3DS XL First Impressions/Previews

Can someone recommend a reliable and reasonably priced online outlet for an XL pre-order? I imported a US 3DS at launch with no trouble from Amazon, but they haven't opened pre-orders for the XL yet. I had a quick look at other online retailers but the prices being asked for are ridiculous.

Edit: I should probably mention that I'm looking for shipping to Australia as I know not every retailer offers this.

I'm such a piece of shit

I've decided that I'm just going to buy a red XL day 1 and buy a White/special edition one whenever it comes out as well. 2/5 transfers used.

Fuck me

B-but by then you'll be in love with your red one, are you just going to toss him/her to the curb!? What about the hours you'll have spent together, the moments and memories? Will all that mean nothing to you when the white model flashes its pretty shell?

Red fo' life. Or at least until a new revision.
=)

Question: I don't have wifi. How gimped will the 3DS experience be? Felt like I was missing out on a lot with PSP..

I want one of these, but maybe I should invest in wifi before getting one..

I play a little online. Mario Kart, Kid Icarus, RE. But honestly (for me anyway) 98% of my 3DS gaming is offline.

Well. Then there's swap note and randomly surfing the eshop, but I would definitely still recommend the 3DS to an offline person. For sheezy. Some great gaming to be had - a killer backlog of DS titles, and an ever growing collection of new hotness. Good stuff.

I have a sister or a brother to give it to

I'll be just peachy ;)

Yeahhh...

All of the hours with Aqua meant little, once Purple arrived ^ _ ^

I've had enough all pink! I want to go back to the glory days of the pink+white DS Phat. And, at this point, I think if Nintendo of Japan does it, America will get it too. As useless as NOA can often be, they've gotten to actually be very good about color choices.

Oh, hey, I like the pink+white DS Phat, too! And I'd welcome a similarly painted 3DS XL, too. I'm just saying I'd also welcome an all-pink model.

As for NA getting one if Japan does: I'd agree, but there's the little issue of Japan getting the all-white XL and NA getting shafted (at least at launch). :(

What's this yellow screen thing people are talking about?
The new screens have warmer LCDs, they are not yellow unless you have a completely white backdrop and turned on power saving though. I actually prefer the new, warmer screens to the old ones, colours are a lot more vibrant now.

Finally got round to getting a 3DS XL yesterday - while I find it far more comfortable to use, it certainly shows up huge levels of crosstalk over most of the 3DS games. The smaller screen seems to hide it better, but the large screen just blows it up so much that it can become distracting.

I've been playing some Theatrhythm so here are a few more early impressions:

- The menus are quite pixelated, but that was to be expected. The ingame graphics are a bit jaggy but it doesn't really bother me that much. The CGI clips that play in the background of some scenes look fantastic, though.
- The upper screens brightness is definitely more yellow than my 3DS before this one. But I'm guessing that in some sense this is for the better, especially when playing at night: less bright = less eyestrain. I'll try to get used to it. Is anyone familiar with the program f.lux? It makes your desktop less bright when nighttime approaches. My 3DS XL screen looks a lot like it.
- The 3D is REALLY impressive. I'm not sure about the viewing angle being any different, but when you find that sweet spot it's just... wow. And Theatrhythm isn't even that 3D-heavy, so I'm really looking forward to some KH3D time later today. I used to get headached from my old 3DS so I always played with the 3D off. I hope that the 'warmer' upper screen and the better(?) 3D will make it a little easier on the eyes for me.
- The touchscreen feels less responsive, but that may be just because of the newness I dunno.
- It really is a joy to hold. I can't believe how light it is!

Hi everybody, I had a question about the SD cards that can be used with the 3DS (and the XL).

Does the 3DS care about how much space the SD card can use? Does the card have to be a specific Class? Or does it require a minimum class?

I was thinking of picking up a 32gb SanDisk SDHC Class 10 to use with it. That should work, right?

(Sorry if this is a dumb ass question)

Mine came with a class 4 Lexar SD card, not sure if it takes much advantage of higher classes. It only seems to make a 'Nintendo 3ds' folder on the memory card, so you could even use it to store other things too (also creates a DCIM folder if you take photos)

Played some Revelations last night and had a look at OoT both of which are gorgeous. Then I noticed
a dead pixel on the top screen, just off centre :(

Also, the headphone socket is a bit temperamental - requires a bit of fiddling with the headphone jack before sound come through properly.

Will be taking a trip back to Blockbuster today to get it exchanged. Other than that, very impressed indeed with it. Love the AR stuff with the cards, too ^_^

So, you just don't have internet at home? or have internet but just not WiFi?
If you are using a laptop, there are ways (free programs) to turn it into a hotspot. A friend of mine does that and plays online with the 3ds.

I just tried this. Seems PS3 and PSP can't detect it. Some people seem to have problems getting 3DS to work with it too. Looks like a hassle, might as well 'upgrade' to wifi to not have to fly through hoops when I do get one.

I'm not sure where you live, but at least in the U.S., you can always take a quick trip to your local Starbucks or McDonalds and use the wifi there -- 3DSes connect automatically to their wifi networks. You won't get amazing speeds, mind you, but it''ll be more than enough to download whatever eShop games tickle your fancy (playing games online, probably not so much). It's a decent solution until you get your own wifi, anyway.

Either way, though, I'd recommend the 3DS to someone with no wifi. There are plenty of awesome retail 3DS games that you don't need wifi to enjoy (Ocarina of Time 3D, Star Fox 64 3D, Resident Evil Revelations, Kid Icarus: Uprising, Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance, Theatrhythm Final Fantasy, Ridge Racer 3D, Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7, and soon New Super Mario Bros. 2, among other games).

So GAF, I'm thinking of selling my DSi XL in order to upgrade to a 3DS XL, but I have a couple of questions first:

1) How big is the screen in comparison to a DSi XL when playing original DS games? Does it upscale as well as the DSi XL?

2) I have a Mario 25th Anniversary DSi XL. I don't have any real personal attachment to it, but it's in near-mint condition. Is there any chance I'd later regret selling it for ~$100? Is there any chance it'll be worth anything in the long run?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Keep it, if the visual integrity of your DS games matters to you. It's been fairly well established by current 3DS XL owners that, while DS games look quite a bit better in 1:1 mode on the 3DS XL than they do on the 3DS, they still look the best on the DSi XL by a wide margin.

As for what your Mario 25th Anniversary DSi XL will be worth in the long run, I have no idea. But it seems reasonable to assume that a limited edition DSi XL that, if kept in mint condition, will be worth more down the road than it is now.

I'm tempted to get a 3DS XL when I get a bit of money.

How big is it in comparison to the original DS? Anyone have any pictures comparing the 2?

Nice! Can you post another picture showing off the red/burgundy case? Do you think it's a good case for a red 3ds xl or is the colour a bit strange? I've got the black one for my DSi XL but am considering getting a second one.

Sorry for shitty phone pictures, but here's the case in direct sunlight on my windowsill:

Here it is compared to the red DSI XL console (with a brutal fingerprint on the top!):

And here it is compared to my brown leather bag:

And another from the side:

It's pretty red. And excellent.

Thanks! I might try out my black version of the case with the 3DS XL when I get the console. If I like it, I'll either get another black one or the red one so my DSi XL can have the original case again. Decisions.

It's not a purse, it's a wallet..... well, a manly purse.

But seriously, it's the best DSi XL case I've seen so I'm happy to hear the 3DS XL fits it. This is my one:

Have any of you XL users played SSFIV yet? If you have please can report on how the d-pad functions when pulling of special moves etc. Is it improved? I need to know :D

Ooh. Black looks nice. Will report back with more pictures when my blue one arrives.

I can't find one of these for sale online in Canada anywhere :( I'm also super jealous of your yellow XL, best color.

I bought one for my sister, and this is what I can say :
- The matte finish is really, really good. Especially when you're used to the fingerprints-magnet that is the normal 3DS.
- The 3D Slider now has a clic for when you pass from 2D to 3D and vice-versa. A simple yet good idea, I wonder why it hasn't been implanted in the first 3DS.
- The grip is reaaaally comfortable for my mid-sized hands. It's a relief to play MK7 or KIU on it.
- The shoulder buttons do not squeak and do not waggle, they are firm and you can feel it when you press them. They're like the DS Tank's in that regard.
- The circle pad has a new coating that makes it less smooth, it doesn't slip under the thumb.
- The buttons have a different feeling to them (well maybe because it's a brand new system), they're more like the DS Tank, more clickety but not too much.
- No scratches on the screen so far.
- Oh god the screen. You have to really see the system in front of you to believe it. They're HUGE. Especially compared to the size of the console. I don't even know where to put my eyes on.
- The upper screen can now stop on 3 positions : completely flat, a little tilted towards you and at an angle of ~80-90°, like a laptop.
- It's definitely bigger than the vanilla 3DS, but it's still very portable.

Overall a pretty amazing system, I'll buy one as soon as I can.

This is actually a thing! I had to adjust to the bigger screens for this exact reason.

Fuuuuck, OoT looks immense on this. Absolutely gorgeous.

Any recommendations from the e-shop? A friend has recommended Pullblox and Mutant Mudds. Any others that I should take a look at?
