The Player 1 Podcast Topic

You definitely said it better than I could - but it makes me die inside when they handwave games off without understanding what they're trying to do or take the ball and run in the complete opposite direction because of an incorrect statement about the game, whether it's something they heard here or elsewhere.

Obviously, they've spoken for themselves, but not being part of any network means they don't need to follow up. My view: I think they offer a valuable middle-aged perspective. They answer these questions.

1. If this game is like something old, how is it similar, different, better, or worse?
2. If this game is new, how did the demo strike me?
3. If this game is new and I tried it, did it reward me for adapting to new experiences?
4. Was this game worth my investment?
5. Can I say something funny enough to make the other 3 laugh, despite themselves?

Now, I don't download demos, sometimes tune out in those sections, and definitely put no stock into their reactions to them. However, their job is to share their personal reactions with me. Souring on a demo of a game I like isn't commentary on the game; it's an opportunity to share why they disliked the demo. Think club house, not magazine of record.

It's not about them agreeing with anything. That's never been the problem...

I think I just had to air my grievances on how the show's been developing, and I wish there was more game talk and less exchanging of bad Simpsons references. A lot of people enjoy that, though, all I can do is offer my 2 cents.

(I do think Super Mario Brothers 1 1-1 has become an excuse to leave someone hanging where there could be dialogue.)

I think their summer lull in games buying is affecting you here. There are news-heavy episodes, but I'd say they're 1 of the 3 best at breaking down gameplay, and they do it often.

That said, this will always be constrained, in your view, by being an amateur podcast. Life dictates their gaming. Maybe skipping the episodes with many games listed (i.e., not much time devoted to each) is advisable? Player 1 Podcast definitely fills a niche for me, in any case.

dayam, so i guess everyone on P1P officially hates Dyad. well, at least you guys covered everything i complained about and gave it a second chance.

One of those points (needing a wireless KB/mouse to actually turn on/launch the system) is valid. The rest are points you might have posted from a decade ago, when they made sense.

The keyboard I use for my PC is, I'll bet, not any bigger, and considerably lighter, than a Wii U controller.

I have a media PC in my front room and we use one of these

I think we all know the reason CJ is not interested in PC gaming is because it is PC gaming and not Apple Gaming.

It's just the compatibility isn't fantastic. I have a bunch of steam games I can't play on my mac.

oh, i know. but at least i was wondering if that would entice him to connect one of his Macs to his TV to play the games that are compatible.

Can't follow you there. The show is great, and that I listen weekly despite rarely agreeing with them about games proves it, I think.

I'm not surprised CJ of all people doesn't get what I've been saying. This from the guy who can't even mentally wrap his head around what PC gaming is.

It's not about them agreeing with anything. That's never been the problem. I don't always want people to agree anyhow, that's how we learn from others. I just wish for a little more effort. If I wanted to hear a 40 year old tell me why he didn't bother with a game, I'd go find someone off the street--however from P1, they've shown in the past they're very capable of reviewing games and even though that isn't their JOB on the podcast, I always hope to hear their insights into why a game is good or why it failed--and lately, I feel like they've been quick to dismiss things instead of discuss them - but hey, why should I want that? I'd rather listen to Phil waste our time with poorly-executed witty barbs.

I'll still listen when I can, but I can't help but feel there's too much of a disconnect with what P1 does vs what I want out of a podcast. It used to provide it, even in the (gasp) Dormer days, but I think it's just gone its own direction as opposed to what I want out of it. It pains me because I want to hear from Sewart and Mike more, and CJ used to be really good with his thoughts on game design and why things function as they do - and Phil used to be really good about giving me reasons to give a shit about games he likes. Now it's turned into the "CJ is a doof" show followed by "callbacks to Phil and Giana Sisters" and it's just burning me out.

that is basically all this show is dude except most of the guys aren't yet 40 (granted, the crew's average age is probably north of 60 when you factor in Mik)

I was making a joke, but since you had to go ahead and make it personal... let me present you with...

~• THE 5 OR SO REASONS CJ DOESN'T PLAY PC GAMES •~

• I don't have any interest in spending any amount of money on a PC that I'll have to upgrade/tinker with/deal with Windows and its upkeep to play the latest games.
• Very little interest in sitting anywhere other than the couch to play games.
• No interest in using keyboard/mouse to play games, too lazy to figure out how to set up controller support on games I would want to play.
• No interest in keeping/storing a wireless keyboard/mouse around to play/launch PC games or use a desktop operating system on a TV. (I can barely keep the 3 control pads I do use easily accessible.)
• Not interested in the game genres most popular on PCs.
• The most acclaimed PC games that I would be interested in eventually come to consoles.

I'm just not interested. Never have been even when I owned a PC.
setting up a controller involves plugging a wired microsoft 360 controller into a USB port and letting the system autoamtically install drivers. gaming PCs themselves are dirt cheap (< 500 bucks); you can run nearly everything on mid to high settings with a card bought in the past couple of years. the PC runs the best console games better than any console and the range of genres would definitely be to your liking. at this point, the barrier to starting (paying a bit of cash, getting familiar with the interface, hooking it up to a TV if that is your thing, etc.) is the only legit concern. but you have plenty other game machines taking up your already limited time, so it's not like you are missing much if you are happy with your current setup.

i sit in front of a PC for work a lot, a lot, a LOT. If I am gonna play a game, it had better not be in front of a *(#@$&#@*$ PC. That's just me though.

I actually have a set up with my computer and my consoles are hooked up to the same monitor, and I still prefer console gaming for some reason. I could so easily buy a new graphics card and play PC games that look as good, if not better, than the consoles, but I still go back to consoles every time. It may be a UI thing, or maybe I just enjoy console exclusives more, but I honestly think it is just out of habit. The only games I have to play on PC are adventure games and, for some odd reason, 2D platformers.

Sometimes, even though you may not want to play the game due to a poor trial, or if you're misunderstanding the game mechanics, you really should spend more time with a title to see if it has anything to offer on a larger scale.

It's true that some trials are not indicative of the final product but nobody has an obligation to buy a game and spend more time with it after playing a trial and disliking it.

The whole point of a trial is, you know, to try it out.

Plus they are very upfront, when they dislike a trial they don't pretend to have played the whole game.

Bane-voice makes me laugh and I haven't even seen TDKR.
Me neither

Work on some good reward tiers and you've got yourself a backer.

I've been on and off the P1P, it's always on my rotation but I don't always listen to it.

Now, with the 300 episode, a question popped: whatever happened to Greg Ford? He went back to school or something but that was the last I heard.

He works on a company that doesn't allow him to do the podcast.

I think he does consulting, if i remember right.

He graduated a long while ago.

But for saying this I probably have an spy come and hunt me down :P

I'm a long time fan of the Player One podcast, back from the Dan Dormer days. He used to talk about how great the 360 and WOW was, and how poor anything else was.

One time on GAF I said something rude about the two Gregs. Sorry about that.

In my defence, there was a sense of dismissiveness at the time. Someone would be excited about a game and it was met with 'meh'. I think the dynamic now allows people more space to be excited. As much as the Little Big Planet and Dynasty Warriors are made fun of, they're still given plenty of space when people want to talk about them

Greg Ford was actually excellent on the show when he was on the show. It was a shame when he was playing games or watching sports, but when he was involved he had a lot of great things to say. I miss Ford!

All said, Mike really rounds out the cast and the last twelve months have been the best the podcast has ever been!

I think kickstarter funds should go to the long suffering partners of the Player 1 Podcast!
Baby Finn's first words will be spoken with a Bane voice!

I tossed in $25. I really want to get the soundtrack. Although I am considering bumping it up to the $40 tier.

For a guy working in Seattle, he sure does live in San Francisco.
