IGN: ""How Sony Won Gamescom Before It Even Started"

Also, when can we expect a copy and paste article from nintendo.ign.com about how it makes Nintendo’s absence so much worse?

Wow, two words, that was easier than expected.
How Sony Won Gamescom Before It Even Started
…and why it makes Nintendo's absence so much worse.

Nintendo should be afraid of Sony. Before the PlayStation publisher’s pre-Gamescom press conference this week, Sony’s foreseeable software future seemed weak. The PlayStation Vita seemed only to have a handful of promising titles for the remainder of 2012 – LittleBigPlanet PS Vita, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, a Call of Duty game we knew next to nothing about, a Persona 4 remake, and a poorly timed Assassin’s Creed tie-in were the PlayStation brand’s best and brightest. But after displaying a strong lineup of exclusive games on both PlayStation platforms, a brilliant new business strategy, and confidence in risky game ideas, Sony’s future couldn’t look better than it does now.

Gamescom will be Sony’s show. This is bad news for Nintendo, who didn’t even bother to show up.

Sony’s Cross Buy announcement undoubtedly earned it a great deal of gamer goodwill. Buying Battle Royale, the new Ratchet & Clank, and Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time on PS3 scores you a free Vita copy. This is an incredible move for Sony. These are three of its most popular and promising titles, and you can play them anywhere, any time, for one price. Cross Buy puts PlayStation fans ahead of the curve, and rewards them for purchasing PS3 games they were likely to buy anyway. It looks amazing on the back of the box, it’s something people will tell their friends about, and it makes a Vita worth owning for every single PlayStation fan. That’s just smart marketing.

Until Dawn, Rain, and Puppeteer all represent something astounding about Sony’s initiative toward supporting innovative ideas. Following Papo & Yo, Journey, and many other clever concepts, this trio of games look unlike almost anything you’ve played. Each of them certainly has a niche appeal, but Sony’s willing to risk a limited audience if it means putting exclusive, original games on its platforms. Add in the casual mentions of Beyond: Two Souls and The Last of Us during the conference, and you’re looking at a large stack of Sony-only goods. Oh, and let’s not forget Media Molecule’s cute and creative Tear Away, either.

For the first time since I bought it, I want to play my Vita. A quirky indie game like Sound Shapes reassures me that more great stuff is on the way, and Sony really came out of the corner throwing haymakers. I want Black Ops Declassified because it looks like a true Call of Duty game. Killzone Mercenary is the Sony sequel I want most on the platform I’m aching to play.

'How Nintendo won E3 before it even started'

'How Microsoft won nothing before it even started'

Not that I care too much about this, but in what reality should Microsoft be afraid of stuff like Sly Cooper, Ratchet and Clank, and a Cross Play feature that promotes Sony's handheld?

The only other company that should slightly watch out for this is Nintendo, and even they cannot be too afraid from those mascots and the feature.

Sony did not have to have a great showing at Gamescom to "win" against MS or Nintendo. It just needed to do it for its own sake.

Should have quoted the whole thing, the end is even better.

Before I came to Gamescom, I played my Xbox more than any other platform. That changes the moment I get back to my living room. All of a sudden, the future of gaming in my life is dominated by a platform I traditionally ignored for my Xbox 360.The level of imagination and accessibility in these original, exclusive games is so much more interesting to me than another Halo game. Make no mistake: I’m thrilled about Halo 4, but it’s the one and only Xbox exclusive I plan to play this fall; the only other two exclusives I can think of in the next few months are Gears of War: Judgment and Fable: The Journey – of those, I only have faith and interest in the former.

...

Gamescom belongs to Sony, as does my heart. This is a brilliant sign of things to come, and it was all done before the show had even begun.

Sony already is ahead in the Euro land. However they are doing great to maintain it.

Unlike US, Consoles Sales in Germany are increasing i read.

@ others

we are allowed to have Vita doomed thread ? Sony doomed thread ?

but when a praise thread appears its just PR bullshit ? Yeah right.

I love how announcements of games that won't be out for another year have made this author do a complete 180 and now he will play the PS3 as soon as he gets home!

"Look at all these games coming out in the future for the PS3! OMG<3<3<3<3<3!!!"

"Forget you Xbox! Time to go get my PS3 updated with all the patches, do all the installs for all the PS3 games I own and play exclusively on the PS3 now!"

Don't care about any system wars bullshit but as a gamer I enjoyed the stuff Sony were showing. New IPs and great deals like PS+ are just what I want to see. Meanwhile MS once again demonstrated that they don't give a shit about Europe. IGN are right.

And of course Sony was going to 'win' Gamescom out of the first parties, when the other two didn't even show up!

Came here to post it. It's pretty easy to win when you're the only one in the room.

Mindblowing. I had to check the url a few times to see if I was directed to the forums by mistake.

If that's true then why should they be afraid? The whole tone of this article feels like Sony is somehow dominating gaming when MS deliberately chose not to show up. They don't care and are happy with being number 1 in the US.

In order for sony to win, we'd have to actually consider microsoft still a company that cares about games. They are too busy trying to turn xbox into the next tivo and compete with apple in the living room to care about games.

They had a great showing at Gamescom, the conference was surprisingly good and had a some great surprises. Sony should maintain this trend going forward! E3 2013 is going to be the bomb!

The writing reminds me of the "Vita destined to sell" article IGN also had a while back. Are they written by the same dude?

Gamescom is in Germany, Germany is PC land. PC "won" and will always "win" here. Which is probably one of the reasons MS and Nintendo didn't even show up to begin with. So how exactly did Sony win, and against whom?

Sony deserves credit. Of course, it pretty much won by default since Microsoft and Nintendo didnt have any conferences. I think Capcom only announced like 1 new game and Ubisoft and EA just focused on showing off known titles from what I can remember. The article does come off being a cheerleader, but part of it is due to the journalist wanting to justify his PS Vita purchase. Obviously ,he feels it has ,but not sure if others feel the same way.

Actually they still lost because they spent however many millions for that show (which in the grand scheme of things will mean very little in turning around Sony's fortunes) and now they are even more in the red. As a result they will be even less able to pay for exclusives now, which actually results in Nintendo and MS winning Gamescom.

To own both a Vita and PS3 right now is more expensive than an iPad. MS does not care about the portable market.

I think there's a valid wider point here just taking PS3 and Sony's pretty consistent flow of interesting new game announcements for it. It'd be nice if MS matched or topped that kind of platform support.

PS3 also has a huge sucesss in Germany as well =) and many ps3 exclusive genreally sell quite well their

Very few people actually follows Gamescom. Only hardcore gamers follows it and they have already made up their mind a long time ago as to which systems they like the most.

Does Nintendo not give a shit about Japan because they don't show up at TGS?
