Ebay redesigns its logo after 10 years

Retains brand identity, looks classier. Old logo had the whiff of old Yahoo. They're name is so well known that their logo doesn't have to be whack and stand out, they can now refine their image.

Big improvement.
Hey now.

They also have to learn how to kern too.

It looks like the computer was missing the eBay font and converted it to default...

Do not like, but it might look OK when it's used in practice... kind of like DC's crappy new logo.

These logo threads are all the same. People complain about how terrible it is and that they can design better ones but what they fail to realize is that there is so much more to it than a logo on a piece of paper and just seeing it on screen is doing it a disservice.

It's all about context and how the logo looks on different mediums. Like print, online, or merchandise. Look at Comedy Central and DC comics to name a few. People complained about them too but it seems to be working out for them pretty well.

A good logo isn't about personality. In fact, it's the trademark/slogan (typically seen below the logo) that is meant to convey a companies personality and identity, e.g. the McDonald's "M" followed by "I'm lovin' it"

Yes, I know a good logo isn't just about personality. I just feel that the personality of the old logo is lost with the new one (even though it looks more modern).

It reminds me of how I felt about the new Gap logo a few years back. Just my opinion.

What douchebag actually dresses like this?

Yeah, just look at the mother fucker, with his shoes and his jeans! For God's sake, someone find and detain this man, his douchebaggery is only paralleled by the douches he purchased and is likely sequestering in the eBay-branded bags he is carrying!

Also, eBay hasn't updated the logo on their website yet. I'm also always confused, eBay types their own name out with a capital "B" but their logo is always completely lowercase. Why not be consistent?

looks good.

i think it's funny that with this redesign, only a small group of people bitch and moan about it. I think they're just jealous that they didn't get to be part of the design = $$.

Like it.

Minimalism is the best trend and this one retains it's identity with the colours, the old one was a clusterfuck in comparison.

Commercial graphic design seems like one of the laziest crafts on earth lately. "Here's your logo with a thinner font, like everyone else in the world is doing. Now give us our millions, pls."

Elf shoes and cuffed jeans = douche. It's just a fact, don't shoot the messenger.

Looks like an awkward office party photo. Everyone is close enough that they look like they're having a good time, but nobody wants to actually be touching anyone at all.

lacks personality. i hope they re-design the site in a way that utilizes the logo to it's fullest potential. right now if they just replaced it on the current version, you'd think you were visiting a phishing site.

if anything maybe give "bay" or "e" a heavier weight to add some character or visual interest.

I like it but I think it would look better if they kept the continents. The blue circle is too empty IMO.

Would look good if it had the continents in black (the same color as the font).
i never understood their logo. if it's "USA" why does it show the entire north american continent? removing the continents but keeping the "globe" retains the old brand feel but allows them to try something new. granted now it's just a giant dot, and all the viewer is doing is adding the nostalgia of the old logo to it. it relies too much on being familiar with the old brand.

Couldn't they tweak the current logo so that it looks slightly less amateuristic, yet keeps the colors+odd placement of the letters?

Why always go for the extreme, and just use a plain font in all lower cases and call it a day.

It's very standard. At least the old one, being a holdover from the 90s, had some character. The new one is too sterile and loses most of the sense of fun the original had. But I suppose you could say that for eBay as a whole, as well.
hehe

Hay guyz eBay's new logo isn't modern enough so I designed them a new one.

Saved in .jpg format for texture.

I wouldn't call it character. I'd call it kitsch. And not a good kind of kitsch.

Nobody is going to shower this new logo with awards, but it does exactly what it needed to do. Not every new logo needs to reinvent the wheel.

And I don't think the new logo needs to be fun because I don't think eBay needs to be perceived as fun anymore. The novelty of online auctions is long gone, and eBay needs to better position itself as a serious, credible alternative to places like Amazon.

Can't really blame the graphic designers though. After all, they don't get to make the final call. What you're seeing in the OP is probably the 250th attempt, and was preceded by perhaps 249 genius, mind blowing, brilliant designs. But whoever is in charge simply asked to cut out anything new, genius and refreshing.

It's definitely a 'me too' thing.

As a (motion graphic) animator, these type of logos are incredibly boring to play with. :(

How to design your new logo:

1. Open Photoshop, Illustrator, MS Paint, or Powerpoint

2. Choose a sans-serif font.

3. Hit caps lock a bunch of times to randomly determine whether or not the new logo should be entirely uppercase or lowercase.

4. Type company name. If the company name is longer than four letters, rebranding the company so that the name is four letters or less is recommended.

5. Save, print on bags.

6. Invoice client $1,250,000.

you missed the 'reduce kerning' step

The odd placement of the letters makes it look unprofessional.

Ebay are trying to look more up market. The colours and similar font are enough to keep brand recognition and keep it modern. The design is good and fit for purpose. As others have said the designers would of had loads of other wacky and probably better locking logos but they don't get to choose what the higher ups decide, and better looking doesn't mean better for the company. It's a good design all things considered.

Sears made a very similar change recently.
What works is the colors though, since like Google, the visual form has been burned into people's minds that it will seem like a minor change. The iconic quality is lost though.
