3DS XL First Impressions/Previews

Thanks but no, it doesn't help. Because the scratch on your Galaxy didn't come from it flawed design, right?
I always put screen protectors on my DSs. Did it day one with my original 3DS. And good I did so, because the screen protector on the upper screen got scratched as hell by the bottom one.

Now, I thought I would be safe with the new design, but wanted to put protectors on regardless. A little to late...

Will call Nintendo customer service now. I'm pissed.

It isn't a flip phone.

*zing*

Funny!?

Sorry to hear about what happened. I've been blessed with no scratching on my original 3DS, just annoying smudge marks from the lower screen.

My XL screen doesn't have any scratches and I've had it for, I'd say, three weeks now. The weird thing is that I've been carrying it around with me, jammed into my old phat DS carry case (it's either that, or no protection at all at the moment), so I was kind of expecting it to go wrong, what with all the horror stories here. So far, nothing. Both screens are very easily smudged (I never touch the top screen yet there are a ton of fingerprints on it) though, but then you don't notice it when gaming.

I really hope all this talk about the shell being easily removable turns out to be true. It's only a matter of time before a place like DealExtreme will provide us with the housing kits. I originally exchanged my DS Lite's housing and it turned out to be beautiful. It was a glossy, yellow plastic, with a white Pikachu in the corner. See here: http://www.dealextreme.com/p/design...using-shell-casing-for-nds-lite-13868?item=18 I kept all of the black face buttons, dpad, and triggers to give it more of a Pikachu look too. If this is true for 3DS, I'd love to see it in a shiny/matte orange! Quick, someone find the 3DS orange prototype from E3 2010!

Edit for possibilites: This means that we could potentially have this: http://www.zeldainformer.com/themes...cords/images/uploads/Transparent-3DS-XL-2.jpg, because this: http://www.dealextreme.com/p/replacement-housing-case-for-nds-lite-translucent-blue-10859?item=22 exists. It looks so nice that I might consider doing it for fun, the only thing that turns me off are how the speakers look and the white border around the screen (I could just keep the black one I have though).

The easily removable shells are the coloured parts, not the black plastic main part.

I wouldn't have a problem with that, makes it a lot easier overall then. I don't dislike the two-tone colors... they've been going on for a while. I'm pretty sure complete housing kits will come eventually too if the simple outer shell ones end up happening.

Anyone else going through Newegg? Do you think they will be shipping Saturday, or Monday. Or if they get the units early enough, same day delivery or Monday at the earliest? I got the free shipping option, so I'm guessing I'll get mine around wed-thurs.

Just been given a £15 card for the E-shop, any idea what I should get? I've already got Pullblox, the Ambassador games, the Kirby 3D classic and Mario Land.

A bit confused with transfer, no actual games transfer right, just licenses?

So I transfer than swap the sd cards?

That's the easiest way to do it. The XL comes with an SD card twice the size of the original's though, so if you can be bothered, it's worth it to not swap the cards and redownload your stuff (if you did the transfer, it should all appear under your download history).

EDIT:

VVVVVV is one of my favourite games ever. Catchy music, fun gameplay, challenging levels, and the 3D looks pretty neat (it's quite subtle; seems similar to Kirby from what I've seen of that). It's cheaper on the PC, so if you prefer a bigger screen, there's not really much point getting the 3DS version. However, if you're like me and appreciate the portability/3D/AWESOME ALTERNATE FINAL LEVEL MUSIC, then the 3DS version is well worth the money.

Freakyforms is being pulled from the eShop soon, so if that sounds like your type of thing, get it ASAP (or have to pay five times as much for the upcoming retail release).

Mighty Switch Force is a pretty fun platformer; it got free additional content a while ago too.

I've heard good things about Mutant Mudds and Sakura Samurai, but haven't had the chance to play them. Sakura Samurai doesn't seem to be out in Europe, so I guess that's out.

Or you could splurge on Theatrhythm DLC if you have it. Actually, scratch that - if you don't have it yet and have any interest in Final Fantasy/rhythm games, get that.

You can also just copy the contents of the SD card to your computer's desktop, then put them on the new SD card. Way faster than redownloading.

So I've been playing Kingdom Hearts 3D nonstop the past week and I'm salivating at how pretty it'll look on the XL.

Anybody who has the game and system have any impressions?

So I heard GameStop only gives you $50 trade in for a 3DS...definitely not trading it in for that low amount.

Hey all - just got off the phone with GS - they're offering an extra $50 on 3DS trade-in towards the purchase of an XL. So that's a total of $100 off a $199 3DS XL. Great deal. They don't do in-store data transfers (officially) though.

Is anybody aware if you can just back up all 3DS data to a computer, and just transfer it all back to a new 3DS XL SD card? My Club Nintendo/Virtual account isn't locked into this 3DS is it?

So does anything like this exist in the west?

Those are slide pad covers, but afaik, they're only available in japan, and I haven't seen them on any import sites.

I've been playing a lot of MK7 lately, and my thumb keeps slipping off the pad. A couple of grooves on that pad would go a long way to prevent slipping.

No. I'm pretty sure the data transfer is required. Unless you just mean copying data to a new sd card.

I don't follow - do I need to connect the 3DS to the XL? Is there a difference between Account Transferring and transferring the list of downloaded games (like the Ambassador Program freebies)?

YesAsia has clear ones 'dispatched within 7-14 days' which sounds ominous: http://www.yesasia.com/global/3ds-slide-pad-cover-clear-japan-version/1031262035-0-0-0-en/info.html

YesAsia used to have all of them but they're long gone now, eBay doesn't seem to have any, either.

I don't think they would fit the XL because the circle pad is a bit smaller and deeper.

Correct me if I'm wrong but, I think what you are saying is that you want to use your games (stored in 3ds sd card) on the 3ds xl sd card. If that's the case you do need the transfer option. After that you can copy the sd data to any sd card you like.

You can get the clear and pink ones here

Gotcha - my goal is just to take EVERYTHING (account, images, games, etc) from the 3DS and put it on the XL.

What you're saying is that can I preempt my trade-in by putting everything on the 3Ds's SD card, transferring the SD card to my computer, and putting all that data onto the XL when I get home?

Because Nintendo's site says you need both systems and an internet connection: http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/systems/3ds/en_na/ht_system.jsp

Thanks!

Edit: but then there's also this: http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/as...r-ht-settings-transfer-data-between-sd.jsp&l=

I'll have a look, cheers!

I really wish Nintendo would up their game on the Virtual Console front, I'd give anything for the current Wii libery to be on the E-shop, I just want SNES games so badly :(

Same here =( I mean, strictly speaking, there's no reason they shouldn't be able to open up the entire Wii VC collection, is there? The 3DS must be powerful enough for an N64 emulator?

Imagine how awesome it'd be if you could play all your Wii Virtual Console games on the go...

Yes. Afaik as long as you do the system transfer you can do that.

I'd probably pay for a system that could do just that. How much I'd love to have a big SNES library on an SD card that I can play on the 3DSXL's screens .

:(

Just got home with mine.

If any existing 3DS owners are on the fence at all about upgrading, I really can't stress enough how much of an improvement the XL is in every single way. It's a night and day difference. The screens are huge, and the build quality is so much better it's insane. It just feels so good in your hands! The D-Pad is actually usable!

To me, this is just as big an upgrade as the DSPhat to DSLite, highly recommended it!

(The data transfer is great too, a horde of Pikmin run across your screen carrying bits of data :3 )

How is the 3D/sweet spot/hinge?

This is exactly what I was hoping for, thank you. I won't be trading in my zelda 3DS case off of the system.

Does anyone know if they REQUIRE the SD card to be traded in with the system?

Yeah, I was pretty disappointed when I booted it up and didn't see SNES games. I just kept looking, thinking I must be missing them some how. Shit needs to happen.

I am returning my 3DS XL to Nintendo because of the yellow tint on the top screen (most noticeable with 3d off)
would be all right with it if the bottom screen matched.

Also as my 1st 3DS XL with the dead pixel didn't have the yellow tint it irritates me,
hopefully they will fix or exchange it for me.

You do two things - a license transfer and a data transfer.

You need both systems and an internet connection to transfer the licenses. The SD card just has the game files, but you can't play those games without first transferring the licenses over.

After transferring the licenses can I simply copy over everything on the 2 gb SD card to the 4 gig card via my PC instead of redownloading everything on the 4 gig card?

How is the 3D/sweet spot/hinge?

The 3D seems better... the sweet spot is pretty much the same as it was on the original model, but the effect itself seems a good deal stronger. I don't know if my eyes just have to adjust to the larger screens, but I played pretty much everything on my OG 3DS with the slider set on full, but I've only got it half way on my XL.

The hinge feels much, much more solid on the XL. The original 3DS felt like the thing could snap in half at any minute, but I'd say the XL hinge is probably the sturdiest feeling one out of any DS model so far.

Edit: Okay, well, I just dug my DSPhat out and damn I forgot how indestructible this thing felt haha! The XL might not, technically be the sturdiest one yet then... but it's definitely DSPhat-comparable :P

So if the Gamestop doesn't have an internet connection, I can't transfer over the licenses?? I'm trying to avoid being stuck at the store with no alternatives, and I really don't want to lose all my game licenses/account verification, etc

You need internet to make the transfer, yes.

I'm just going to enable tethering (wi-fi) on my rooted phone.

Right. You need an internet connection to transfer. The system contacts Nintendo's servers.

Anyone know of a retailer that sells EU 3DS XL with a charger and maybe 2~5 games for under 200 pounds?

GAME have got a 3DS XL, charger and a choice of one game out of Kingdom Hearts/Kid Icarus/Mario Kart/Heroes of Ruin for £175. That's probably the best deal around atm.

Hmm I'll tell my brother about that thanks, I think he mentioned that deal for me before, will tell him to get Kid Icarus if the others are not available.
