Windows 8 Release Preview

So I know this probably won't have that much appeal to this thread where the majority seems firmly in the pro-metro camp, but I just installed classic shell (http://classicshell.sourceforge.net/) and it pretty much fixes all my complains with Windows 8.

It restores the Windows 7 start menu (or any other style you prefer) plus it gets rid the metro opening splash after you login.

It basically turns Windows 8 into 7 with neater skin and better file copy, but I could actually see myself use this if I was ever forced to switch to Windows 8 (like if I have to buy a laptop in the next couple of years).

And I also disabled hot corners. They were a terrible idea in Gnome 3, and they sucked in Windows as well. Your mileage might vary, but it's very customizable.

From the screenshots of the Samsung implement above, I can't believe they didn't just ship with that instead of making their own weird implementation.

Is there a chart or quick reference I can use to figure out screen resolution by the number of stacked tiles or does PPI also factor into scaling of tiles?

What I want to do is take a picture like below and determine if its a 768p, 900p, 1080p, etc...

Assuming PPI isn't a factor, I suspect this of being 900p since it's 4 tiles high.
Comparatively:
768 = 3 tiles
1080 = 5 tiles?
1200 = 6 tiles?

Pretty sure PPI is a factor in number of rows of tiles because all the tablets that I see that are 768 have 3 rows, but I'm currently using a laptop on 768 that has 4 rows.
 
If somebody could answer real quick, it would be great. I am now downloading Windows 8 Professional from Dreamspark (a site for CIT students to download various Microsoft software). A week ago when I saw the Windows 8 listing, it just said "Consumer Preview". Now it says "Windows 8 Professional", with no mention of RC or Media Preview or anything. Surely it's not the retail version, right? And would it be fine for me to use on my laptop as my main OS (my laptop is not my main computer, btw)?

This is correct. It essentially goes based on screen size.

~10 inches - 3 rows of tiles
~11-13 inches - 4 rows of tiles

and so on. My 24" monitor gives me 6 rows of tiles.

Windows 8 Pro on Dreamspark is final RTM build, no worries about in installing it, go right ahead.

The start button is a touch "button"in this one? Looks kinda nice :P

How does Clover Field compares to Tegra 3 in battery life and performance (Both cpu and gpu wise)?

Here's something I'd REALLY like to know. Why does MS Partner Portal give you windows 8 as an IMG file? Who the fuck uses .img files? Why not let me download as a ISO, or even better, as an executable that will ask to create a boot USB/DVD. Currently in 7, all it does is ask me to burn it to a DVD, which fails because I don't use optical drives and never will unless forced to again.

I have to use WinRAR to open it and extract everything....seriously MS...wtf?
This is the final build, not release preview or anything like that.

One last question, does the dseo software work with win8 64-bit? I have a 4x20 dot matrix LCD in front of my HTPC case that doesn't have signed drivers, and I damn won't hit F8 every time I boot it.

I recommend WinCDEmu for all your mounting needs: http://wincdemu.sysprogs.org/
It integrates seamlessly with windows and makes it similar to OSX where you just double click images/isos to mount them and right-click them to eject them.

I was able to extract everything into a folder with winrar and ran setup. I am afraid that it will install over my OS, which I do not want. How do I make a simple bootable USB like I did with win7 from it? The Win7 USB/DVD tool won't make a bootable USB from a stupid IMG file, it only accepts ISO. Still don't get WHY they made an .img file where win7 and everything else is an ISO.

I assume they give you a key, so go download a iso from piratebay or something and use the key with that.

It's because I downloaded the N version which doesn't include WMP, which is great because I never use it anyways, VLC/WMP classic for me. There is the non-N version on the portal and that one comes as an ISO, so I can just download that, no need to hit the torrents.

Still would really like to make a N version into a USB bootable though, don't feel like downloading another 3.3 GB's.

I'm at the screen where I enter the key (I have not yet), will it ever give me an option to make a bootable USB at this point, or is my time better spent trying to convert an .img to .iso?

You would still do well in downloading a complete version, I installed the first RTM N version and had a lot of problems with missing components of the wmp so apps like xbox, music, video didn't work and had no sound in live messenger. Complete stupidity from MS in that one version

I have WMP disabled and the xbox apps work?
 
I suspect atom will be quite a bit better then anything arm can put out... unless they had to cut back a lot to get that kind of battery life.

I have no need to use any of those apps, or in fact any metro apps at all, and I don't use live messenger either. I just want to give this better version of win7 a shot with the classic start menu added.

However given the difficulties I'm having, I'll just leave it overnight to download the ISO and purge this worthless IMG file from my system.

With the kind of battery the OEMs are claiming (8-10hrs) I wonder why have the RT version of windows when with Atom you could have a full OS at those cheap prices.
 
Atom tablets make the most sense for me, since I already have a gaming desktop from before. I don't need the kind of power Ivy Bridge CPUs give, but I certainly want access to the classic Windows ecosystem when I dock my tablet to the keyboard and mouse.
 
Itll be interesting to see the power of the new atoms though. If AMD can get decent battery life + their graphics prowess... they could be the tegra of windows tablets!

There'll be a core i3 and a core i5 version which will sell for 1200 and 1400 Euros respecitvely.

I didn't really expect any less. They are full Ultrabooks with 128gb SSD and full HD IPS display. The price is in line with e.g. the Asus Zenbook prime.
 
So with Microsoft shoe-horning all these PCs into the "tablet" space, what percent market share do you think they will have this holiday? 30%? More?
 
I was hoping we'd see a lot more new Windows 8 notebooks at IFA. It seems to me notebooks haven't really been a focus in the press conferences. Mostly uninspired Android/Windows 8 tablets and a couple of Android phones.

Right now I doubt I can make an Intel tablet my main computing device. I'd like core i5/i7, 8gb ram, and a real docking station for display, mouse, keyboard. A keyboard dock isn't enough.

That Duo 12 looks atrocious, not to mention the design doesn't make sense from a usability point... You have the tablet detached from the dock at all times, but it doesn't connect to it so the dock can extend it's battery life. So you end up with a mega heavy tablet that's always docked and have a not very good battery life XD
