Believe it or not, gamers who like the Atelier series are NOT pedophiles

You forgot to add the sexual element. Because we're clearly exempting Gantz, Beserk, Crying Freeman and Sanctuary (at least until they get to raping).

Gantz is saturated with fanservice, both of the sexual kind and the violent kind. It's rather squicky. Fanservice is usually sexual, but extreme violence, name drops or other tropes could just as easily count as fanservice... actually in hindsight arguing semantics is rather pointless.

Sexual content doesn't automatically mean fanservice.

Whatever your feelings on the scene itself, the rape scene in Berserk obviously wasn't meant to be fanservice.

Fanservice is when the creator(s) put a scene that serves no purpose to the narrative or theme and exists solely to pander to the audience. This may or may not equal wank material.
What if the narrative or theme panders to the audience :(

No he doesn't.

My name is fancy corndog and I had a fancy corndog avatar! It was a lot more 'artistic' than this pedo anime. I have to turn my damn avatars off to post from work.

Although she is kinda cute. It makes me feel fuzzy inside, like a new feeling. She's in high school right?

To reiterate, the character in your "new avatar" has the mental capacity of a vegetable.

I'm sorry for your loss.

Fan service = little random nods of stuff the fans want every once in a awhile normally nothing to major. Ecchi = The show is COMPLETELY BASED AROUND perverted FAN SERVICE LIKE THE WHOLE GOD DAMN TIME ummm Horizon this season is a good example.

I want to enjoy Horizon for the sheer zany ridiculous backstory and premise.

Then I remember the breasts.

Then I sad.

Then I watch it anyway

Anime for kids. Berserk is anime for adults and is branded as seinen anime.

Okay thanks. If it's "anime for kids" then yeah... I wouldn't describe Berserk as shonen. Quite the opposite really.

It's important to note that shounen and seinen don't necessarily imply a certain type of content. You got Deadman Wonderland with graphic displays of kids being killed, implied rape, and all around disturbing content. It's shounen.

Can't you at least ACT like a good sport if you want him to remove the avatar?

It's fun to watch for how straight up stupid it is. Just turn your brain off when you watch it :P

Hey, what's the name of that anime where a bunch of women run around inheriting each other's breasts? Someone here has to know what I'm talking about. The bigger they are, the more esteemed and wealthy the woman.

Back when I posted a lot in AnimeGAF, I actually spent a lot of time dissecting the show to figure things out.

Yup.

I feel so ashamed for knowing what you're talking about :|
Manyuu Hikenchou

dafuq

Is this elaborate satire or is this real

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manyuu_Hikenchou

In a reign ruled by the Tokugawa shogunate, breasts mean everything. Those who have breasts are guaranteed wealth and popularity. The women who lack them are not considered "human". Members of the ruling Manyu Clan help raise future big breasted women. Written on a secret scroll possessed by the clan, there are said to be various techniques on how to grow big and beautiful breasts. Chifusa is to be successor of the clan. However, she takes the secret scroll and runs away with it, hoping to fight against the cruel world that the Manyu Clan has created.

Yeah, all I want to say is that if, and I can't stress that enough, IF there are games specialized for paedophiles...isn't it better that those people act out their fetish in that virtual world than...well, in real life?

I honestly think that video games are a really great medium to live out some crazy shit which should have no place in real life, like you know...to slice, shoot people and looking under skirts of underage looking gnomes...

Person A watches a funny/cute scene where fanservice occurs and laughs/dawws because of the funny/cute
Person B watches the same scene and the only thing he can see is how sexual everything is

One of them is really creepy

And to reiterate my previous post, butts/underwear are funny, just like a baby running around the house naked, running away from people trying to dress her/him up. Seeing anything sexual in that context is seriously wrong. If the context is sexual then yeah hate away, but if it isn't (and in most animes isn't, at least the ones I've watched) then raging is creepy and ignorant, like seeing all videogames with violent content as murder simulators

edit:typo

I don't really care about other forms of entertainment since I'm not into them. However, in anime the form of fan-service I'm talking about is generally sexualized and put in there for the viewers in enjoyment.

By the way, I'm not one of the people arguing whether or not you're a pedophile.

Put simply, it's there to sell merchandise. People are more likely to purchase cute and/or sexually appealing figurines/art/branded merchandise and thus most anime (really, entertainment media in general) will feature some sort of cute character/creature that will used as a mascot character for the series and will usually have a separate character that represents sex appeal (this character can also just be the main romantic interest and not necessarily meant to be a sex symbol).

It's all for the purpose of marketing. People that aren't into the fanservice of a series aren't likely to purchase anything beyond the DVD's. So, in most cases, the audience that fanservice targets tends to spend significantly more money on the series than those that don't. As such, you get more shows catering to that demographic to one degree or another.

This, again, applies to all entertainment mediums.

Don't worry, your avatar lives on. Momentarily, anyway.

"Fanservice" exist in all mediums from comics, to books, to movies, to music, ect. I don't understand why anime is seen as having more than any other entertainment medium.

Bones season 7 as an example has several episodes of pure fanservice, as an example.

Although there's room to argue that seeing the bones crew act in a movie as a sort of alternate themselves in order to solve a mystery is quite different from panty shots, showers and titty bouncing. Specialy when in many instances the focus of the late tends to be on underage characters.

One could argue that most of this content is targeted at young adults so it's age-proper, but then there's the issue of adults consuming such content and well, this thread is quite long already...

Fanservice doesn't always mean sexual.

MGS is fanservice for military otaku, for example.

ding ding ding.

This is the best reply I've read in a long while because you're completely right.

Those usually happen if (not in an ecchi anime) when it's actually likely to happen in real life. Would you rather their skirt never move and their (in some cases, ridiculous chest) never move and have it look incredibly stupid?

Of course you have shows that take them to the extreme, those are ecchi shows and it's based off of character fanservice for anime/manga otaku (which I am one).

How did I miss this thread? D:

OP is so right, I am not even kidding. People just assume things really. I say try the games first. They are a lot of fun!

You're not a pedophile, but it's probable that you wank it to hentai now and then. Not that there's anything wrong with that, do what you enjoy.

I'm surprised this is still a thread, kind of forgot where I left off. Are things more civil now or is everything still crazy?

If one wanted to play these games where should she start?

This has been answered several times over the course of this thread. But I'm afraid I can't help you there. I forgot the correct one and there are 24 pages here. 24 pages of people calling other people potential child abuser. I can't.

Edit - Atelier Totori ? Yeah it seems to me that the second game in the last trilogy is the one. You avoid the bad first one and can enjoy the third after that.
Me ? If I try the saga one day, I'm too OCD to pass on the first unfortunately.

Talking PS3 games only? Probably with Totori. I started with Rorona and enjoyed that game, but Totori and Meruru are leaps and bounds ahead in terms of technical advances. Like, it doesn't feel like "one game to the next in the series" progression, it feels like console generation leap progression. If you like it, play Meruru next. If you're finding yourself really enjoying things, go back and play Rorona, too. It's not as good but if Totori and Meruru make an Atelier Arland fan out of you, you'll probably enjoy Rorona, too, at least for one playthrough, because at core it's a similar, albeit less polished, game with some fun character shenanigans and light-hearted adventure.

I was reading every post until I went to bed and woke up to hundreds of new replies :(

Right, but everything in a show, specially an animated show where the team behind it can control everything on screen, is a conscious choice. Or to put it another way, the team behind the show decides they want scenes that feature such fanservice.

Do you really think the animators are reading the script, see there's a mountaintop and well, ya know, there's wind atop mountains, so skirts have to move and inevitably as much as we do not want it to happen, in the sake of realism, we will have a pantyshot.

It is intentional.
