Lol. I don't know why you think that.

Look at the last Iwata asks. They are new rectanglular speakers, unique to the XL. Look at the transparent XL in the article to see them. They were a risk taken to keep the form factor they wanted for the console, and it hasn't paid off.

That is terrible! An entire line of dead pixels. Truly understand that you're pissed. Hopefully that doesn't happen to mine when it arrives :/

The speaker stuff is disappointing. Really like the 3DS speaker, so this is very disappointing news.
 
If more reports come out of screen problems and pixels like that, I may have to cancel my pre-order and hold out a little while longer til they get it fixed.
 
Almost forgot to ask... does anyone have any pics of Rayman Origins on the XL?

I imagine the game would become much more playable and look much nicer on the giant screen

From the Iwata Asks, they had to change the form factor of the speakers to fit in the casing, so they couldn't use the 3DS ones. They said they tried some different methods to improve it, but it still wasn't quite as good as the 3DS ones.

If it's anything like my experience it won't be a repair. They'll ask you if you want to give them a credit card number to guarantee an exchange (that's the 3 day option where they send you a new 3DS and you send the broken one back in the box) or if you don't want to give them a CC you can send yours back and they'll send you a new one when they receive it.

I was really happy with Nintendo USA customer service but my experience with them was back in 2005 so things may have changed.

yeah they are smaller/thinner then a regular 3DS speaker, I guess earphones are a must if possible, or this thing.

Every time I saw someone comment about sending in for a repair to Nintendo they have posted back they have gotten it back within the range specified (US at least).

I know you are fuming about that line, but don't cut out the rest of the picture, I want to see that whole screenshot :P

The speakers are the issue. The low end is pumped up enough that the unit vibrates at times (most evident on Mario Kart), yet the mid range is absolutely shot. Horrible high end too, and to top it all off, its quieter than the original 3ds on full volume.


Anyway as a positive, I took my XL to the park today. Works much better in sunlight than the original.

Considering? Send it to them, without question! The general concensus is that Nintendo's customer service is one of the best in electronics... even if there is some posters here o GAF that experienced streetpass data loss after sending a 3DS to them.

Sure hope the NA production line is better, its all coming from the same place I guess, so who knows. I hope I don't get dead pixels or scratched screens. :(

This is my least favorite part of buying new electronics. Will I get a good screen? Will all the buttons work? Dead pixels? Screen too warm?

What makes it worse with Nintendo's 3DS/XL is that if you don't catch one of the issues before doing a transfer, you've just wasted one of the transfers that they allow, and if your goal is to return it to a store you have to hope that they're nice enough to let you transfer all your stuff to the replacement XL.

wouldn't it be easier to just return it to the store and get a new one since you just bought it?

Yeah, I'm getting it online too.. would be an extra pain in the ass if I have to ship it back and get a new one.

Enough with the defense-force shit on this situation. It's NOT the user's fault that their 3DS screens are constantly being smudged or scratched by the lower screen. It's a design/build error. I put my 3DS in my pocket gently as I have every other handheld I've owned, and the top screen constantly has an impression of the lower portion on it where it rubbed. That's not my fault.

Not if he already did a system transfer. You can only transfer data every seven days so he'd have to wait a week regardless. And like he said, he'd have to transfer back to his original 3DS then wait a week and transfer back to his new XL, thus wasting two of the five available transfers and two weeks. Or he could send it to Nintendo, get it fixed, have it back in a little over a week and not waste two transfers.

On a graph of acoustic characteristics, they aren't exactly identical to the Nintendo 3DS speakers. The speaker size is smaller than that of the ones on the 3DS so sonically it had a disadvantage. But by fine-tuning the structure and capabilities of the speakers itself, and then optimizing the sound with the software, we tried to have them sound like the ones on the 3DS as closely as possible.

Have any news sites done a story on the problems yet? Asked Nintendo for a comment?

Second, for the speakers, how bad is bad? Will I be thinking "oh, I notice the quality is worse" or "this sounds horrible, where are my headphones?"

Yes, but I don't want to lose my system data or paid for games and downloads.

I think I have a new plan, anyway. I'm going to confirm HMV will actually give me a full refund for a faulty system (the website says they will, but I want to ask my local store myself), and if they will, I'm going to wait a week and buy a new 3DS XL, transfer the data between the two, then return my faulty console. It'll still be within the 21 day return period and the 7 day limit for transfers will have expired meaning I can get my data across to the new system.

I need to find a game to play this week that makes this line of defunct pixels as inoffensive and discreet as possible. Clearly MGS3D isn't it.

I don't have any scratches on my 3DS, but the lower screen will leave marks on the top screen as soon as I close the lid.

Careful of what? The only way to guarantee that you didn't get a 3DS with scratched/smudged screens was to never buy a 3DS.

I was staunchly blue for a month, and now I'm on Team Red. They do look nice.
 
My plan is to wait about a week after buying one before transferring to see how it is and if any problems arise.

Normally when I get dead pixels, they're like right away. The "scratches" aren't scratches, they can be rubbed off with a good cloth, better with a teeny drip of water.

As for the warm screens, I've decided I'm going to prefer those, but I'd like to know how I can test to see if they're optimized on both screens so one's not dominant and not too warm-colored.

Yeah it is there fault if they press so hard it makes the line. Ive treated my system with respect, and I havent had any issues. Nor has anyone in any of the gamestops I frequent or events. Really the only place I hear about it is forums

This thing really does give some games a new lease of life. Star Fox in particular looks really good. Barely touched the game since I bought it yet I've just played it for 4 hours straight.

Welp. There you go. I will not get the 3DS XL. Speakers are too important to me. I just don't like using headphones with game.

So its between a Vita and a U for me.

Anywayz: What is with Nintendo's build quality lately? The 3DS had the screen mushing issue (which thankfully hasn't affected me aside from smudges that I wipe off.) horrible start/select/home buttons. And the XL seems to have the mushing and bad speakers. Not to mention it really does look cheap. I thought it was because I just didn't want another black hamdheld but even the white looks kinda cheap...

Where is my awesome Gameboy Pocket/GBA/GBASP/Micro/DS/DSi/DSiXL build quality Nintendo? I hope the Wii U doesn't have any stupid problems.

I...I don't think Nintendo cares about hardware anymore.

It's not anger at all. I'm just shocked at your cluelessness. Your point is that anyone whose screens are scratched/smudged are the direct result of their own inability to care for their device. That's dumb. I'd wager that the people here, like myself, that experienced the problem never sat on, pressed on etc etc the 3DS. It's shitty design. The issue was so bad that Amazon stopped carrying it. Attempts to minimize it by saying you never experienced the issue doesn't change the fact that many people did. Enough so that a major retailer had to pull it. It's like saying the DS Lites didn't have a design flaw in the hinges because mine never fell apart in my hands as it did for thousands of other people.

I returned my 3DS to customer service and the person I spoke on the phone said that every 3DS with vertical scratches on the screens will be replaced. I'm very carefull regarding my consoles, and I never ever pressed on the console or wasn't being carefull,but mine got scratched too. It's a design flaw, simple as that.

I got a brand new 3DS ( installed a screenprotector for both screens ) and now the upper screen ( well at least the protectors ) are scratched again. When I did not install the screenprotectors, the upper screen would have been scratched again.

Its the truth though. Lets say it is a design flaw and you know it could happen. Be more careful is all I am saying.

Amazon stopped carrying it but dozens of retailers on amazon still did and amazon is carrying the xl I believe. So That really isnt a gigantic deal.

You see the hinge actually did happen to me after about 5 years of constant use.

Uh, you know Amazon doesn't personally sell and stock any Nintendo systems right? The only things on there are from 3rd party retailers that sell through them.

The OG 3DS did have an inherent design flaw with the lower screen bezel. However, I think the XL totally fine, the top screen does not make contact with the bezel.
