The Player 1 Podcast Topic

Your constant tweets were largely responsible for me buying that game, you jerk! If your constant deal posting hadn't saved me so much money already, I'd be demanding some compensation.

I do intend to sit down and give the game a second chance sometime. I was just so bored by the (admittedly early) bits that I did play that I didn't feel any desire to continue. Because, you know, I wasn't being paid to actually review the game.

It would have been wrong if you hadn't.

Looks like Sony's plan to delay the demo by a week worked, lol :(

Maybe a little late, but I wanted to mention my favorite episode, which no one probably remembers.

It was one of those quiet ones when it was just Phil and CJ, and they had gotten all the way to the end, after talking about Prince of Persia or something boring like that, and they somehow got launched into the longest tangent of all time, going into this crazy rambling story about how they were unwitting participants in a drug deal in LA at e3. I remember being confused because they were doing the outro and the mp3 feed was only halfway done. I think the story was at least as long as the rest of the episode. Best. Episode. Eva. Thanks guys!

Was that the same episode where CJ told the story about being at some crazy party in LA during E3 week when two girls started 'going at it' on the floor? Hardware was involved. The double sided variety.

The Dyad talk is some of the worst I've ever heard. If you guys DID play through the whole thing, then you need some serious help in how you review games as you all came off pretty uneducated about the entire thing. Still, I guess I shouldn't be surprised. While Mike is a nice breath of fresh air in how he approaches games, everyone else has fallen off the boat as far as effectively reviewing games and now panders to fanboys of franchises they used to play and don't keep their minds very open to new experiences or new games - and I'm not just talking about Dyad, this happens a lot. If you manage to have some listeners whose tastes intersect with yours, that's great, but there's a lot of games that don't even get close to a fair shake with you ex-reviewers because you've stopped challenging yourself and how you look at and play games.

Player One Podcast just shot themselves in the foot.

Every game I try gets a fair shake. It has a limited amount of time to convince me that it is worth my money. Having played the Dyad demo, I have to agree with Phil and Mike. The difference is I'm happy I didn't spend any money to find out I'm not interested in that game.

If it gets a lot better during later levels, then the demo should have shown that.

i didn't play the demo. bought it strictly from the gameplay videos. you can probably find videos of the later levels online and judge from that angle, if you can figure out what they're doing. ;)

I'd watched a few videos before and they were what kept me from simply buying the game day one.

After the Dyad and Spelunky talk, I've got to say you guys have terrible terrible taste in games. Especially in an episode you spent praising among other things: Mole Mania, a Little Big Planet kart racer, an 8-bit iOS game based on Mystery Science Theater. Otherwise, love the show.

You must not have played the beta. I hate LBP, the kart racer is awesome.

Why does "you like different games than I do" always translate into "you have terrible taste in games?"

About to beat Sewer Shark for the 100th time.

Nor did he play Mole Mania, obviously.

And I liked Spelunky...

And just as emphasis for people who don't read the show notes, there are full-on Dark Knight Rises spoilers during the 2:50 - 9:00 mark.

I have the cart, and plenty of other Game Boy games. It's hard to argue against the genius of Miyamoto, but I never saw Mole Mania as much more than a logic puzzle--Except for the boss fights, which were kind of awesome.

About to beat Sewer Shark for the 100th time.

Because you are about to beat Sewer Shark for the 100th time!!!!! (Just sayin') And because no one really gave those games a chance before dismissing them as hash.

And because of after listening to 200+ episodes, I feel pretty confident in saying the terrible taste in games part.

They have interesting taste in games. That much is certain. I think it's a nice change of pace from the what everyone else does, and really helps give the show it's distinctive tone.

What constitutes giving those games a chance? When is someone allowed to decide they don't want to play something?

"Neogaf purgatory" is awful strong wouldn't you say? Besides this time next week no one will care what your opinion on Dyad is, we'll all be judging your reaction to the newest critical darling, Sound Shapes

Sometimes, even though you may not want to play the game due to a poor trial, or if you're misunderstanding the game mechanics, you really should spend more time with a title to see if it has anything to offer on a larger scale. It's just broadening horizons - which, let's be fair, you all have fairly broad horizons except for CJ, whose idea of gaming is absolutely despicable and laughable nowadays--but I just feel that as someone like you, Sewart, whose opinion I genuinely value, you'd be a hell of a lot more interested if you suffered a little more on those games you don't think you'd enjoy to make sure.

I know "well if it hasn't shown me these mechanics in X amount of time, then they made the game wrong" is a valid point - but I value your insight into games, and it makes me sad when a game is dismissed with a handwave when I really wanted to hear what you had to say about it.

Maybe you could return to reviewing games, for real? :)

Mmm, can't wait for the blind Sound Shapes hate. I predict it'll be next to Lumines as the next bad game for a Sony handheld :)

Why would someone spend more time on something they clearly don't enjoy? Is the hope that it "might get good" strong enough to endure that gauntlet?

At the end of the day there is a high chance that he might not enjoy the later levels. Does that mean that his opinion is invalid?

There is a fine line between giving something a fair change and not being satisfied with someone's opinion until they agree with you.

I watched the most recent vid of Mak creating a level in Sound Shapes and my eyes glazed over about 10 seconds in. Doesn't really say anything about the game itself tho' and a lot of talented folk have contributed content for it, so I'm still cautiously interested.

I'm the same way. It doesn't really seem like a game?

1. There's a definite pivot in the fellows' taste in games circa when they first left games writing, but that's too harsh. (It's harder to tell with Mike, as there's no exhaustive record of his interests.) If you compare, say, Jeff Gerstmann's taste at Gamespot to his taste at Giant Bomb, he appears to be 2 different people.

2. At this point in their lives, they have solid, informed taste. If something is very complex or odd, it ought to be from their favorite genres or from an old franchise. Again, with the exception of their pet genres (where they do hit the deep cuts), new stuff is likely that which has garnered mainstream attention. As with Jeremy Parish and Gamespite, it does suck when I'm sure they'd love or have an interesting take on a game that they've skipped (even mainstream stuff; C.J.'s aesthetic interests and Pokemon habit seem to suggest Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance, even if he's not a fan of the series proper). This doesn't justify any part of "bad taste."

3. I think more constructive criticism would be suggesting what games you would like to have them play. See above. Yes, it would be fantastic to hear discussion about Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown or Company Of Heroes 2, but I don't think it's incumbent upon them to stretch the breadth of their interests. That's because they are testing the depth of their interests by hitting Dyad and Spelunky. It's not their responsibility to share your opinion. It's rare that their analysis is, "I don't get it," so it's also not a failure here.

Of course it is. Just a bit of cheek. I am an unabashed lover of all things NeoGAF--the princes and the pricks.

Goddamn you Mike, why didn't you repeat the Celebrity Jeopardy thing to Phil.... ?

I was hoping for that "The Day is MINE!"

I want to use that as my Txt msg alert, but don't want to fetch the SNL one.

Your taste in games is bad and you should feel bad!

I'm not surprised CJ of all people doesn't get what I've been saying. This from the guy who can't even mentally wrap his head around what PC gaming is.

You definitely said it better than I could - but it makes me die inside when they handwave games off without understanding what they're trying to do or take the ball and run in the complete opposite direction because of an incorrect statement about the game, whether it's something they heard here or elsewhere.

It's not about them agreeing with anything. That's never been the problem. I don't always want people to agree anyhow, that's how we learn from others. I just wish for a little more effort. If I wanted to hear a 40 year old tell me why he didn't bother with a game, I'd go find someone off the street--however from P1, they've shown in the past they're very capable of reviewing games and even though that isn't their JOB on the podcast, I always hope to hear their insights into why a game is good or why it failed--and lately, I feel like they've been quick to dismiss things instead of discuss them - but hey, why should I want that? I'd rather listen to Phil waste our time with poorly-executed witty barbs.

I'll still listen when I can, but I can't help but feel there's too much of a disconnect with what P1 does vs what I want out of a podcast. It used to provide it, even in the (gasp) Dormer days, but I think it's just gone its own direction as opposed to what I want out of it. It pains me because I want to hear from Sewart and Mike more, and CJ used to be really good with his thoughts on game design and why things function as they do - and Phil used to be really good about giving me reasons to give a shit about games he likes. Now it's turned into the "CJ is a doof" show followed by "callbacks to Phil and Giana Sisters" and it's just burning me out.

I think I just had to air my grievances on how the show's been developing, and I wish there was more game talk and less exchanging of bad Simpsons references. A lot of people enjoy that, though, all I can do is offer my 2 cents.

I got a big kick out of the 3D gaming love in this week's episode. The guys are right, Motorstorm Apocalypse and Child of Eden are spectacular in 3D. I just started the Ico / SotC collection, and it had been outstanding as well. I'm actually pretty bummed out that Sony has all but given up on 3D gaming.

I was making a joke, but since you had to go ahead and make it personal... let me present you with...

~• THE 5 OR SO REASONS CJ DOESN'T PLAY PC GAMES •~

• I don't have any interest in spending any amount of money on a PC that I'll have to upgrade/tinker with/deal with Windows and its upkeep to play the latest games.
• Very little interest in sitting anywhere other than the couch to play games.
• No interest in using keyboard/mouse to play games, too lazy to figure out how to set up controller support on games I would want to play.
• No interest in keeping/storing a wireless keyboard/mouse around to play/launch PC games or use a desktop operating system on a TV. (I can barely keep the 3 control pads I do use easily accessible.)
• Not interested in the game genres most popular on PCs.
• The most acclaimed PC games that I would be interested in eventually come to consoles.

I'm just not interested. Never have been even when I owned a PC.

I changed my mind. I'm glad you agree with me.

I do not recommend the silver 360 controller with the 'improved' D-pad. This is mine after a Mortal Kombat session:

They improved it so much it breaks right off if you play with it a little rough.

One of those points (needing a wireless KB/mouse to actually turn on/launch the system) is valid. The rest are points you might have posted from a decade ago, when they made sense.

The keyboard I use for my PC is, I'll bet, not any bigger, and considerably lighter, than a Wii U controller.

The PC is the best gaming platform because you can play great games like Hemp Tycoon and Dinosaur Zookeeper from Adult Swim Games and also use Adult Swim Video to watch any episodes of 12 oz Mouse you may have missed. Can't do that on Nintendo!

Yeah, times have changed. Use your 360 controller, spend $600 on a PC and it's good for many years. I spent $500 on mine 5 years ago and I'm still truckin' with new games. Nothing special required. The arguments presented are antiquated for sure. Cmon CJ!

I remember hearing you complain about Steam Sales and how you had no interest in spending the money on a PC to get games cheap during sales. I laughed. Everything is easy now, you should enjoy a PC. Furthermore, there's a lot of games (not genres) that are PC-exclusive at the moment (and possibly all in the future as well) that would be worth your time. It'd be neat to hear about it.

I don't think I have ever complained about Steam sales - are you sure you're listening to the correct podcast audio? The only thing I recall saying is that I have no interest in PC games or buying a PC to play games. Which remains true. If I'm dismissive of sales, that's the reason.

And are complete garbage ports. I was with you before. Now I hate your face.

Plants Vs. Zombies, Zuma's Revenge, and the PC 'ports' I have bought beg to differ.

I would add to that list:

  • External CD-ROM drive takes to long to load games.
  • 256 colors is not suitable for looking at nude images of Cindy Crawford.
  • It takes too long to download games from the Warez section of my local BBS.
  • It's annoying to have to keep swapping out floppy discs while playing a game.
  • I hate having to flip through the game's manual to input the anti-piracy codes whenever I start a game.
  • I keep having to clean out the ball on my mouse. It attracts too much gunk!
  • The sound from the PC speaker is terrible.

Also the modem screech wakes the kids.

Have you seen Witcher 2 on PC? It's laughably poor in comparison.

I'm mad because the Brewers stink :(

I've seen Witcher 2 on PC and even the most staunch PC gamers here thought the 360 port was pretty good.

You could be a cubs fan. Aren't they in super tank mode now, like enough to make the bobcats blush? Is there anyone on that roster that a casual fan would recognize now that Dempster's gone?
