31 Days of Horror 2 |OT| The October Movie Marathon

This thread is posted early to allow people time to begin hording movies if they wish to participate - please do not begin your marathon listing until Oct 1st.


What is 31 Days of Horror?

With an idea blatantly ripped off from the Arrow in the Head podcast, 31 Days of Horror is a torturous, self-inflected horror movie marathon in honor of Halloween.

The goal of the marathon is to watch and share your thoughts on as many horror movies as you can throughout the month of October - hopefully (though optional this year) doing a movie a day and reaching a full 31 movies by October 31st.


The MANDATORY Rules

- Beginning October 1st, watch as many full-length horror movies as you can until October 31st. Please only include movies watched or re-watched during this period.
- After each viewing, you must post which movie(s) you've watched and your thoughts on them. Be as brief or as detailed in your review as you'd like. Please number your movies to keep a running tally of your progress.

- Short films may be included - but should be 45 minutes in length or longer.
- Standard, continuous TV series (The Walking Dead, American Horror Story, Halloween themed episodes of sitcoms, etc) do not count - please do not include them in your tally.
- TV series consisting of stand alone short films (such as Masters of Horror) are allowed.
- No cheating, Santa will know.


The OPTIONAL Challenges

- Do 1 movie every day, so you end up with a full 31 films as your final total. This year the 31 films total is fully optional. Only attempt this if you have a lot of free time and/or are completely insane and self-abusive.
- As the purpose of this is to expose yourself to new horror films, attempt to watch as many movies you haven't seen as possible. This definitely helps keep things fresh and makes going for the full 31 movies a lot more interesting than slogging though the same movies you do every year.
- Adding poster images, screenshots, quotes, trailer links, etc to your opinions are not mandatory, but will help bring attention to your reviews of each film - especially useful if you feel it's a film worth recommending to other participants.

re-reading through last year's thread is getting me excited. so many great films for me to watch just looking through a few pages.

on that note, i'm looking forward to checking out a lot more foreign horror this year. many of my favorite horror discoveries over the past year have been non-American films. they tend to lack the overpolish and bombast of hollywood horror.
 
I try doing this in last year's thread. I think I've seen 13-16 movies til I tapped out. I'll try to squeeze some movies in this year while juggling school work and what not.
 
I'm totally down this year.

Now that I've graduated, I have a lot more time on my hands towards the tail end of my days. And Fall is perfect movie watching weather!

Can't wait to utilize my projector for some horror movie goodness.

Yeah, I'm gonna go though last year's thread as well and see what movies catch my eye that I can watch this year. Problem with me is I watch tons of horror movies all year so I've already gone though a lot of great stuff already. I'm going to try to mostly watch movies I haven't seen before, so the majority of stuff I have right now is $5 bin crap from Walmart and old discs I've had sitting on a shelf for ages, including some stuff I was going to watch last year but never got to.

My list is going to be... interesting this year.

At least there's some new release discs I'm looking forward to.
 
Really hoping I can make the full 31 this year. Think I made it to 29 last year...

PS: I really recommend that you don't watch too many films that, while fun, are still regarded as mediocare at best, as to not burn yourself out. Made the mistake last year of watching all the phantasm films in order and it nearly did me in lol

Also, don't forget to check out James Rolfe's Halloween Cinemasacre shorts!
 
Might be a good idea to list horror films available on streaming services like netflix. It can be difficult to find enough movies in time.

It so happens that I will do a horror movie weekend marathon with a friend of mine the first weekend of october. Last year we managed to do 11 movies total though I had to wake her op a couple of times. I'm in!
 
I can't find anything on AMC's website about whether or not they are continuing their horror movie lineup for October ;(

Man, 2007 was such a great year for them.
 
I'm in again this year. I'm actually itching to watch horror movies right now but know my yearly marathon is right around the corner!

Nothing like a F13 marathon to suck the life out of you. I love Jason and all, but watching those movies in quick succession is a chore.
 
I'm planning on running through most of the Halloween movies this year with HII and HIII hitting Blu-ray next week. I don't have 4-5 yet, but may just skip from III to H20.

There's lots of horror movies that just came out (TCM2/Killer Klowns) and coming up (Terror Train/The Funhouse) on BD that I'm looking forward to watching this year. I also want to watch Trick r' Treat again this year as I skipped that one last year.

Not sure if I can hit 31 for the month given my schedule, but will give it the ol' college try.
 
I'll be monitoring this thread for recommendations. I didn't make 31 last year but I did watch over 20. I'm just running out of new ones to watch.

Going to see in theaters Sinister and Paranormal Activity 4. Might see if I can catch V/H/S as well but might just VOD it.
 
Oh, man. Is it time for this already!?! Time to prepare the list...

Has TMC put their October schedule up yet? (I say like I don't have a Google bar three inches from this text box)

Haha. Are the Phantasm movies that bad? I've only seen (I believe) the first when I was a kid and was thinking about seeing if I could track down the entire series. I usually enjoy going though entire franchises to see how they've evolved (or devolved) over the years. I did the entire Halloween franchise (with the exception of H1 since I had re-watched it last October and H3 since I don't own it) earlier in the year. Even when some of the sequels are poor, it's fun to see where they take things and what they tend to ignore (like H20 ignoring everything after H2).

I wish I could follow your attempting to watch movies that are regarded as at least mediocre advice, but that $5 bin at Walmart got me and I picked up a lot of multi-movie sets with sure to be awful straight to DVD crap I've got to watch. It should be fun to trash some of them here at least. How could I pass up movies with titles like "Bachelor Party in the Bungalow of the Damned", "Evil Bong" and "976-Evil II"? Was there even a 976-Evil 1?

I got the H4 and H5 Blu-rays and am debating if I should watch them for this or not since I've already watched them earlier this year on DVD. I'm also going to pick up H2 and H3 and will be watching H3 for sure since it's been a few years since I've seen that.

I just got Killer Klowns and TCM2 yesterday and am itching to watch them. Saving them for October though. I haven't seen Killer Klowns since it was first on cable back when I was a kid.
 
My wife and I made our list up last weekend. Since we actively seek out horror films all year, we usually take October to sit down and watch the classics (and guilty pleasures) in our collection. So, we're breaking the rules here a bit, but I'm looking forward to seeing the reviews and reactions in this thread.

Initially, we just went through the rows and pulled out the films we'd like to watch. This resulted in 61 movies, which we eventually whittled the total down to 50. We're going to have to start next weekend to make it by Halloween. Yikes.

Oh, and "976-Evil II" is awesomely awful.

Yeah, that'd be awesome. I don't own any horror movies, so any sort of list of good, free steaming horror movies would make the whole month easier for me.

Just recently realized October was coming... gah, so exciting!

I know it was asked in jest, but until recently 976-Evil 1 was pretty hard to come across. I still don't think it got a DVD release, but I was able to buy it off of Amazon's digital movie service about a year ago. Its got pacing issues, but its got Evil Ed from Fright Night, and that guy is awesome.
 
I'm up for this, I had a great time last year and there's a whole bunch of movies I need to watch. I've been putting off Martyrs and Funny Games and the like because I know I'm going to be uncomfortable with them, but this time I'll face my fears!

Watch the original Funny Games. I find it more uncomfortable (engrossing) because the actors are not familiar looking

Yeah, the Tall Man has some choice moments as a character, but the series is just mostly a damn chore. The last film in particular is paaaaiiinful
I say avoid

I'd say there is more tha enough genuinely good flicks out there though. I just need to prepare better this time around =)

Looks like it did have a DVD (which costs a whole $5 everywhere I looked) and Crackle has it up for free viewing. Should I add it to my list?
 
I just bought the full collection of Tales From the Crypt. Bought it from a friend of mine for $30 total.

Can't wait to dig in, but I'll try and participate as much for the rest of the movie list. I'll get mine together.
 
The selection on Netflix really has gone to shit when it comes to horror, the selection keeps dwindling while we keep getting more recent dtv garbage. Seems like a new horrible zombie flick comes out each week.

There's loads of high profile horror films I've never seen, like Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, the Exorcist, and Halloween, so this'll be the perfect excuse to watch all of those.

One of the 8 movie packs I got out of the cheapo Walmart bin has Slaughter High (same one with 967-Evil 2), I'm really looking forward to that one, heard it was great. It also has The Unholy which I've also heard is good, and Chopping Mall, which I've already seen but enjoyed. $5 well spent on that one, me thinks.

Will do, thanks for the advice. I don't recall ever seeing Fright Night either, but I missed out on the blu-ray for that (stupidly overpriced and VERY limited) and I always wanted to see it. I might have to bite the bullet and just buy the DVD. I loves me some 80s cheese.

I'm pretty happy with the list and look forward to watching these films next month.

I'd say add REC 2 and 3 to that list. 3 is on VOD.

Blade films are considered action-horror right?

Need to pick up the Blurays of 1 and 2
