3DS XL First Impressions/Previews

I've been playing on my XL for like 8 hours today and I've come to the conclusion that the 3DS XL is seriously the hest handheld I've ever used.

Yeah. I mean, I love my Vita but the 3DS XL is such a wonderful machine. If only Vita wasn't dying I'd be in ecstasy over this handheld gen.

That's because ALL 3DS XL have a warmer tone compared to the 3DS. Nintendo has said so themselves. It's not a defect and you're not going to find any 3DS XL in the world that has a cooler tone than the 3DS

Seriously man? Where did Nintendo say it? This has caused me so much stress trying to work it out :/

3DS XL is definitely the best Nintendo handheld I've ever had. (never had DSi XL)

Just wish I had it in Silver. Blue is gorgeous (in the right lighting), but it just doesn't look that great to me with the black. :(

I like this 3DS XL quite a bit so far too, but I'd be inclined to say that I still think the Vita is the best handheld I've ever used. Maybe it's because I haven't played many games on it yet. I only own a copy of Kingdom Hearts 3D DDD that I've been afraid to boot up just yet, and I've only had a chance to play Theatrhythm as far as actual 3DS games go.

What is it that makes you so impressed with it? Especially you Billiechu since you have a Vita to compare it to.

Yeah I kinda wish it was blue on the inside too.

hello ,i just got my RED 3DSXL and it look very nice.
but i want to ask one question,
does the back cover can be opened a bit so easily?
i ask this because when i tried to pop the SD card from the transfer process, suddenly the back cover can be opened,
i see that the back cover only covered by 2 screw. sorry for my bad english ,it is not my main language :)

Hunh. You're right.it does feel like you could almost open it and it only has two screws this time instead of 4. That's an odd and unsecure design choice.

so now that I've completed the transfer... I need to copy the files manually via a computer to keep the bigger memory card?

Drag the files from the current SD card onto your desktop then drag them into a bigger SD card.

the current card is the one from my old 3DS, which the transfer forced me to switch to my XL. And the XL card is the one I want... should I still do it?

Try inserting the old SD card into the XL and see if it's working. If yes just use a PC to transfer the contents from the old SD card to the bigger XL SD card.

I love my Vita and all, but the buttons and d-pad are too close to the analog sticks. It really bothers me when playing PSP games. That and the lack of support make it worse imo. Also, I can't have the web browser open when I'm playing a game. I like having the ability to open up a guide and switch back easily to my paused game. It was such a hassle when I was playing Corpse Party on my Vita.

You mean after you transferred the contents from the old SD card to the XL one, the XL card is unable to work with your XL?

Copied the contents from the 2gb card (old) to the 4gb one (XL).

Once I swapped them, turn on the 3DS... all the apps are not there. (not even swapnote)

No photo could prepare me for how good blue looks in person. It's a thing of beauty! This console is designed just how I would have designed it personally. It's so nice.

Can't wait to go home and play it properly. Screens are so massive. Extremely happy that I have no differing colour temps between screens! It doesn't even look warm at all to be honest, and im sensitive to that sort of thing. Looks very nice. No dead pixels either.

My D-pad feels great to use but looks a bit loose. This normal?

Regardless I'm so happy with the product. +1 for Nintendo.

This was my exact experience today. I love the system so much and can't see myself going back to the OG 3DS now. I played KH 3D for 5 or so hours on it tonight and it's just amazing. The sweet spot for the 3D does seem small, but the effect is great and much better for me than it was on the OG 3DS (which I barely ever even used).

System transfer went perfectly!

Went through all my games to see how they looked. They all looked amazing, even ToS which was already an aliased mess on the original

The XL improves the experience for all of them.

Man, OoT looks glorious. I booted up my Master Quest file and I was in Jabu-Jabu, and it just looked great. Definitely inspired me to finish off the MQ run.
Mario Kart and KI in particular looked fantastic also, but as I said, they all did.

Packing up my original 3DS now to ship it off to somebody who bought it off me on eBay. Sad to see it go, as honestly I liked that system + design, despite it's flaws. There's a certain charm to it. But the XL is such a great replacement that I'm fine to let it go.

The XL is pretty damn sweet, it really is an improvement in almost every area. Mario Kart is mindblowing on dat screen. Only problem is I don't have a case for it and I can't find anywhere to buy one :(

Just traded in my old blue, and got RED with Kingdom Hearts for AU $150.

I compared red and silver in store and red was just so damn bold and sexy.

Wish I could have seen blue but I like that I have a red XL to go with my red mushroom OG.

Does anyone else think the viewing angle for 3D is a little more sensitive with the XL? I feel like when I move the XL slightly my vision goes blurry easier than with my 3DS. Maybe it is just me.

I've only played MK7 and Kid Icarus on mine so far, but I noticed no 'sweet spot' difference for Mario Kart but with Kid Icarus I was moving the system around a lot more than with the standard 3DS so I had to turn off the 3D.

Got my silver one. It's nice, more like a gunmetal.

SO I bought SFIV 3d second hand for my new 3ds xl.

As soon as I plugged it in, it wrote something into extra data (took 1 block, I believe), I remember confirming something.

Then in the game I found the reset all data. So I deleted teh extra data and reset.

But that extra data has never come back. What was it and how would I get it back? Was it something important?

I imagine it was streetpass challengers. I think the record for those writes to the SD card and not to the game itself.

For me i have to turn 3d down to the lowest setting. Its still on but its not overkill and it compliments most games well for my tastes. Basically i drop it down right before the "stop" on the 3d slider.

I read somewhere it was spot pass data, and the only way to recover that is to format the system. :/

What spotpass data did Street Fighter IV have? I'm not sure there was anything of note to worry about.

I lost out on my DoA costumes in my transfer from the 3DS to the XL which sucked.

I also find it slightly narrower. Or perhaps it's only because the sweet spot is different and I have to relearn to position myself correctly for the XL.

Either way, I've never really had a problem keeping my head and system aligned while playing, so dat slider stays cranked up to max :O

My HORI screen protectors came in today. Normally I'm fuck awful at applying them and get air bubbles/dust/etc., but I've found screen protectors necessary in the past, and as a heavy Theatrhythm player, there was no way I was going to play it on my XL before getting my touch screen some protection.

Anyway, I have to hand it to HORI -- these are fantastic screen protectors and they seriously could not make applying them any easier. The instructions are clear and the installation process is pretty foolproof, and this is coming from someone who, like I said, has been terrible at applying them in the past. For the first time ever, my top screen's protector has no dust trapped underneath and no air bubbles. The touch screen's protector does have a scant couple tiny bubbles, but no dust.

I'm very pleased. If you're on the fence about the HORI protectors, I recommend them wholeheartedly.

Thanks for this! My HORI screen protectors are coming in on Saturday. :3

Ok after reading all the posts from folks who insist there's a screen gap I might be willing to upgrade sometime in the next few months. My only other concern now is how well does the XL fit into a pocket? My OG fits very nicely but I'm guessing the XL is much tighter? Or does it have a thin enough chassis that it's not a very noticeable difference?

I'm happy with my XL except for one thing: I feel like the exterior is more prone to scratching than my cosmo black 3DS.

I put my blue Xl in my bag in the exact same spot I used to put my cosmo black. I've been carrying it in that same spot since the 3DS launched, so we're talking around 18 months here. It is 100% SCRATCH FREE.

Day 2 of carrying my XL with me on my commute and I already have a very noticable scratch, apparently my macbook pro's magsafe charger scratched it. I didn't think this would be an issue because it's never scratched my old 3DS before.

It's an ugly scratch too, like you can see black underneath the blue. This is not a deep scratch either: i'm talking like the depth level comparable to a human hair.

Be careful or this could happen to you! It's bad enough to where I'm considering seeking out some matching paint to try and hide it. (sorry, cellphone pic)

Really enjoying NSMB2 -- haven't opened Mario 3D Land yet, thinking about returning it since I'm so busy these days.

I can't use the 3D on max. Either half way or off. I'll spend more time trying to keep my head in the sweet spot and 3ds still than enjoying the game.

Fantastic system...but...

They really couldn't be bothered to paint the Select, Home, and Start text in the buttons so they'd stand out?

Trying to play KH 3D with it set to max 3D, but am seeing doubling of the image alot. Is there a sweet spot I'm missing? It's fine on the home screen. Does lighting matter?
