but that's not going to do you any good because System Transfer is disabled via Parental Controls.

Yeah, I'd like to see you try.

1. System transfer REQUIRES a WiFi internet connection for it to even start.
2. It takes anywhere up to 50 minutes to an hour depending on how much stuff you have, with 20 minutes as a bare minimum.
3. Parental controls are in place and locked on a demo unit - you won't be able to get into the transfer menu anyway.

A repost from the 3DS games thread... One of the most well made and convincing pieces of fanart for a Majoras Mask 3D game and system. I have no idea who made it though...

THIS ISN'T REAL

It's convincing me to wait for something like it, because I know something like this will come and I will kill myself in regret :p

Number 1 wouldn't be a problem if it were possible to access System Transfer because all Best Buys should have a Nintendo Zone, so both 3DSes would automatically be connected to the Internet.

That and most smartphones these days can become their own wifi hotspot. It's really just a matter of time and whether someone comes up to play it.

...And the fact that the System Transfer feature is disabled.

Yes, that too :p

So, anyone have any guesses on what the special edition handheld will be this year for Christmas, since they always show up? I'm thinking a Red XL + NSMB2 or a Green XL/OG + LM2. I hope for a White XL + whatever though :/

I feel theres a vital flaw you are missing here, for a 3DS to be of Ambassador Status. It has to be more than just a pre-price drop model

1) Gaining Ambassador status actually hinged on connecting to e-shop before the day of the price-drop, as well as your 3DS being a pre-price-drop model.

2) The ambassador status is tied to your Club Nintendo account as well as the system you were using, the transfer hands over the system rights to the software and your account + it's history but I don't believe it would merge 2 different accounts. (unless someone corrects me, I know it will merge the same e-shop account)

3) Even assuming you got it to work by some amazing happenstance, you would need to know the details of the account, or forever forgo Club Nintendo coins on downloadables. But again, odds of a demo 3DS having any personal online account are super slim

It's a cute idea, but I think you just have to accept the ambassador ship long has since sailed into the sunset.

oh my god, that MM case mockup is nice.

when will best buy do a prepay for local store pickup? waiting on that, cause i get 5% if i buy it from discover portal, but i wanna pick it up locally.

I expect 8€ for most games, 10€ for the games they know everybody wants.

I'd be willing to pay that, but they need an acount system so I can transfer my games to a new system later. Would be nice if they threw the DS library up as well, while they're at it.
