OLD

The colors are still more or less the same, but eBay's iconic logo has undergone a significant overhaul today. Gone is the disorderly letter arrangement, an artifact of late 90s exuberance about the web (which you might still observe in Yahoo!'s brand identity), replaced by a much more staight-laced and rigid arrangement. Though no longer overlapping, the letters are still touching, which is intended as a subtle representation of eBay's "connected and diverse" community.

Company President Devin Wenig has written an introduction to eBay's new logo, extolling the evolutionary changes the company has undergone in the decade and a half since its previous brand identity had been introduced, and presenting the new design as striking the balance between eBay's proud history and aspirations for a "cleaner, more contemporary and consistent experience." The new logo will be rolled out across eBay's web properties from October.

Yes, that's exactly what I thought when I see the logo.

I feel like there's a way to make the eBay logo have the same amount of personality as the old logo while still looking modern.

I would play around with it myself but no one's paying me lol.

Pretty much. My local cable company went from...

...I need to get into this business.

Graphic design is more than logos you know.

Though honestly the logo is ok. Made it less of a mess while retaining the brand identity. Not everything has to be complicated. Especially a logo.

It's about as good as you should expect.

The old logo is legitimately hideous, but it would have been foolish to completely abandon it. This evolves it without destroying it.

On paper creating a logo sounds easy, sometimes it is.

But what you're not seeing is the 50 other logos and corporate identities that got created, reviewed and subsequently rejected by higher ups or focus groups.

It's not like it was the first thing he made in Illustrator, sent it to his boss and went home.

The old one worked for it's time. The new one is an improvement, definitely tighter, but it smacks of a sort of "me-too" approach a lot of logo revisions seem to have these days. More importantly is how they've managed to successfully tie the color scheme of their lettering in with their identity.

Modern logos = go minimal

Pretty bad imo. Lacks personality (even though it's modern). Why change a logo that's so widely known?

A good logo isn't about personality. In fact, it's the trademark/slogan (typically seen below the logo) that is meant to convey a companies personality and identity, e.g. the McDonald's "M" followed by "I'm lovin' it"

Horrible.

The old one was hideous, but at least had character and a funny vibe.
The new one is just generic, while the touching tangents optically kill it IMO.

Blerg. :(
