Dark Souls internal rendering resolution fix (DSfix)

Ok, so I just built my new rig, and had to reinstall. What would be causing the "Executable has stopped working" error again?

and how can I correct it?

That would just be the generic message you see when the game crashes to the desktop. CTD seem to mostly be caused by external programs like MSI Afterburner OSD.

those aren't actual rips from the ps3 version are they?

doubt it. as it says ls and rs.

i'm pretty sure the actual ps3 version says l3 and r3. but i can't remember for sure.

Trying to figure out why it won't override the texture I modded. Trying to do
Chester's Trousers to get rid of the stupid crossbow bolts via alpha like I did in Skyrim, or at least make them a silver and not pimp gold. But it's not taking it. I wonder if that's the NPC version of it and that's why it's not fixing it.

just read the notes for the latest version, Durante you are now an official mod-god. your work has taken one of the worst pc versions of a game in history, fixed the major problems with it and if that wasn't enough paved the way for further modding.

amazing work, as a fellow code-whisperer I am humbled.

I know it's been mentioned before in this thread, but the mouse fix by lebbers on the Steam Forums works wonders. Not only does it improve the mouse input by a great deal, the latest version now disables mouse movement when locked onto a target (no more accidentally switching between targets!). In response, the mouse wheel now cycles between targets.

With this and durante's fix, Dark Souls on the PC has shed its limitations to become the definitive Dark Souls experience.

Yeah, can't get the texture override to work on armor, which sucks. :(

I know the texture override itself is working because Durante's example logo shows up. But the armor I'm modifying is not changing. I even checked the NPC who wears it to see if it was an enemy/NPC version of the same texture and it did nothing there.

I'm getting this strange issue where my FPS just drops when I'm typing a message over GFWL to someone in-game.

Making matters worse is the game boots you back to the menu screen and disables online till you restart it because it detects an FPS drop.

Needless to say, that is pretty annoying. Anyone having that issue?

If you're playing through Steam and using the 360 pad's guide button, Big Picture Mode might be starting up in the background and causing slowdown. That probably wouldn't cause slowdown only when typing though.

i play with steam offline and the overlay turned off. it used to give me problems before, but i keep it off anyway. no reason to have it eat up any resources.

I use a PS3 pad through MotioninJoy (where the PS button acts as the guide button).

I also think this is a more recent development, but it's hard to tell because I kept previous GFWL messages in Dark Souls like one word long. This time around I tried typing something a bit longer and noticed my FPS just dropping to like 5. Didn't really care much till it booted me. Had forgotten it would do that. :P

Guess people will have to make do with succinct responses!

For anyone who has stuttering problems that occours in two-three seconds intervalls or 5-10 seconds try this.

1. Go to your Steam Library
2. Right click on Dark souls
3. Click Properties
4. Uncheck Enable Steam Community Ingame
5. Launch game and enjoy!

The stuttering is now gone for me after I did this and it seems im getting better FPS (can be maybe Durantes v1.2 that is bether optimized).

Read afterwards on the internet that one other person had the same problem with DS (why didnt I search "DS stuttering" before I started testing alot of stuff to fix it). He had every ten seconds stuttering. He checked his CPU and also there every ten seconds steam was hogging 40% of his CPU. After he unchecked steam community ingame it was gone.

For me I can now have the following with only slowdowns at firelinks and no stuttering what so ever.

Res 3840*2160
SMAA Ultra
DOF 1080
DOF Blur 1
SSAO 2

im going to rip it then..once this iso downloads

heres the old you lit the bonfire thing. i don't know the hash yet.

It's 8be12045.png. And there are no additional changes that need to be made (Unlike the "YOU DEFEATED" text) you can just save that image under that file name.

super! I am still sometime away from getting the ps3 button prompts, but would like to do them properly too. I didn't do anything different when extracting the texture. What was wrong with it before? size? or actual compression/transparency

I'm not sure if this an actual dump from the game, but it looks pretty good to me:

Wow the game is actually really playable with kb/m with this fix. From should take note and at the very least implement something like this mouse fix in a patch or something.

Is anybody else having a problem with fraps not recording movies any more? I can still display the framerate and even if I use the same button to start/stop movies, nothing is happening.

I'm using the latest version btw-1.2

[edit] Fixed the problem. I'm a dumbass and didn't try skipintro 0 before posting, so just a heads up for anybody else changing this setting to 0 stopped fraps from recording.

Program is f'kn awesome though mate, you just went all the way up to 11 ....

So...its playable now with Mouse and KB? Was still toying with picking up a 360 wired pad but might just get the game and use the KB and Mouse.

The longer I take to pick the closer I get to Borderlands 2. :D

I'd wait for a mod that adds keyboard prompts but what I've tried so far is perfectly playable.

Hrmmmm....

I don't buy many games, since I tend to only pick the ones I know I will play but I am utterly torn between getting PC version or just getting 360 version and see how I get on.

Why would you ever get the 360 version if you have a decent PC? Honest question.

Well the main factor would be it is cheaper. If I buy the PC version, I would have to get a wired 360 controller as well. I love loot games and I am sure I will end up putting a crazy amount of hours into it, plus Borderlands 2 and Halo 4 are on my list to do.

I also have a few friends on the 360 that would play Dark Souls, despite the co-op being less than suitable to meet people you know.

Yup. The only reason to keep consoles nowadays is for exclusives. Or possibly as paperweights... :-)

i impulse bought an xbox 360 for what i thought were exclusives at the time (gta4 and mass effect) ...gave it away to a friend.

impulse bought ps3 for dark souls ........

sigh.

Cheaper? Games on the PC are always at least half the price of the console version, if not less.

There are wireless adapters for your current 360 controllers.

Hm, are you sure Dark Souls will be up your alley then? While there's loot, it's not as important as the whole PREPARETODIE!!!11 aspect of the beast. It's an action game, first and foremost I would say, then everything else it might be - with 'loot game' somewhere far off in the distance.

Dark Souls 360 seems to be around the £15 ish mark for 360, £24.99 if I wait for the 360 Prepare to Die edition.

With the wireless adaptors, I am worried about picking up some knock-off version that break down after a week or use. Just shopping around now to see what price I can get it for. I really don't use my PC for much gaming, so it might be the better option.

Yeah, I have been keeping my eye on the game since it launched last year and it does look awesome. While I do love loot games, I was hoping it would give me a different feel, beyond just picking up flashy items. :D

I honestly couldn't go back to Dark Souls on consoles ever. Booted up the 360 version recently for comparison and it's honestly terrible.

Hrmmm...

Where is the best for the PC version in the UK? If I can nab it cheap enough, I can wait out to get the receiver.

Shopto have it for about £20, Amazon £25. Doesn't seem like any of the download services have it cheaper, at least not any that aren't really shady.

edit: heh, looks like Shopto links are banned on gaf.

I'm in the same boat. I booted up the 360 version of DS after playing the PC version with the DSfix. I don't even know how I was able to play the 360 version previously with the grainy IQ and horrible frame rate. I ended up trading in DS 360 with some other 360 games for a $50 Steam Wallet card.

There is no question that you should be playing the PC version at this point...no question at all. However, I am using my PC on a TV with surround sound and Steam in big picture mode with a wireless 360 controller ;)

Get a wireless receiver and use your existing controllers. (Or, if you have a PS3, use the DS3 for free -- it's the better controller for this game anyway)

Edit: I see that I'm late :P

Durante, I'm currently using version 0.8, and it seems to be working fine. I'm only using the DOF mod, and the screen resolution fix only. All the other features are nice, but I manually backup my saves and use other programs for screenshots and stuff. So, would you recommend using the latest version even in this case?

Heh yeah I'm still on 0.8 as well. Not interested in the blur option or SSAO (since I'm already successfully forcing this through the driver). Definitely gonna patch it up once some HUD mods are out, though.

Durante's SSAO method using the game's own rendering pipelines should be a lot higher quality and less brute force than forcing it through the driver, while being less expensive to boot.

I honestly don't know how anyone could play the console versions ever. Not even comparing to the pc version now. The 360 version was in the console for no more than an hour and I never left the tutorial area got to the Firelink bonfire and the fps was headache inducing the entire time. Makes me wonder how much of a masochist you'd have to be to get through Blighttown which is apparently much worse?

I was really bummed at the time, it was one of the main reasons I even bought a 360 in Sept. Thankfully Read Dead Redemption made up for it.

Edit: As for the wireless 360 controller doesn't it not work with some games because of lazy developers, but wired works fine? I'd invest in a wired version if I were you. I've never liked wireless controllers though, so a bit biased.

Edit2: Got to Firelink on 360 version before stopping
