PR IS OUT

On September 13, 2012 Bayonetta 2 was announced as an exclusive title under development for the Wii U during the Nintendo Direction presentation held on the same day.
As game developers, we are incredibly excited to be able to announce a new title to all of our fans; however, we are aware that the announcement may have come as a shock to many of you.
As with Bayonetta, Bayonetta 2 is under development and production here at PlatinumGames, and is a true sequel to the acclaimed first game in the series. Bayonetta is one of our most beloved titles, and it played a large part in establishing PlatinumGames as an emerging game studio in the minds of users worldwide. Bayonetta has fans the world over, and we would never dream of alienating them from participating in the future of PlatinumGames.
That being said, the console games market is in a state of upheaval, so establishing a new game franchise requires a considerable amount of will, determination, and love. Bayonetta is a brand that we want to see become stronger, reaching the hands of more and more gamers, so we have continued to consult with SEGA, the previous game’s publisher, on how we can make sure this takes place. Our answer was a new partnership with Nintendo.
Along with their new hardware, Nintendo, as a company, is dedicated to establishing a new future for the games industry, as you can tell by their record of passionate support for gaming. Alongside Nintendo, we hope to grow the Bayonetta brand beyond where it stands today, allowing even more gamers around the world to experience the action of our beloved witch. As developers, we are working hard to make this a reality.
We hope that you will look forward to what we have in store.
Tatsuya Minami
President & CEO, PlatinumGames Inc.

I’m Yusuke Hashimoto, director of Bayonetta 2. It has been three years since Bayonetta, a title I was also a part of… I’m incredibly happy to be able to announce that we are working on a sequel. Alongside Bayonetta’s creator, Hideki Kamiya, I’m working on everything from creating a compelling world to character designs (I will be designing the enemies again), and everyone on our talented team is united around the core of Bayonetta, Climax Action, in an effort push the series forward. For empowering our heroine with incredible new action to introducing new characters (which you may have noticed in the teaser trailer), Bayonetta will further expand on the mythology of the Trinity of Realities – Inferno, Paradiso, and our human world. I can’t wait to take the journey with you.
Yusuke Hashimoto
Director, Bayonetta 2

After Bayonetta was released, I was coming back on the bullet train with Yusuke Hashimoto, pondering various ideas for sequels or spin-offs to Bayonetta over a beer. I never thought we’d actually get to announce a sequel to her story, so I am absolutely over the moon.
Even though there has been a bit of a gap since the release of the last game, but I still got lots of request for a sequel from gamers. We were secretly making one the entire time. While I am not the director of this game, I am still supervising the world, story, characters, etc. in close coordination with Hashimoto, and I have been from the very beginning. You have nothing to work about on that end. And of course, plenty of members from the first Bayonetta are on-board and working hard under the direction of Hashimoto, so I look forward to work every day, coming in and seeing all the progress they have made on the game. With new hardware, we look forward to expanding on the Climax Action of Bayonetta, so sit tight and get ready!
Hideki Kamiya
Supervisor, Bayonetta 2
Director, Bayonetta

Ah word. Another question, that's
Jeanne's All 4 One set
isn't it? So, that could mean that this story is about her instead of Bayonetta?

Jeanne's guns are gray with blue gems, not blue with gray gems. :P Also they have feathers.

I don't think it'd be called Bayonetta 2 if it was about Jeanne.

Honestly, an aggressive Nintendo that actually succeeds in recapturing the mid-tier Japanese catalog could pose an interesting situation for a lot of folks.

If you're multiplatform, and a strong Nintendo reappears, that makes PS4 and Xbox 720 occupy very different spaces from one another (based on the direction Sony and MS have been going with their platforms).

Sony has still been doing a good job of producing lots of exclusives for their platform, as well as having every multiplatform game.

Microsoft has, well, Halo and Forza, with a side of Gears of War. And Gears may not stay exclusive next gen.

So...

If you're not a Halo and Forza fan, what's more attractive:

A PS4 with every western 3rd party game + Sony 1st party exclusives and an Xbox 720 with Halo.

A PS4 with every western 3rd party game + Sony 1st party exclusives and a Wii U with lots of formerly dead and buried Japanese IPs and even entire classes of games + Nintendo's massive field of 1st party software.

And before people get too far on on the train to aggravation-ville, they should remember that the other consoles aren't out a month after Wii U. There's still some time to see how things are going to shape up before Sony and MS launch. I would kind of expect Nintendo knows this very well, and could be banking on showing Wii U has a difference before then.

I've been thinking the same thing.

Nintendo is in the position right now to dominate the Japanese console gaming market. In the next year alone it'll have a NSMB game, a Monster Hunter game and a Dragon Quest game. Considering that line up, and the fact that it's going to have about a year head start over its competition... it would probably be in a Japanese dev's best interest to support the Wii U.

The point isn't worth noting because we don't know how far along in development the sequel even was.

As it stands alot of the rumors surronding Bayonetta 2 had even painted Kamiya as being its director (along with there being a movie to go with it) and given we have a new director and how long the project could have been shelved we don't know what exactly is a carry over.

Any assumptions at this point either for or against your point is too soon and we will need to wait on Plat or maybe even a Iwata Asks to get some info about how things came to be.
If it is really a March release, I can't see how it wouldn't re-purposing prior development.

Even Nintendo's launch games are up-ports, as far as I'm aware.

It seems a bit of a stretch to think that Nintendo has poured a ton of money into and that it's been built for the ground up for the Wii U.

If it's a continuation of current trends then I think it will be very accurate. Obviously, Japanese devs are already struggling with current budgets, more powerful consoles and higher expectations are only going to make this worse.

I truly think that the Wii U will be a beneficiary to these rising costs in next-gen development. While the next Xbox and Playstation will require bigger teams and studios to spend even more time developing AAA titles, Nintendo will be reaping greatly from studios who are hitting their stride this late in the game.

And if Nintendo is smart, they'll promote their indie games much better, and so WiiWare (WiiUWare?) could become a haven for these types of ideas.

With the talk of Nintendo growing the Bayonetta brand it does seem more like this is a more permanent move for the IP to Nintendo's stable. SEGA's logo may just have been in the trailer (and on the final game, likely) because they funded initial development on this particular entry.

I would love for Nintendo to own the Bayonetta IP.

Can you imagine Bayonetta in a Smash Bros. game?

No chance in hell this launches in or before March 2013. Also I don't think it's from the ground up, not at all.

The question of how much was finished, and how much of a straight port this is, and how well this will take advantage of the hardware isn't something that can be answered right now.

Gaf hates Nintendo for abandoning the "hardcore gamer"

Nintendo releases hardcore exclusive

Gaf hates Nintendo for releasing hardcore exclusive

I do understand the frustration, but the downright outrage seems weird to me. If there was a game I really wanted that didn't come out for gamecube last gen that seemed like it should, my response was, "That sucks. Oh well". Still experiencing it on the PC in some ways.

Obviously though, the real problem is that the game went from multiplat original to an exclusive sequel. Is there precedent for this? I'm sure there is, but I'm having trouble coming up with examples.

Bioshock did and least had limited exclusivity. Splinter Cell Conviction did as well and Ubisoft made a deal with Microsoft years prior.

Was Bayonetta 2 a known thing in the public spectrum, were there assets (pics or video) before today?

Nope. This is the first public showing

Also reads like we can look forward t more games from Platinum on Wii U as well as the two announced.

Ah couldn't remember what her set looked like. The colors of the guns were throwing me off.

They could pull a MGS2! :P

Honestly, Nintendo apparently hoped to do this last with Wii. That was the party line at least.

One problem there might've been that they underestimated the potential success and rate of adoption for the Wii, so they lowballed the hardware. Had Wii been something more squarely inbetween Gamecube and PS4, with HD output, who knows; they may have gotten a lot more mid-range developers who shied away from that expensive looking PS4/Xbox arena and went with Nintendo fully instead.

For all that some have painted the current scenario as nothing but a complete repeat of last time, it isn't really. Leading software is still being released for the current generation. Nintendo is launching the next console using that as direct bump and to gain momentum with a different audience out of the gate. The new box is more in tune with the infrastructure (HDTVs) and environment everyone has transitioned over to.

I would say there is actually a window of opportunity here for them to build something, where last time the window had shut before they even walked into the room.

I would add that the development cost of the Wii ironically worked to its detriment; the amount of quick-cash-in shovelware developers trying to make a quick buck on the Wii diluted the library very quickly and added to the disinterest of the traditional gamers and eventually to the new non-gamer crowd who got sick of this stuff too. Games for the Wii U are obviously still going to require a substantial budget; just not as much as say GTA Next Gen or something.

I think games like XB and TLS are good indications of the types of games that Nintendo should be going for with Wii U and I think they've been trying to set this up. Aside from those games (and word that Monolithsoft is working on a new IP) their association with Tecmo and the Fatal Frame and Ninja Gaiden franchises, and now Platinum are all encouraging indicators. They just need to continue so these are more the rules than the exceptions.

I was convinced Bayonetta was dead before this got announced. Platinum's games aren't massive hits in terms of sales, but they are mostly fantastic games and some of my favourites this gen. If they have to go exclusive with Nintendo to get their games made I can definitely live with that. I get the feeling that even if Shenmue 3 was somehow magically announced as a Wii U exclusive, there would still be people complaining about exclusivity rather than the fact that, you know, Shenmue 3 was geting made.

Definitely not related to the Wii U. I think there were definitely rumors of it for other consoles but I don't remember assets.

If we look at how Nintendo has approached things in the handheld market, it seems to support this theory of going all out to win Japan (and its developers) as a way to achieve broader success. Whether or not they have the same issues with selling their platform to the Western demographics in the meantime though remains to be seen.

Nintendo circa the DS-Wii also seemed to have an unified philosophy - that of courting a new audience.

Yeah I would not be upset if Nintendo did buy the IP from Sega. Would at least mean after 2 there is still a future for the franchise.

Oh ok. Does anybody know why "climax action" is capitalized is that a thing in Bayonetta? I will at least get the xbox copy of Bayonetta at some point.

It's one of those silly Japanese things, where they "invent" new genres to go along with a game. Devil May Cry was considered a "stylish hard action" game, for example.

Resident Evil is the most famous example, as it coined the term "survival horror."

Bayonetta is a brand that we want to see become stronger, reaching the hands of more and more gamers, so we have continued to consult with SEGA, the previous game’s publisher, on how we can make sure this takes place. Our answer was a new partnership with Nintendo.

When Bayonetta gets super crazy powerful to fight giant awesome bosses, she's in "Climax" mode. The word "Climax" appears when you can initiate one of her giant hair attacks, too, and the hardest difficulty level is called "Nonstop Infinite Climax" mode.

Climax = the most awesomely awesome things in Bayonetta.

Ahh. I can assume that this game will not be going against God of War 3 in the spring sound like a bad call all around, and this could be buried among the durango/ps4 releases next year. SO... summer?

Also how well did this game sell in japan?

It's like he wants to say how badly Sega dropped the ball, but is too polite to just outright say it.

Once you go Nintendo.... you realize that your love for Sega is based on nostalgia and you don't care to return.

Okay, needs some work to be catchy but at least it's true.

I'm pretty confused. If they announced, say Chrono Trigger 2 with all the original creators (or as many as were still alive) but it would only be for the X-Box 720, I'd just be pretty happy that I was getting another Chrono Trigger.

Can anybody explain the rage?

Some people are going nuts, I mean, freaking death threats? What the hell.

But so many complaints here are getting blown out of proportion and I think many negative reactions are justified considering how really surprising this announcement was.

Me, I'm lucky, a title I've waited what feels like forever has been raised from the dead, and the fact is it's put a new console I've almost completely written off for months on my wishlist. I'll buy it when it's at the price I feel justified paying. I have patience, and my responsibilities take precedence. That doesn't mean I hate Nintendo, hate Kamiya, can't budget, want it on another system, refuse to buy a WiiU, or punch babies.

All this said, that PR release now has me so hyped I can barely see straight.

Its also the truth..if it works..the third party curse could negate everything. 20 million wii-u's sold, all buy NSMBWiiu, 2000 buy bayoneta 2.
