Fighting Games Weekly | September 10-16

Im watching the seccond set since i missed it yesterday. SoCal really choked it up

Yeah, that was pretty gross, I just watched the second set just now- there were almost no matches they didn't let slip all night

Also, was it me or did Ultradavid kinda look like he wanted to smack Magus a couple of times?

I think we all wanted to smack Magus a couple of times so I can understand it.

I think Magus would be mostly fine as a commentator if he didn't act so full of himself. It's fine for him to have opinions, but his constant attitude of "my opinion is the only correct opinion" gets old fast.

And the fact that he consistently discredits the players playing.

Every time anchor sentinel comes in I get ready to rage. We know he has bad match ups on paper. We also have seen time and again that means nothing.

OK, I thought it might have just been me lol

I think that's it.

That, and his laugh bothers me.

Rodger Dodger is best IPW commentator.

I think Magus isn't bad. All streamers have their opinions on things. It's just a matter of who is more vocal and how your opinion stands to theirs. As long as the knowledge is there, we can ease up on everything else.

I generally like Magus' commentary mostly because he actually knows his Marvel better than a lot of general commentators out there and really broke down the meta game really well. The way he outlined the match ups between KBeast and Knives was superlative, he really "gets" what Marvel is about.

I can give him some leeway in the commentary because he was supporting Norcal so he HAD to get hyped for Helm Breakers and happy birthdays, plus it all was falling in his favor when he was hyping up Vergil and Strider (and Viper too). I also give him some leeway in the bias when he comparing Falcomist's Nova to Infrit (Infrit's Nova is way better by the way, I have seen both).

What I don't like is how he completely dismisses legitimately strong characters in tough positions nor do I like how he claims that the game is going to boil down to 7 characters max and everyone else is going to be trash so anyone not picking those 7 characters is garbage. This especially comes to bite him in the butt when these aforementioned characters end up owning teams or winning matches. I am also tired of him not even considering Strider a character when not in XF, nothing can be further from the truth. Is anchor Strider the best position for him? Of course yes but Strider solo is still a very capable character it's just that Norcal hasn't unlocked that style of Strider play yet and would much rather rely on the XFLVL3 Strider.. and thus he has formed his opinion around this playstyle.

Big events in the next week? Seems like another slow one before SB.

Thing is, Magus sometimes isn't knowledgeable about what a player tried to do or something and he decides to call it "wrong" instead of admitting to potential ignorance. He does have decent knowledge, but how you express it is important too.

ultradavid seemed to agree with magus on non lvl3 strider

Nobody is as bad as Hak and Jago. I would pay for any events they go to for them not to commentate. If I wanted to be bored, I'd watch any of Smurf's matches. :)

doesn't matter

Hellpockets brings the HYPE

That's why commentary needs to be a duo thing. One for the hype and the other to sit there and look pretty being the butt of all jokes.

Yeah, Magus loves to say the players on stream made bad character picks or are playing their characters wrong. I don't know why he thinks he knows the game so much better than them.
Sometimes he is right though even if the match doesn't play out like that. Starting Wesker against Viper is normally a bad idea, Viper wins the match up but Wentinel OCV'd Drew's team with Wesker. On paper the better thing to do would've been to start Magneto and that's what Magus commented on.

A lot of other things he said were right too like when he said that GCYoshi should've swapped Spencer in with Chris and used the Gunfire assist to back up Spencer in order to avoid the bad Chris match ups. Sometimes players ARE stubborn and there ARE ways to approach a match differently, Magus isn't shy to comment about it.

Sometimes he is way wrong though.

Ultradavid isn't always right either but he doesn't force his opinions down in commentary and is always willing to admit that he was either wrong or just didn't know. Also it's not that he thinks he is a bad character but that he just does low damage and in anchor position that's a pretty bad spot to be in without XF. Magus on the other hand thinks LVL3XF Strider or non-existent character.

Remember when people used to think regular Phoenix was a non-existent character until FChamp showed the way? Strider is very similar.

Ghaleon said they considered Good vs Evil 2: Vergil edition but didn't think he was hated enough like Phoenix.

Alex Valle is coming to SB.

Best commentary duo is Yipes/Matrix (for Marvel). Yipes is one of the most knowledgeable period, and Matrix AND Yipes can both be hype as hell.

Good vs. Evil was my favourite Marvel 3 event period. Shit was tense from start to finish.

One with morrigan would be cool but their aren't enough morrigans. There's Chris G Dieminion and Nerd Josh. Then there's 3J and Omni the latter hasn't been practising marvel at all.

Yipes/Combofiend for me. Especially now Combofiend has plenty of time during tournaments and events.

People hated Pheonix but it is also always pretty hype and tense to watch. Vergil just isn't the same.

Vergil being evil would be lame as fuck. Isn't on the same threat level or hatred of Phoenix. It would be like doing Good. vs. Wesker after UMvC3 dropped.

Evil being Doom would be lame as fuck too. Ain't no place for that.

SSF4 event at Seasons Beating:

EG vs the World

Floe, PRRog, Ortiz, JWong vs whoever

It's the next best option to Phoenix from Vanilla. He is A) a villain B) associated with fraudulence C) enough top players play him D) gets enough hate among the community E) is a character that you have to know the match ups and utilize snap backs/mix ups... which always lead to hype.

I never had a problem with biased commentators. I just want them to be into the match and be able to know what's happening on screen.

So FGC Gaf, anyone getting borderlands 2 for pc? Looking for some co-op partners.

Honestly, Vergil is pretty damn "evil" at this point. And it's still very early in the game's life.

He's no Vanilla Dark Phoenix, but he's definitely hated by the community.

Seconding Yipes and Chris Matrix as the best Marvel commentators.

I don't think they should do another good vs evil. There's no one that compares to what Phoenix was like last year.

LMAO!!!!

There is a girl coming from Mexico who wants to play Andre in Marvel....

Plus USA vs the World could be more hype than 5 vergil duddes anyways
Yipes, Flocker, DrewGrimey/Padtrick, ShadyK, PRRog vs Justin, Combofiend, FChamp, ChrisG, MarlinPie?

I would watch that. It would be a shit ton closer then USA vs World. I mean if people got hyped for 5 Phoenix players getting clipped I think they can cheer again for 5 Vergils getting bopped.

....He does have decent knowledge, but how you express it is important too.

I think that's the key point, Marvel is a game where you can make all the 'smart' moves and lose badly just because your opponents actions just happened to trump yours.

I don't think Marvel will ever be as much of a 'science' as say Street Fighter, and that's part of its charm.

You'll never be 'safe' in it.

-and because of that, acting like you have the formula for success or know what 'should be done' or not based on what you just saw work (that was a good move) vs what you just saw didn't work (he should have ___ instead) just comes off as kinda... eh....

(to me, anyhow)

Especially in Marvel where it gets crazy really fast and there IS a random factor in how things work sometimes.

Couple that with that 'huk huk huk huk' snicker he has as he sits bemused on his throne just gets under my skin.

though, I think it might all stem from his laugh....

differing theories about the game itself and it commentating theory be damned....

DAT LAUGH

I still think the most hype event would be the theoretical EC vs. WC A-tier players. Not the cream of the crop but the players below. Moonz, Wentinel, Alukard etc.
