Guild Wars 2 Launch Date announced: August 28th, 2012

there was another Titan Alliance drama thread on reddit, but the opening post had been deleted before I got there and I honestly have no idea what it was about

As much as I would prefer your second idea, I'm almost 100% sure it will 'just' be instanced housing in your home instance, and while I love housing as an idea, Lotro showed me how irrelevant instanced housing is after you toyed around with it for a while.

LotRO's housing system wasn't very good. Stuff got stuck into slots and there was no way that I saw to move things exactly where you wanted them. Vanguard allowed for full 3-dimensional movement, and we did some pretty cool stuff with it (We made a second floor in one of the taller rooms with tables).

But no MMO I've played has gotten housing right; there needs to be things that have function rather than aesthetic value. Chests that increase your bank storage. Gardens to grow your own herbs, crafting stations that have a chance to use less material or give you rare, unique effects. Bookshelves that automatically update with all of the lore books you've found in the world, so collectors can watch their progress or re-read their favorites. Trophies for achievements or events. An overall housing rank based on the quality and number of your goods that makes your neighborhood better, which lures in new exotic vendors, new neighborhood features, etc.

That's the kind of stuff I want to see, and more. And I'm really hoping ANet does more than just a cosmetic-only place to hang your hat.

Just pre-purchased on a whim...not sure what to expect.

Guys. I'm excited. 6 days to go! t_t

5 days, 9 hours, 18 minutes.

Fuck it. Bought into the hype. Downloading as we speak. Hopefully i stick with this one. I swear, i'm an MMO addict, i end up trying out every major MMO that has come out recently. (TOR, TERA, TSW).

Lack of Subscription + Lots of things to do + Endgame starts at level 1 = You'll probably stick with this one.

Spies, huh?

Wish i caught that thread before it was closed. Would have been a funny read considering how pathetic that sounds (Sending spies or accusing another alliance of spying on them)

Internet Dragons; Serious business.

Yeah, link it plz!

**Edit: Holy hell, I'm late to the party. Forgot to refresh after an hour of being away. I'm blaming the beer..........again.

I like what WildStar has shown of their housing so far. You gather materials in the world to help build, you can garden, and you can build a giant cannon that I assume is for defense of your little piece of rock. Against what? I don't know, but it seemed pretty cool.

I like that idea. Gathering building materials for your house is a neat idea. Would be pretty sweet if you could build your house anywhere in GW2 and just have it instanced (and not have other characters see that there is an instance there so it doesnt interupt there gameplay. Perhaps let others see your house if youre in a party together?). Though that seems rather complicated. Theyll probably just stick your house in your home city instance somehwhere

Vanguard had you gather materials for your house (and furniture, and boats, the largest of which were like floating houses themselves), stone, lumber, nails and such. You really needed to get materials from multiple gatherers and crafters to get anything done.

It also had large zones devoted just to housing, and you'd see large islands with 4 or 5 plots on them, a few large ones with Guild Hall plots, etc. You had to pay rent for it, which kept players involve.

Too bad Vanguard had so many other problems, it really was impressive.

See, I dont think id like that. Having a zone just designated for a crap ton of houses seems dull to me and just an excuse for the players obsessed with their epeen to show off.

I think it would be absolutely awesome if you could find some beautiful corner of the world and build your house right there. Obviously, that would have to be instanced in a way that other players would not see your house or instance (unless partied together maybe) since that would ruin their experience/gameplay.

I honestly have no idea if instancing like that is possible, though phasing in WoW seemed to work like that, so Id imagine they could do it if they wanted.

As for Eve, I can actually understand spying since arent you basically playing for real money? Fuck the honor code in that situation, id say

if anyone's interested. Should be the same thing, basically. Edit: D'oh, it's just one post. Oh well.

Holy crap. Bring the popcorn, this is some seriously pathetic shit.

Sounds like Legacy was actually spying on them though. God, thats pathetic.

All I saw was acknowledgement that they had friends that played in Titan Alliance guilds. That Titan Alliance themselves consider that as proof of active spying doesn't mean that it is, or that it isn't. I really know nothing of the players involved, but certainly Legacy seems to take things much less seriously and more laid back.

It's really telling that reading Titan Alliance's post and selected evidence gave me such a strongly negative impression of Titan Alliance and a neutral or mildly positive impression of Team Legacy. I find it quite funny that their claims and the "proof" they presented were so wildly inconsistent.

Bottom line; I didn't think it could happen, but I think even less of Titan Alliance now. Thank god for the free migrations during the first week to ensure we can avoid them.

I'm actually pulling out of a guild in the Ascension Alliance and they've been nothing but a stellar laid back crew. I've had to leave them because I've got too much shit on my plate to help WvW.

Well, in Vanguard all of the housing models looked the same and you couldn't affect the outside, so e-peen never went further than "I have a house and you don't". You could allow people to access the interiors though, but most people kept their places locked.

As far as the zones being dull, they were actually located in really nice locations (island chains, mountain tops, along beaches) and clumped in small groups of five or six houses with plenty of space between them. They were pretty as hell, it didn't look cluttered or dull at all.

For GW2, I would love to see a large WvW-sized housing district with individual neighborhoods scattered throughout. Each neighborhood would have something like eight houses, and would work together to improve their overall area. Each house would have a value based on the items within it, the size of the house, etc. Everyone's house value is added together, and the neighborhood gets new features and amenities based on everyone's contribution.

For example, a neighborhood starts off as 10 little mud huts. We all work on our houses, upgrading them to cabins, then large brick houses, and eventually large stone mansions. We upgrade our rough-hewn tables to luxurious teak, fill our homes with trophies and plant trees on the exterior to make them gorgeous. As we do so, our neighborhood reaches reward thresholds which everyone votes on. Some are aesthetic (A well, gazeebos, signs, high walls, etc.), some can be interacted with (fishing ponds, trading post dealers, bankers), some are temporary events (village festivals, etc.). Decorating for holidays gives us points and unlocks special holiday events.

Hell, housing could even be semi-competitive, with awards and achievements for being the best neighborhood in your area.

If anything, this tells us Titan's intention as well as their moral code. I think it puts them in a positive light. I don't know how you read it - or if it's even literally feasible - but you took it the wrong way. Even employing my rhetorical devices, they make a good case and builds logos, pathos, and ethos.

Thought this was interesting. Apparantly this stuff was leaked at GameCon, so who knows how legit it really is, but it sounds reasonable so I'm assuming it's true.

1. The accounts will have a system autenticator (digital and possibly physical) similar to WoW - official information will come out next week.

2. In case of account hacking the account may be restored to their prior state before the intrusion.

3. There will be live in-game support (similar to WoW) through tool that we already use to report BUGS, we will be able to contact a GM in real time.

4. The end-game is not 100% completed, there is much work to do, but ANET is not expecting the the end-game to be reachable quickly, they are now focused on the release, if all goes well they will move on to work at 100% in the endgame (DiabloIII nostalgia??).

PS - They are aware of the disaster of Diablo with the end-game and ensured that will not happen to GW2, after the release team will jump all just work in end-game.

5. Are being explored new methods of PvP, GvG is confirmed to return to GW2, but said they could not disclose much more.

6. New merchandise will be launched on 28/08/2012, including Dragon T-Shirts.

Fun facts:

All 270 workers from NCSOFT who are working in GW2 will be online in head-start, including those in Europe and Asia, just in case.

Well as I just drive 3 hours and have slept very badly, there are things that probably do not remember, I'll post pictures later with the ppl of ANET and GW booth.

The community manager for the French territory speaks Portuguese because her grandparents are living in Algarve.

NCSOFT launched a new sound-track of GW2 during the event (the first all-the-time containing lyrics).

But... this is a video game. A video... game. Video game. Not saying you can't be a hardcore gamer - but this shit goes beyond testing your own prowess.

Eh, i would okay with something like that. I just prefer the house in the middle of nowhere (nowhere being in the actual gameplay world) to designated housing areas.

That's certainly desirable on some level, but then you have problems with people building houses in places that impact other players unless they make specific lots... and then those are all scooped up and the world runs out of plots (this happened in Vanguard, for example).

And while having a lonely house in the middle of nowhere sounds cool, it kind of takes away from the focus ANet has on community.

Thats why Id only want that if Arenanet does some sort of phasing where other players cant see your house or your plot/instance whatever unless you are grouped with them, so it wont impact other players gameplay/experience. Lots really wouldnt be an issue then since you could theoritially build a ton of houses in the same spot.

No idea if that is actually feasible, but I would love to see it happen

Personally, I think arenanet is just going to have a house for us in the instanced part of our home city. I dont consider that very community driven.

I think that's very likely what we'll see, honestly. It may not be community driven, but it is another thing to do and it can have some impact on your own experience.

This is, however, so wrong that I literally don't know where to begin. Killing stuff is the WORST possible way to level up in GW2. In fact, gathering every node you come across, while still a really poor way to level up, is still several times better. Of course, it itself is dwarved by Hearts and Dynamic Events, where probably over half of the content doesn't even involve combat. To top it off, you have POI's, Vistas, skill challenges (how exactly are you going to buy abilties without doing those?), etc. Sure, combat is a big part of the game (rightly so; it's one of the strongest points of the game, and it should play to it) but you could probably level up all the way to 80 without killing an enemy, and in fact we were discussing so in the GAFGuild boards.

Don't take this the wrong way, but to some extent it sounds like what you really want SWG Crafting and Housing: The Game, and are simply disregarding any activities (even non-combat ones) that are not these. It's cool that you like one or two activity from a particular MMO, but I'm sure you realize stating a MMO to be inferior by lacking a focus on that activity (or even by doing it differently) is a very subjective perspective at best and a flimsy argument most likely...
First, I didn't mean to start a big argument about all this stuff. It's just that I've been playing MMOs for about twenty years now, going back to when a list of all the muds on the internet fit on a single page. I just hate how WoW swooped in and basically murdered MMOs. Suddenly, everything had to be like WoW and everything else died within days (how long did Auto Assault make it?). When I use the term MMO, I'm including stuff like Second Life - stuff which has no classes, no spells, no levels, and not really any combat (and a lot of giant blue dildos). Guild Wars 2 is a lot more like WoW than Eve or Sims Online. I think the MMO-scape is a much broader canvas, and while I like that GW2 has made a lot of really damn smart decisions, it doesn't reinvent MMOs, just the most popular subgenre.

SWG had amazing crafting and housing - still never done better - but SWG was a terrible game in many ways. I'm not looking for more SWG. I just like the ability to own a piece of the world and to make it uniquely my own. It's the same reason I love the character customization of Champions Online, or the player missions in City of Heroes or Star Trek Online. SWG had a really unique way of creating public spaces - bars, town halls, shops, and guild halls. Community centers created by the community. I like that kind of stuff, but I like bludgeoning trolls too. I don't think I should have to choose.

I agree with a lot of this, but I preferred Ultima Onlines crafting/housing system and communities that were built from it.

Man I am exhausted. Put like eighteen hours this weekend into working on this boat. Was really hoping to sit down and read about one more stress test. FIX THIS SHIT ARENANET.

Five more days.

All the stress tests in the world cannot prepare Arenanet for what is to come.
