what happened to good music? no seriously

The radio is mostly awful these days. Once Clear Channel bought everything and homogenized the formats, now it's just the same old thing day in and day out. It's getting harder to find music at all on the radio in my area these days. So many stations have switched to the Sports talk format. Thankfully there's plenty of resources online.

I'd take the current music scene over any point in the past easily. So much selection that practically every genre has dozens of bands/artists... if you like music at all you can find some current band you enjoy.

why do people still listen to the radio

Pretty much. Only reason I ever turn on the radio is in the car for weather reports/sports scores.

why do people still listen to the radio

Some of us spend a lot of time in our cars and don't want to pay for a satellite subscription, use our limited cell phone data, or have time to spend hours combing through iTunes looking for stuff to download to a mp3 player and hook up in the car.

I personally do the third option, but I've also got friends in their late 30s who are busier than I am and the number 1 complaint is that they don't have time to sift through a bunch of mostly garbage to get to the good stuff.

I swear, the 12ish bucks I pay for Sirius is one of the most worthwhile recurring purchases I make. I love this service.

I'd hazard it to say that paying for Sirius is more worthwhile than paying for DirecTV.

Lots of good music out there .. you just have to find it.

(38 years old here)

1. Get satellite radio

or

2. Keep Pandora/Grooveshark/TheSixtyOne on in the background while you surf the net.

or

3. Stream some internet radio from a genre you like.

Or do all three, like I do.

Here's a new song I just found the other day .. I love it: Bess Rogers - "Anchor"

Maybe I'm just looking at things too simplistically, but there's only two types of music, mainstream and non-mainstream aka indie. It doesn't matter if you classify indie as the folky styles of Neutral Milk Hotel or the punk styles of Crass, it's still indie.

I really despise Katy Perry. She looks like the most manufactured thing on the planet, and she seems like a complete drama queen despite sounding like every other pop diva. I don't have a problem with any other musicians.

Pandora tries to come across as smart, but I don't find it much more helpful than last.fm.

Spotify is better than both of those but nothing amazing. They do play music similar to other bands rather than just 'hey you like Alkaline Trio, you should like Green Day because they were both popular in 2004!'

this reminds me of people complaining that they don't have good games to play.

honestly, if I stopped doing everything else in my life and dedicated every second I have left to reading, listening to music, watching movies and playing games I will still only consume a fraction of all the material out there I'd enjoy. People complaining about a lack of interesting entertainment in the age of the internet blow my mind.

Are there any good websites for discovering new music based on what you already like? The ones I have found are rather shallow.

Try http://songza.com/. ios

I used to complain about music, then everyone started to complain about music and you realize after a hot minute that the music that's actually out there is actually much more interesting than the tastes of people complaining about music.

Oh and, while I don't have anything against them...The Cranberries? Really?

nope

Pandora is weird, I remember having it set to play 80s heavy metal, and it throws a fucking Kanye West song at me. What the hell.

^and I'm not sure what part of my post you're replying to, but okay.

Radio is shit. Otherwise, whenever I see those best albums or what are you listening to threads I go through and try some stuff out, but most of it just doesn't appeal to me or I find really bland. That Beach House album for example, I just couldn't get into it at all.

I still try though. Every once and a while I'll find something I like. But I find I listen less and less to music these days.

EDIT: ^^ Yeah, Songza is great for trying new stuff.

This and I check out Pitchfork's latest reviews(Don't listen to them based on the score, but it just gives me an idea of what's new.) Spotify and Youtube make it easier than ever to find new music. I really do love Spotify because of finding playlists to find new bands and being able to stream what my friends are streaming.

Should have checked the "why we chose this" box. Probably contained a sample from a song or had similar lyrical themes. Pandora doesn't always choose things based on sounding alike.

There's so much good music out there. I feel like I don't have enough time in the day to get through it all and appreciate it to a satisfactory level. I had something like 90 new albums from last year alone that I listened to. I'm near 50 for this year. I could have so much more if I had more time. I know there's a ton of music out there from this year that I'd love, but I haven't listened to yet.

The good music probably isn't on the radio, though. I wouldn't know much about that, though, since I haven't heard a radio in like 4-5 years.

For those of us that grew up on 80s and 90s radio, you will understand this ...

I read an article recently and I don't remember the author or where the site was at, but he hit the nail on the head.

Yes, in previous decades there was a lot of shit on top 40 radio, just like today. But the difference is, you had a LOT of variety on pop radio back in the day. You had shit. And then you also had good stuff.

Like I mentioned earlier, you could have a lineup of Nirvana, Whitney Houston, Stone Temple Pilots, Michael Jackson, Pearl Jam, then hear a Wilson-Phillips Song, Celine Dion, and then hear a Smashing Pumpkins song then a Michael Bolton song followed by Green Day. There was a little something there for everyone.

Not so today. Every goddamn song on top 40 and pop radio sounds the same. If it doesn't have a heavy beat that can be danced to in a club, and if the song doesn't feature a current rapper talking shit over the bridge of the song, then it doesn't get played on top 40 radio. (or unless you are Adele). They've killed any and all variety that top 40 used to have.

An example would be a song that I kind of found a little catchy - the Maroon 5 song Payphone. I was listening to it on the radio and kind of feeling the groove a little and then bam - here comes Whiz Khalifa rapping somewhere in the middle of all this and killing my groove. What's the fuckin point of that? It killed the song. I don't personally have anything against rap music or Whiz Khalifa, but why the fuck do all top 40 songs resort to this tactic? It seems old and played out and this is coming from an old and played out 70s, 80s, and 90s rocker.

More artists on a track = more potential listeners = more $

I definitely agree that the variety is gone in terms of music on top-40 radio. The majority of it is overproduced electro-pop.

Even a good portion of today's radio "R&B" and some of today's radio "hip-hop" (e.g.: Flo Rida) is basically electro-pop. The songs are just classified as being R&B/hip-hop since the artist is Black. It's all about image.

Nothing changed, you just have more choices than ever before and sorting gets harder as tastes become more specific and curators can't keep up or be honest.

Top 40 = similar flavors of Kraft singles. Yes they sell more cheese than anyone else in the word and according to popgaf that is important.

In order to find cheese with real taste you'll have to look elsewhere. Find someone with a great voice and personality, follow it up with a song that has multiple layers of meaning to you personally and finish it off with good production value.

And don't worry about what other people (popgaf) think.

What kind of idiotic post? I came in here and posted a pic of SAMS TOWN album by The Killers.

Stop talkin crap. You know nothing. The fuck outta here with that. Pop Gaf arent all fans of Top40 so again you are pulling crap out of nowhere. Sit down
