FUCK YOU, NINTENDO. Seriously, if you're thinking of buying an XL, put some stickies on it to keep the screens separate or it could well scratch itself. Absolutely unforgivable for Nintendo to have not fixed this shit.

Welp. Have to add my 360 bumpers to my XL once we have one. Hilarious and sad that they can't get this simple design right.

there's a difference between a defect like those, which likely fall into the normal %, and the screen issue which essentially effects every single 3DS & 3DS XL.

The DSi XL is much better than the DSi tbh. But yes, since then they've become kind of meh at designing hardware. Even the Wii U looks to be worse (way bigger, chunky, curved in weird places and the red sync button on the front, etc). The Gamecube and Wii are so well designed and the Wii U looks like the 3DS in terms of design (took the last generation design but altered the design for the worse and made it less sleek and appealing). What the fuck happened to the people designing the hardware?

EDIT: Stealth20k, for the past week or so you've been damage controlling the screen scratching problem. There is a problem and just because you're a fan of Nintendo doesn't mean you have to ignore faults in hardware. I saw MS fans doing the same around the time of the Xbox 360 launch. If the problem doesn't affect you (because you don't put the 3DS in your pocket for example), then fine. But don't go around implying that it's normal to have problems with hardware or that just because it's a minority of users having problems we shouldn't be acknowledged. That sets a bad precedent.

Also, I doubt it's a "minority" having problems as it affects all 3DS. It's a part of the design (2 asymmetrical screens with the rim of the touch screen hitting the upper screen due to slight pressure). I'd say we aren't seeing a bunch of complaints because people just don't care or not they're not putting it in their pockets because the size of the device or other reasons. It's just an inherent flaw to the design. All 3DS devices could have problems in certain situations. One of which is putting it in pockets, which for a handheld system is laughably bad.

the console of the wii u looks fine,.

If your talking about the controller being bigger, it is

chunky? no it isnt, and the curves, help with the hold.


Everyone whose playtested the wii u has said the controller is really comfortable

I never heard anyone say the original 3ds was comfy

I'll take terrible hinges over a flaw that scratches a screen to a point where it breaks the 3D. Thankfully all my DSi units have had no problems, but every 3DS system is a liability at this point without a homebrew solution.. or sending the system in every six months while under warranty.

I never nor have I known anyone who had screen scratches. Ive had 2 hinge breaks

Just don't deny the serious hardware faults with the 3DS. Because I never had a hinge break, I don't deny the serious flaw of DSi systems. You might have been lucky with your 3DS and scratches, but it doesn't mean it's not a significant issue. You don't even need to experience a scratch to look at a 3DS and realise how terrible the clam shell design is with the lifted border around the touch screen.

Every system has hardware faults. psp umd hinge breaks, ps3 and 360's dying at raipid paces, wii power failures and brickings

Its the nature of the industry we live in

I've had my 3DS since launch and I've ever only had the smudges. The smudges show that the screens are touching so why do some people get scratches instead?

Editors note: I've never crammed my 3DS into the pockets of my skinny jeans.
 
They shouldn't have ditched Nintendonium.

Just for that reason. People carry around the 3DS quite a bit. You're probably going to be better off if you don't take it out much and keep it safe around the house. Original launch unit developed 'scuff' marks on the top screen, and I didn't take any chances with my purple unit; 360 feet went on it straight away.
 
Anyone have any impressions on how Star Fox 64 3D plays on the XL? The small size of the 3DS has made it difficult for me to play the game for long periods of time.

Have the feet helped people who were having issues getting scuffs/scratches? If so then that makes this sound like something Nintendo should have been able to address by now.

I've thought for a while that this was something that Nintendo just didn't put enough thought into preventing since the two different sized screens are unique to the 3DS/XL.

I did see a listing on HMV UK that it was coming out August 24th there, with the plug included. If that's the case, a standalone cradle here at launch wouldn't be out of the question. The fact that we haven't seen anything yet is a bit worrisome. At this point before the Vita's release I had my charging dock preordered.
 
Have been playing around with the silver/black 3DS XL since Monday. Great machine. The battery seems to last a good bit longer (~1 hour?), I have not had any scratch issues with the top screen so far. Is it possible that those that have those lines do close their XL pretty fast/with much pressure?
And is it just me or is the brightness better? I've had my OG 3DS on level 5 (energy saving disabled) for months, but after switching to the XL I quickly switched to level 4 (energy saving disabled).

After there was a blow up about the issue six months after launch, Nintendo started producing units with raised bumpers (those little plastic pieces near the top of the upper screen), to 'solve' the issue. They're easily removable, so you can add some double sided tape under them to achieve the same effect. I didn't find it reliable enough though and used the little feet from my 360.

Similarly, if you sent in your unit, they were supposed to give you the new bumpers. With all this said, it's a shame that some XL units now appear to suffer a similar fate. I guess we'll see if it's some, or the majority soon.

It's a design defect. It can affect ALL 3DSES. Do us all a favor and stop blaming the consumer. It's shitty.

What's the point of making a PORTABLE handheld with a clamshell design if you can't safely put it in your pocket without worrying that simply by doing that you're risking destroying your screens?
 
it wasnt a design defect as much as a design flaw as it doesnt effect every one, or even 75 percent of them I would wager if it did, youd hear way more about it than you do.



I still dont know what they were thinking with the original ds.

The biggest question every time a new color releases or when the XL came out is - "Does it scratch/smudge the upper screen like every other 3DS appears to?"

Ahh more cluelessness from the guy that claims 3DS screen scratches are the result of user error. I just went to the 3DS forum at Gamefaqs and simply searched on 'scratch'. 65+ threads all discussing the scratching problem on 3DS and now 3DS XL. Is your definition of "never talked about" simply different from my own? By burying your head in the sand and pretending there aren't any issues doesn't actually make them go away. Nor does blaming it on users make it stop being an issue.

Thankfully neither my regular 3DS nor my XL had any issues. I've carried my XL in a pouch inside my bag for the last 7 days and so far so good.

Hahaha what? They're locked because they're old. The problem has been so prevalent that 60+ threads were created about the issue. They weren't locked because they were trolls, they're locked because after X amount of days without further input GF locks them. Same with every other thread.

Stretched looks as bad, but 1:1 now is a bit bigger than the DSi, so it's a perfect size. The battery is lasting me about an hour and a half more than it used to, so that's pretty good.
