well my 14.1" laptop with a wif-fi single with google voice can make calls.. and send and receive text messages
That's fine, but I'd still need a handheld computer/phone that fits in a normal pocket and can be operated with one hand.

Galaxy S3 screen size is perfect...Its not that hard to hold for me either. Its really jarring holding an iphone or my ipod touch now because the screen just feels way too small

there is enough space for all the products available, and it can meet everyones needs instead of having everyone contrained to a 4 inch screen and having some people "wish" there was a bigger one.
also, most people dont even use phones for calling as their main use for a phone anymore

I love the 4.65" screen on my Galaxy Nexus. So great for watching videos, browsing the web and other things. Is it too large for comfortable one-handed operation? Maybe, just a bit, but that's very rarely a serious issue. And you really need both hands for much of what a modern smartphone allows you to do anyway; only pretty basic things can efficiently be done using just the thumb on one of your hands (the rest of your fingers would be holding the phone). For most other things you're probably gonna have to get the other hand involved no matter the screen size, and in those situations I'd rather have a larger screen (within reason) to do that stuff on. So yeah, I'm very happy with the size of the GNex and its screen, and I hope the GNex2 (or whatever) is around that size too.
I definitely couldn't go back to something as small as 3.5" (which is what my first Android phone had). That would just feel tiny and cramped compared to what I'm now used to.

"Large" phones are great. I am a fully grown adult and can handle things larger than credit cards. I also wear regular pants with regular pockets so "large" devices are no problem.

I used to have OG iphone then to Droid X and finally LG Optimus (3.2)

My mobile data plan doesn't cost anything close to what I pay for my home connection, and what it does cost is very easily justified by always having Internet access no matter where I am. It's so damn convenient, couldn't live without it now that I'm used to it. I don't think you realize how great having an always-online smartphone is until you get one, but once you enter that world you simply can't go back.

I think most people see the sweetspot at about 3.5-4.3 inches, give or take.
It's a damn shame that people can't go without the internet these days. I cringe every time I see a group of people on their phones rather than talking. It is a detriment to our society.
Its information about any and everything, any and everywhere. I suppose it depends on what you do or the kind of person you are, but for me its nothing but a net positive having a smartphone.
As for the size, I like the OneX, Galaxy Nexus (that I own) and the S3 alot. The Note is to large for me personally, but I have nothing against folks that love it. I have never understood why it bothered people to the point of wanting to shout out how 'ridiculous' it is.

There are issues with always being online, for sure, but for me they are far outweighed by the convience of always having access to any info I might need at any given moment. Such info includes tram/buss departures, my calendar and schedule, my banking info (account balance, etc), my online documents (I do everything in Google Docs these days - local word processing is so last decade), my e-mail, etc, etc. Everything is online nowadays, including large parts of our lives (well, for those of us who have embraced this brave new world), and there's nothing wrong with wanting to have access to all of that 24/7. Should people put down their phones and just talk to each other a bit more often? Yes, but that doesn't take away from the brilliance of Internet-enabled smartphones.

I like the iPhone size. Fits my pocket. If it was a slight bit bigger it would be OK, but any phone I can't reach every corner with one thumb is too big.

I don't get that argument. How small pockets do you people have that you couldn't possibly get anything larger than a 3.5" phone in there? I have absolutely zero trouble getting my Galaxy Nexus into my pocket with room to spare, and I wear perfectly normal jeans with perfectly normal pockets.

That being said, I would never give up real estate once I'm used to it. My GS2 is at 4.5' and that's my starting point when I decide to use my upgrade.
Galaxy note fits my hand PERFECTLY.
A big reason I sold my 4s is that the screen was too small for even something as simple as watching netflix when I job on the treadmill.
Anything less than 4 inches is too small to use for more than 30 sec for me.
That said I actually talk on my cell phone maybe 30 min or less a month. Phone calls are for elderly family members and emergencies only.

Wouldn't the thickness of the phone be a bigger issue than the width or height then? Or do skinny jeans actually have smaller pockets for some reason? (I wear reasonably skinny jeans myself - they're certainly not baggy by any stretch of the imagination - but they're not super tight.)
By the same token, I think Mudkips' comment about wearing big-boy pants and being able to fit the Note 2 in there is a little odd (I wonder what pants he's wearing).
I could fit a current-gen Note in the pocket of the jeans I'm wearing right now. But would it be comfortable to have a 6x3.5" hunk of solid plastic/glass there all day? I'm not so sure. I think it would annoy me to feel it every time I sat down.
I'm sure some Note owners will say otherwise, but I just don't see it as something I'd carry in a pocket all day.

Went the same exact upgrade route as you: Droid Incredible (3.7" screen, but roughly the same physical dimensions as the iPhone) to the Galaxy Nexus (a 4.65" screen that sounds bigger than it is; it uses a portion of the screen for navigation buttons that would otherwise require extra bezel space).
I abhored these 4.3"+ phones. The thought of having a phone that I could not unobtrusively fit in my front pocket was enough to make me want to hold on to my Droid Incredible forever (or switch to the iPhone 4S for that godly form factor). But you know what? My apprehensions were totally unfounded. I picked up a Galaxy Nexus san contract with the intent to return it or sell it if I was unhappy with the size.
Funnily enough, I actually find the Galaxy Nexus to be more comfortable in my pocket that my old phone since it is thinner and just as light. It's only about 1/3" wider, which is rather negligible, and has actually been a little helpful since my old phone had the tendency to occasionally fall sideways in my pocket instead of standing upright. And while the GNexus is a little under 3/4" taller, it doesn't seem to matter as even my shortest pockets have a surplus of vertical space.
I could never go back to a sub-4" phone at this point, but I don't think I would go much, if any, larger than the Galaxy Nexus. I'm thinking 4"-4.5" is probably idea, with the exact dimensions depending on the physical form factor of the phone.
And for the skinny jean crowd, width and depth of the phone should be the two important considerations. Less than an inch of additional height on the phone is going to impact its pocketability for you slim to none.

I wear skinny jeans and it would probably be harder to get an iPhone in than a Galaxy S3 because the iPhone is so damn thick. (but both would fit in just fine)

yes, I hate how phones have gotten bigger over the years since smart phones became popular.
That's why I ended up with and Xperia Ray. It's the smallest, yet very capable, smart phone I could find.

My phone is actually thinner than the iphone not counting the Otterbox monstrosities many people use as their case.
Only had a problem with one really skinny pair of jeans and they are so tight that I have a hard time even pulling out change.

Meh. As someone that had a huge brick phone in the 90's I really don't enjoy the large 5+ inch phones.
I have so many gizmo's and gadgets that I don't really feel the *need* for a large screen phone. If I want to use my phone I'll rock my iphone. If I want something larger I'll use my nexus 7 or kindle fire. If I wanna go beyond that I have a 15 inch laptop. Or my 23 inch desktop. Or my 42 inch tv.
I have a coworker with a galaxy note. I think the phone is nice and very powerful but regardless of my mammoth sized hands I don't really like the size.

I barely notice my Galaxy Nexus in my pocket, thanks to its thinness. Of course, the definition of "uncomfortably large" varies from person to person, but is 9.28 mm (.365") - that's how much wider the GNex is than the 4S - really the straw that's gonna break that particular camel's back? Sure, it's also a bit taller, but that doesn't seem like it should be very significant for pocketability.

Went from the 4s to Galaxy Nexus to S3 and don't believe I could go back to the small screen. S3 fits my pocket/hands perfectly and screen is much more usable than the 4s. Less need for the iPad now, would sell it if it wasn't works.
