I think they're actually being given away at Benaroya Hall, which is about 7 blocks southwest of the PAX convention center.

I'm definitely willing to recompense with PayPal, tix, etc, for your troubles.

So I haven't played Magic in about 15 years give or take, but just picked up the 2012 beginner set for my g/f and me. I'm curious what the best avenue for someone like us who will likely never play much outside of with each other, to get some more cards to play around with and not spend much in doing so, seeing as we aren't looking to be heavily invested. ebay perhaps? thoughts?

The very best thing you can do for someone in a situation like this is purchase a duel deck.

For 19.95 MSRP you get two 60-card decks that were made specifically for an environment to play against one another. You don't have to worry about building a deck or balancing spells, creatures and lands. They are ready to go right out of the box and make for quite fun matches usually. Of course, if you do ever wish to take the next leap these cards are playable in any format where they are legal and you can also take them out and put in other decks.

The most recent duel deck is Venser versus Koth and should be found at your local gaming store or even big box retailers like Wal-mart, Target, Barnes and Nobles, etc. Don't pay more than 20 bucks for this one since it's still readily available. The older ones in this series can go for a high price so just watch for that. Also you get to play with the new card type called Planeswalker, which are permanents that offer 3 different abilities that you can activate on your turn and are pretty powerful.

This is what the box looks like:

I would wait till Tuesday and buy the Izzet vs Golgari Duel Deck that is coming out then. It looks way more interesting than Venser vs Koth.

2-2 finish. My two wins were against someone who hadn't played since Ice Age (but she was nice) and a guy who couldn't draw anything. My losses were against Infect which was way too fast and Bant Pod, which we had a great game for the first, and I mull'd to 4 in the 2nd and ran into a Thalia. Them's the breaks!

There were like 5 people playing infect though. Why didn't I splash green for Melira haha

Infect cracks me up. It's so damn swingy. Either it rocks your face or makes you giggle as they slap down little nothing threats.

I totally forgot about Izzet vs Golgari coming out next week. Yes, that one will probably be more fun since it's Black/Green vs Red/Blue and there are actually cards from the upcoming set Return to Ravinca coming out.

Still the Venser versus Koth is a decent buy though since you get two Planeswalkers but yeah if you could only get one go with Izzet vs Golgari next week.

Here's a picture of it, releasing September 7th for 19.99.

Izzet v Golgari is also is a ridiculous value-steal for a Duel Deck, assuming you can get it at MSRP. 2 Foil promos (one of which retails for about 7-8 bux normally), a Life from the Loam (14) an Isochron Scepeter (6-ish) and an Eternal Witness (4-5) is just awesome. I'm getting 4 cause I have zero of those 3 Modern staples.

Yeah they really made it worth our while, I'd buy one if international shipping for duel deck boxes wasn't so expensive.

EDIT: well I guess NOW the stubborn people will accept shocklands are on RtR.

What in the almighty fuck is this fuckery?

Welp, at least it's ultimate doesn't end the game....

I really thought we were past the point of insanely broken Planeswalkers. This is probably the 3rd best one ever, behind Big Jace and Elspeth

At least the FoF-lite isn't his +1, thank god

EDIT: On reflection I'm not sure how well his +1 will scale over the turns needed to gt him to 8. Will be interesting to see him in play

Looks like Zendikar power creep is BACK WITH A VENGEANCE.

Okay, double post but

Chromatic Lantern. 3 colorless rare artifact. Makes all your lands able to create any color mana and taps for any color mana itself.

Dreadbore. BR sorcery. Destroy target creature or Planeswalker.

THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING

Whoa. Dreadbore is crazy powerful but not really exciting, but that lantern....really? Three mana for unlimited fixing as a static ability?

Second ability is a mini Fact or Fiction, one of the most powerful (and not banned) blue cards in magic history.

But you can do it twice and then he dies if he's fully guarded. It's really good but to make it sound like he's second best and incredibly broken seems extreme. Maybe he will be but it just seems like an overreaction.

But he can't defend himself or deal with opponent creatures in any meaningful way. So he can't take over the game by himself.
He can defend himself in a way with his +1.

You're in a much better position to chump block if their 0/1 goes up against your 1/1.

Yeah it is an overreaction on my part but really, FoF on a stick?

Who wouldn't lose their heads at that?

New Jace is very good. He's especially good w/ Tamiyo, because combined their +1s present a very nasty wall for the opponent's creatures to get through.

Yeah, he is pretty sick, but I don't think he's going to be entirely game breaking.

In a world without fetchlands, that FoF is way more powerful than a brainstorm effect.

Also, his +1 is going to do a good job protecting him. We don't really know what the new standard is going to be like (because Delver and Pod are dead with the rotation), but him coming down on turn 4, jumping to 5 loyalty, and turning your two 2 powered creatures into 1 powered creatures is going to do lots of work.

He can't actually end the game like JTMS, but considering how they have spent the last year neutering Planeswalkers from their previous power levels, this is a big swing back in power.

I think it's extremely interesting since most of us thought tokens would rise up again after mirrodin rotates and this is like super strong token hate.

I dunno, I feel like his ultimate is basically a 3 turn clock.

In multiplayer, sure. But in standard? What does it do against Zombies? or RDW?

EDIT: Nevermind, I read it as "Each Opponent". Ultimate is actually insane. Go get Emrakul in Modern?

I love my Venser deck. That Emblem is so great. Once it's out I just bounce the same two "When this card enters the battlefield, return target permanent you control to your hand" cards over and over till I run out of mana and watch the opponent's side of the field evaporate.

More spoilers are up at MTGSalvation

Azorius Charm UW: Creatures you control gain lifelink until end of turn; or draw a card; or put target attacking or blocking creature on top of its owner's library.

Carnival Hellsteed 4BR: Creature - Nightmare Horse. First Strike, Haste, Unleash (5/4)

Corpsejack Menace 2BG: Creature - Fungus. If one or more +1/+1 counters would be placed on a creature you control, twice that many +1/+1 counters are placed instead. (4/4)

Dreadbore. BR sorcery. Destroy target creature or Planeswalker.

Well, it's not quite Terminate. But I guess I'll put a playset in my Grixis control deck.
