3DS XL First Impressions/Previews

Ugh, I'm aware that the screen color gamut of the XL is warmer than that of the original 3DS, but I ran into the *same* problem I had with with my original 3DS where the *upper* screen is a degree or two warmer than the lower screen. It's not bad until you run a game or an app that combines the two screen into one big vertical display (some DS games, Activity log, browser -- check GAF's mobile site for example). Then when you start scrolling the same white background between the two displays, it becomes noticeable and kinda distracting. I know for a fact it didn't happen to *all* original 3DS, as I've checked some that didn't have it first hand, but if there are XL devices that don't share the problem I might take mine back because I'm *sick* of it.

Can anyone check their XLs?
There is a difference between my screens, but it's barely there. Top screen is a tiny bit more yellow, but the difference isn't that noticeable unless I want to notice it.

3DS XL speakers are garbage. The XL speakers seem to have around half the max volume of the 3DS when comparing them side-by-side. With headphones however, the XL does seem to have a higher max volume than the 3DS.

Yeah I was pretty sure that the XL's speakers are noticeably softer than the 3DS. Couldn't do a side by side comparison as I sold off my launch day 3DS a few weeks ago.

Mine is the same way. I did the transfer already, so I'm forced to wait a week to return it so I can do another transfer. I own numerous DS games that split the game across both screens and the background is white (Picross, Picross 3D, etc) and they look horrible when one screen is much warmer than the other.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll test some more and see how I feel about it between now and tomorrow.

Edit: Just going by the number of google results I came across, it seems to be more common this time around than with the original 3DS. I struggled to find people having the same problem before.

Just got a blue 3ds XL from BestBuy. Came with a case, but there was an oversight by Nintendo's part. 3ds games don't fit in the case. There is a little notch that sticks out on the game cartridges, which prevents them from fitting. DS games are fine. I'l have to get a razor blade and cut out the extra space so the games will fit.

Thats just because Best Buy was being cheap asses and giving DS Carrying cases. You get a good 3DS case and games will not be an issue

I was worried something was wrong with my XL's speakers too, until I changed the sound from default "surround" to "stereo".

The backing plate on my XL is a little flimsily-connected to the body of the back of the machine though, on the upper right right where the plate meets the wireless slider-tab. Once or twice today that backing has parted from the body while I was using the R shoulder button.

Before heading out to Walmart last night, I put up a listing for my original 3DS with 3 games (Lego Star Wars, Rayman, and Dead or Alive) for $140, sold it less than a day later today for $130.

Oh, and I'm not doing anything ever again with Game Stop... I went to get my preorder money back since I purchased the XL at Walmart last night, and the girl at the register told me that unfortunately since the system is now out, she cannot give me the money back or in-store credit, that the money can only be transferred towards other pre-orders... I was so annoyed. I did the same thing with my original 3DS, and this didn't happen. I guess their policy changed because she gave me the "empathetic" sorry-I-cannot-give-you-the-money-I-could-get-fired-for-this excuse. -__- Whatever, I ended up paying Pokemon Black 2 in full, and putting the remainder 13 bux towards Paper Mario. Are any of you familiar with this happening to you in the past?

Ha! Yep you're right. Didn't even catch that it says DS on the cover of the case. Still, not really upset. The case is nice for carrying the 3ds Xl and is normally $15. Plus, I was able to get double reward zone points by using my BestBuy card. So I'll get 10 dollars back for $25 total value. Better than nothing, especially since not many places outside of Fry's Electronics were offering significant deals.

so did anyone else find themselves with a sudden ambassador status like i did today?

For anyone who missed my earlier post, i bought an XL today and did a system transfer with my regular 3ds. The 3ds i had before was purchased post price cut. After trying out my games on this sexy new XL of mine i decide to mess around in the eshop and i see some NES games are avaialble to redownload as if ive bought them before (i never had), i go to check my download history and see an ambassador certificate and the 20 games!

Its unreal, im playing metroid fusion and i still cant believe it.

I hate to say this but she may have said that so she wouldn't get dinged for losing a pre-order. You should be allowed to get your money back at any time, especially for a product that hasn't even been purchased yet. I mean, realistically what would have happened if you had bought the system, turned around and returned it for a full refund? I canceled my pre-order for the purple 3DS the day it was released since I purchased it at another store and didn't have any issues getting the refund.

She is lying to you. You definitely could have gotten your preorder money back if you had the receipt, or store credit otherwise. She was most likely trying to up her own preorder numbers to meet her quota...

She definitely said that so she wouldnt lose one. You can get a full refund any time you want. Besides she cant get fired for it, it would just be -1 to her total count for the day.

Depends. Did you use trade-in credit to make the pre-order? You should get original payment method back.

System transfer complete, and everything seems to be in working order. No dead pixels or faulty buttons. Doesn't seem to have any screen tint either.

Changing the sound from Surround to Stereo does help with the volume issue, though it's still a tad low.

Now I just need to get a better SD card and I should be set for the foreseeable future. (Hopefully.)

Is the volume really that low? I can't see the issue if you an hear everything clearly at full volume. It's not like you want to crank the volume since the quality is dire anyway.

Do you remember when you bought it exactly? Maybe they just stopped them at a certain serial number to be safe and some systems outside the price window still are licensed on the servers or something.

It was straight-up money that came from my debit card, it wasn't from another trade or anything like that; money from my own pocket AND with the original receipt. She seemed really sincere and nice though, I can't believe she made me believe her. :( It does make sense though, if I had agreed to pay for the system and then returned it for a refund, I should have gotten the money for it, so it made no sense for them not to give me my money back right then and there. I didn't know these people had a quota of pre-orders either, which explains it even more. The pre-order wasn't made with her though, so would it count as her losing one anyways? Either way, I gave the bitch two pre-orders now. Good for her...

Edit for more logic: So, wait, if the reason I couldn't get my money back today was because she couldn't anymore because the system came out already... then I can get the money back now from the new two pre-orders I made... Why didn't I think of this in the store? I'm such an idiot. I'm getting my money back tomorrow. Chances are I will buy these games and probably from a Game Stop as well, but after this stupidity, I will never give them my money again, and I should be entitled to get my money back when I want it. Ridiculous.

Question:

I did the data transfer and it came out fine, but how do I upgrade from the 2GB SD card to the 4 GB SD card and keep all my data?

I'm kind of taken back by how warm the screens are. When I first booted the device I headed straight to brightness settings thinking it was set to 4 and power saving on, but found out it was 5/power saving off. I'm really digging the hardware, dimensions, weight, build and all, but why is there always a catch? And a pretty essential one too. Sigh.

The system when I click on a folder. I can play the games just fine on the 2 GB.

EDIT: Hmmm.... I tried it again, and now it seems to be working fine. Odd.

This is what I did:

Before the transferring of data from regular 3DS to the XL, I took out the 2GB SD card from the original 3DS and copied it to my PC. Then, I copied all of that data from my PC onto my new 4GB SD card that came with the XL. Then, I put the new 4GB SD card into my regular 3DS, and proceeded with the transfer. After the transfer was completed it asked me to move my card over to the XL, everything was perfect. Is this what you did?

I can't notice any change in color in my XL. Both screens appear to be the exact same with no yellow-tint.

If your screens are really warm with power saving off it may mean a defective unit. I compared the two systems side by side and my XL's screens only look slightly warmer. The difference was barely noticable for me. If I hadn't known about people getting really warm screens I likely would not have even noticed a difference. If you are really concern post a picture here and those that own the system should be able to tell you if it looks out of the ordinary.

No. Kinda wished I had though.

Everything's fine now. So no worries.

I know I will be bashed, but I wish they made a model with only the upper screen. Holding that thing and even a stylus feels awkward, I wish they'd offer a "Gameboy variant" of the 3ds.

Had some time to fiddle with it now.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Positives -

- Large screen makes it great to play older games in their native resolution.

- Much more comfortable in the hands. Especially with games like Kid Icarus. No more hand cramps!

- Normal one piece stylus without having to stretch it when you pull it out.

- You can actually see Rayman in the origins demo.

Negatives -

- Yellow tint. Not really noticable after awhile or in any game.

- Sound seems greatly diminished. Not a deal breaker as I tend to play with earbuds on.

- 3D effect seems diminished too. I thought the larger screen would actually help it.

Has anyone had a pre-order from Lockerz ship? I'm a little concerned as neither one of my orders have shown indication of processing. In fact, the Paypal status of my combined NSMB and 3DS XL order has changed to completed, but I have only been charged for NSMB. It has shipped out on its own...

That would be kind of neat if they could do that, but that's a terrible idea financially. They can't just split their user base like that.

yup it is. thought it was onlt my set at first- but it seems to be a common thing as the last few posters have mentioned. ive got a pair of ue triple fi 10s lying around so it is not that big of a deal to me. but i think.it is unacceptable tt the max volume seems to be so much lower than the original 3ds

Are these really hard to get in the U.S.? I just looked at amazon.com and noticed they're out - tough to find at retail, too?

Are you sure you received the right hard shell case? I got the light blue one and my 3ds games fit just fine.

Quick question for people transferring their info from the original 3ds (btw, loved the Pikmin reference)

My mii, and my ambassador certificate transferred over, but none of the game didnt. I redownloaded all from my Eshop account, and even copied the info from the 2gb card to the new 4gb card. But now, my saves for my virtual console games aren't there. What folder am I looking for? Are the saves Locke on the original 3ds? Thanks

I have another question, prior to buying one of these suckers.

I am the only person in the world who still uses wired internet.
How significantly is it going to impact my experience? Will I still be able to use the eShop from a friend's house, or some other WiFi spot? Does Streetpass require WiFi or is it used like Mingle Mode in The World Ends With You?

That was several questions. I apologise.

Streetpass does not require wireless internet. Only that the wireless mode is turned on. It will find other 3DS's nearby and collect their data as they will you. There are Nintendo specific wi-fi spots at Best Buy and certain McDonalds. Also, you can use the Nintendo store at any wi-fi spot.

Okay, as I put the 3DSXL (and myself) to bed, if I had one word to describe it, it would be "Comfortable". It's very comfortable in my hands (even playing Kid Icarus) and it's large screen is comfortable on the eyes.

My Paypal status still says Pending. I had planned to trade in my 3DS to gamestop after making transfer, while the $25 extra deal was going on. Now I'm concerned I won't get it by the end of the week.

Amazon doesn't sell Nintendo hardware directly anymore.

I had no problem copying the data on my 2GB card to the 4GB one. If your transfer went smoothly then you shouldn't have a problem either.

Oh, neat. All right, I'll give it a shot tomorrow when I have some free time.

Somebody needs to explain to me why I'm playing PilotWings more than any other game I bought for this thing.

I NEED ANSWERS

PILOTWINGS ANSWERS

Getting my XL has actually pushed me to track down another copy of Pilotwings Resort on Craigslist ($10, so I'm cool with it). My first original 3DS (yeah, I had to replace it) was stolen, along with the games I had at the time (Pilotwings, Ridge Racer, Super Monkey Ball, Zelda). I never bothered to replace the games because I didn't want to spend the extra money, but now that I have my XL I'm borrowing a friend's copy of Zelda and buying Pilotwings again off of Craigslist. It was always a great-looking game with nice 3D, so I think it'll be worth having again for my XL. These screens really make "old" 3DS games new again. Hell, even though I finished Ocarina while I had it originally, I'll probably play all the way through my friend's copy on my XL just because of those screens.

For those who owned the 3DS before XL came out, what game have you been most impressed with on the new model?

For me, Kid Icarus with full 3D effect has been mind-blowing. The sky sections are just jaw-droppingly beautiful and immersive.

Gotta agree with you there -- I'm going to say Kid Icarus has been the most impressive, along with Zelda. I can't speak for Theatrhythm, though, as I've not tried it yet; I refuse to play it until my HORI screen protectors arrive tomorrow from Amazon. :P

On a slightly unrelated note, it was rather comforting to read the Tales of the Abyss discussion a few pages ago. It seems I'm not alone in being really underwhelmed by the game. I got it when it came out because I thought it'd be nice to have a JRPG for the 3DS, and Tales fans seem to really worship Abyss, but I just couldn't get into it for the life of me... and it wasn't even because of that whiny dick Luke, either. I just found the world dull, the combat kind of repetitive, the music forgettable, and... I dunno, I just didn't really like it, even though I tried really hard to give it time to grow on me (I got about 15 hours into it). For what it's worth, I love JRPGs and have enjoyed past Tales games -- Symphonia and Vesperia, specifically -- so I had every reason to like Abyss. I just... didn't.

I very rarely sell games, but I'm seriously considering putting this one up for sale on Craigslist. I know I'll never play it again, and it'd be nice to recoup a bit of the cash I spent on my XL...

Are these really hard to get in the U.S.? I just looked at amazon.com and noticed they're out - tough to find at retail, too?

Amazon isn't selling Nintendo hardware (or at least handhelds anymore). There's apparently some bad blood between the two companies.

XLs do not seem to be hard to find at retail, unless you look at Fry's. Otherwise, you should be able to find one rather easily.

EDIT: Oops. Sorry for the double post, everyone.

I can't wait till Sunday! I'm glad Ninty went with the XL first instead of a stop-gap 3DSi or something.

Best part? I'm getting it for $80! Future Shop is having a trade 5, get it free promo with the XL, and a ton of the eligible games are available from a local trading site for $20 or less! So pumped!

Just thought I'd drop back in and say that this did, in fact, work! Although they wouldn't take two copies of the same game on different systems--in my case, UFC 3--but luckily I brought a couple extras from my own collection just in case. Oh, and like usual, the trade-in process took forever. I'm talking, like, 30 minutes. I don't blame the employees though; Future Shop has a dumb-as-hell trade-in system set up. It's so bad that I've contemplated emailing a higher-up about it. Honestly, it's pretty much unacceptable how tedious it is for both the customer and the employee.

Also, any issues with the top screen getting scratched? My original plan was to keep something in between them, but now I figure, screw it, if it's going to get scratched, I may as well do it while I can return it to FS. Honestly, I was kinda bummed when I saw how small the bumpers were...

Is this true? I haven't paid attention at all to the 3DS port, but I could have sworn I remember both Legendia and Abyss getting a lot of flak back when they released on PS2.
When Abyss was first released, people were really into it. It's reputation seems to have fallen a bit, but it's still generally well regarded.

I personally have Abyss ranked toward the lower end of the English Tales games. I still like it, but it's not one of my favorites.

Hmm they had the light blue case there, but I got a different one. I'll have to go back tomorrow/today and maybe I can exchange it. Glad you mentioned it.

Well, I can't say it's universally true for certain, but back when the 3DS version of Abyss was released, Tales fans here on NeoGAF and elsewhere on the Internet were freaking out like it was the most important, exciting release of the year. I didn't really pay any attention to Abyss when it first released on PS2, so I can't speak for how it was regarded then. I do remember Legendia not being very well-liked, however.

I just can't get into it. I tried, I really did. Oh well, these things happen sometimes. Strange thing is that I couldn't put Symphonia down back in the GameCube days, and I absolutely loved Vesperia. So... I don't know.

Argh, watching the
Pikmin
do their job and one of the 3ds (I'm not sure which one) lost connection... !

Mine "lost connection" as well during the last stage, but everything transferred over fine after the system reset and asked me to move the SD cards.

It was pretty well regarded back then aside from the load times which the 3DS version fixes.
People were just excited because Namco threw Tales fans a bone in English speaking territories.
