Finally pulled the trigger and I should be getting my 3DS XL on Sunday. I've waited for too long but it was worth the wait, I think.

Currently deciding what games to pick up and so far I have these in my cart:

Super Mario 3D Land
Resident Evil Revelations

I'm thinking two more and I should be good for a while.

Both are excellent games

I just went to Best Buy to find a case and nothing there seemed to be decent enough for me, so I went to GameStop. They had an old DSi XL case for $9.99 and it came up as $6.99 so I bought that one. It also came with a car charger that works with the 3DS XL as well. The 3DS XL fits perfectly in the case and holds three games, which also fit just fine. I'm OCD enough that it bugs me that it says DSi XL on the outside of the case, but it'll certainly do until an official decent 3DS XL case is released. Here are a few pictures of the case and the system...

Just played OOT for the better part of the last hour. The 3DS finally feels like a worthy successor to the DSlite(i)(XL). Loving it loving it loving it.

The RED one is BEAUTIFUL in real life. So happy with this choice.

It sure is. I had to replace my red with a blue. I'm happy the blue one is working so well, but it just lacks the Nintendo-y style of the Red and Black XL. I'll more than likely end up giving it to my wife whenever a limited edition XL comes out that I want.

I got the same case but in blue (kind of matches system) ^_^ was marked down to $6.99 for me

Edit: I see you got it for the same price.

Serves its purpose, since I couldn't find the chopper purse....

:(

Want a real, authentic 3DSXL case though

Yep, they're essentially forcing you to use 3D whether you want to or not. It's a great game, though. For me 3D is best when it enhances the experience instead of being a requirement. SML is so much better than this NSMB2 game I should never have bought.

Not gonna lie. Super Mario 3D Land was one of my most hyped games of last year because of who was developing it (I didn't like Galaxy, but Galaxy 2 turned out to be my favorite Mario game ever and my top 3 of this gen). But I was immensely disappointed by it. Not sure why, but the only part I really enjoyed about the game was the last boss fight
which is easily the best last boss fight in any Mario game
. And I 100%'d the game, too.

Maybe it's because of the dumbed down presentation and music, along with the incredibly easy and fairly lame level design. But I really didn't enjoy it at all.

Yet, New Super Mario Bros. 2, with all of its terrible presentation and music, I am enjoying far more than I did SM3L. And this is coming from someone who hated NSMBDS and Wii. I guess I just love the feeling of actually having exploration and verticality put back into my Mario games, even if it's not all that much when compared to something like Mario World. And I finally get a (mostly) proper flying Mario for the first time in God knows how long. <3

Kid Icarus was killing my left hand. I tried, guys. I tried for hours. The game was otherwise incredible so it's a damn shame I found that the controls were such a drawback for me. In fact I played more of it than I would have if the presentation weren't so good. But it was not meant to be.

Perhaps if I ever get a circle pad or if Nintendo ever actually releases a revision with another stick.

Use the stand! I only play with the stand, and it works great for me. I believe it would work even better with a XL (I haven't bought mine yet).

I don't know how to explain it, but if I press down on the nub, I can feel a bump under it. Whenever I press down on the nub and move it around, I feel a bump that takes extra energy to slide over it. I notice it when I drift in Mario Kart because it kind of screws me up. Is this normal?

Uh... maybe, but only if you're pressing down WAY HARD.

Don't do that. There's plenty of friction without squeezing the pad into the system.

Does anyone know if I trade in my 3DS and DS lite to Gamestop will the offers stack or would only the 3DS trade work? If both work I'll definitely upgrade for $60.

very sad to hear this, mate, but what can you do. If you can't, you can't

No photo could prepare me for how good blue looks in person. It's a thing of beauty! This console is designed just how I would have designed it personally. It's so nice.

Can't wait to go home and play it properly. Screens are so massive. Extremely happy that I have no differing colour temps between screens! It doesn't even look warm at all to be honest, and im sensitive to that sort of thing. Looks very nice. No dead pixels either.

My D-pad feels great to use but looks a bit loose. This normal?

Regardless I'm so happy with the product. +1 for Nintendo.
I might take some high quality pics tonight and fiddle with the white balance to match how it looks in person as close as possible.

So, I'm going to pick this up tomorrow. Red or Blue? And I know I'll get NSMB2, but Resident Evil, Super Mario 3d Land, or Mario Kart for my second game?

Super Mario 3D Land is the best handheld Mario ever and also the best 3DS game period.

However, if you don't want two Mario platformers as your initial 3DS games and feel you really need NSMB2 over Land, then Resident Evil is an excellent pick. Very impressive game, feels like Resident Evil 6 in your pocket.

So is it worth upgrading to an XL? They say the screen is 90% bigger than the normal 3DS.
It sounds stupid but i am kind of attached to my current 3DS =P

If you don't care about a bigger screen, there isn't a reason to imho
You lose some pixel density which, even to a non-graphic whore as myself, I couldn't help but notice

Super Mario 3D Land is 'the best game on the system', although I've put twice as many hours into Mario Kart which is also excellent. Resident Evil is an okay title, but I really didn't care for the linear story (don't believe the lies about 'the return to survival horror'), and the positives were mostly the Raid Mode outside of the story. Kid Icarus is another excellent title, with astounding writing and a load of content.

It's very much worth it. Many of us, myself included, were incredibly disappointed with the 3DS. Tiny screens. Questionable hardware design decisions. The list goes on. Most of which was fixed by the XL. The reviewers that state it will breathe new life into old games weren't lying.

My D-pad feels great to use but looks a bit loose. This normal?

My defective red unit looks loose and feels loose. It squeaks when used. My blue XL looks loose as you say, but is quite tight and does not squeak. I think that's the way it was designed. It's not as good as the Vita's exceptional Dpad, but it's still quite nice, and I've been giving it quite the workout with NSMB2.

Nintendo... kings of selling plastic things that aren't necessary

Not sure what you're referring to, but if it's the XL, it was very necessary to me.

How long did your 3DS XL take to charge initially?

Im still waiting, and its been 4hrs and 10mins. Sheesh!

The only device I've ever owned that takes as long to charge completely as the XL is the original 3DS.

And since we seem to have a lot of new people to the 3DS thanks to the XL and they're asking about games to get. Here's my own personal must-haves:

Super Mario 3D Land, Kid Icarus, Zen and Marvel Pinball via the e-shop, Pushmo via the e-shop, Mario Kart 7, Zelda Ocarina of Time, and Pilot Wings if you can get it for 10 bucks or less.

Guys, if you have spare speakers use them on the XL. I just tried my PC speakers with headphones and its so much louder. Not ground breaking, but leaps an bounds better what you get with just straight up headphones. I might just let it come out of the speakers, forget headphones.

Anyone wanna post their thoughts on Rhythm Thief? I tried the demo and thought it was quite fun. How's the full game? Demo looks great on the XL btw.

I was referring to the fact that people seem excited in buying the charging cradle for the XL... it is not actually necessary to charge your 3DS.

Oh, yeah. And for 20 bucks it's more of a joke. I bought a 99 cent USB charger and have just been using that. Cradles just take up space.

giantbomb QL gives a good idea. Seems like Professor Layton but you do rhythm minigames instead of puzzles.

Thank you, I'll watch that.

Used to set brightness Lv 4 for the original 3DS. On the XL, Lv 4 is kinda dark, is it normal?

On the OG I used 2 or 3. Now I use 4. When you increase screen size this much but dont raise the resolution, the pixels get spread apart and the blackness between pixels is more pronounced making for a darker image.

Don't mean to drive this into the territory of off-topic, but why wouldn't you consider Revelations a return to survival horror? Certainly doesn't compare to the old mansion or abandoned police precinct in size, but it definitely gives that vibe.

Aside from that, I have to agree, Super Mario 3DL trumps the other two for the original question.

Yeah, it's pretty much the same with the original 3DS. Get a cradle if you can, seriously, it truly helps: if you're not playing it, leave it in sleep mode on your cradle and you're good to go!

Because in the end, you're unloading thousands of rounds into enemies while processing from kill room to kill room. And there is no exploration in this game, as there were in the original set of games. It's far more linear, and only teases full exploration in the beginning. A ship setting is lovely, but the execution was not that great. The chapter break up does it no favours either, trying to maintain the sense of horror. I know for most people it's one of the must have 3DS games, but for me it was pretty underwhelming.
