31 Days of Horror 2 |OT| The October Movie Marathon

I'm kind of interested in Bereavement, but as I understand, it's a sequel to Malevolence and I've heard a lot of mixed things about that. Do you know if it's necessary to watch Malevolence first or can I skip it?

I personally didn't know it was part of a series until after I watched it, but considering it's a prequel to Malevolence, I suppose it's not all that important to watch the original film first or at all.

Ah, didn't know it was a prequel. That's better then, thanks.

This'll be easy considering all the horror movies on in October, just whether or not I'll make it through the whole movie.

Eh, I think they've been doing it less and less in recent years. I remember in the 90s, I used to leave my television on channels like SciFi, TNT and USA because they'd be playing horror films 24 hours a day during October.

I'm thinking of doing this but I am not sure where I can watch all of them.

I ordered this a couple of months ago

and the Hammer House Of Horror tv series just got re-released on tuesday.

I'm in too. I couldn't finish it last year because of work but I'll do it this time. Better start thinking about what I should watch.

Movie #3 - Friday the 13th
J3Cw0.jpg

This movie is strikingly similar to Psycho, which I suppose isn't too surprising considering the film having some extreme influence over the formation of the slasher. The score is striking similar to that of Benard Hermann's. And both films contain a mother/son dynamic, with a misdirection as to who the killer is. I personally wasn't bothered by the obvious influences, just something I found interesting.

As for the movie, the violence was a lot more like Psycho and the Giallo genre than I was expecting, ie. a camera perspective in place of an actor for the killer to keep his or her's appearance/identity a mystery and continually showing the after math of violence that has occurred. The film was pretty tame by today's standards, so I guess the gruesomeness of the genre hadn't quite taken off yet.

I can't really fault the film for tired tropes, considering it's at the fore front of their conception. We basically have a film with mediocre character development, dumb character decisions, hot women, gore (the kills are pretty straight forward, and inventive kills hadn't started yet since the one-upping within the genre hadn't taken place yet), and a decent - albeit unoriginal score.

Already having overheard the film's ending and already being familiar with the genre the film helped to creative, the film lost a lot of the impact that I'm sure it had at its initial release, but it was definitely an entertaining film and I give it props for being an OG. I also enjoyed the misdirection within the early portion of the film, having what we're led to believe is going to be a main character killed off within the film's first act.

Oh, and I was totally surprised to see Kevin Bacon in the film hahaha.

Unfortunately, this semester is gonna be pretty hectic for me with school and work, but I'll try to see as many new horror flicks as I can. There's a number of classics that I still haven't seen and plenty of recent films to catch up on. I'm excited. October's my favorite month for just this reason.

Yes! I'm definitely on board, although there's no way to manage 31 flicks during 60 hour work weeks. =/

I think I'll do a Peter Cushing marathon and write-up. Maybe, some of his more obscure works.

Like every Halloween for the past few years I will look towards Monster madness for my daily horror fix, and for whatever reason I can't get a hold of the movie or have seen it I'll definitely keep a list handy. Some off the top of my head I really want to finally see Videodrome, been putting it off for too long. Also I wanna see Julia's Eyes and the Devils Backbone. Ive already seen Del Toro's Cronus which I love and Mimic which was good too.

If you're having troubles coming up with a list, here's a pretty epic 4 hour podcast detailing the podcasters favorite horror films of the 80s and 90s. They definitely touch on a lot of the mainstream horror films within those two decades, but a lot of it is incredibly obscure, so if you're into that type of thing, definitely give it a go: http://www.horrorpalace.com/2012/07...06-the-best-horror-movies-of-the-80s-and-90s/

Awesome! Listening now ^^

its great to see so much love for behind the mask and also +1 for Trick R Treat its become a halloween tradition for me and my girlfriend now such a great little flick

Movie #4 - The Monster Squad

"Wolfman's got nards!"

Why don't they make kids movies like this anymore? The 80s were a fucking gold mine for relatively gritty and mature, yet still light hearted and comedic kids films. This film is quite similar in tone and execution to something like The Goonies, and I loved every minute of it.

The special effects are surprisingly bearable, and the costume and set design were top notch and very 80s. I love the atmosphere, dirtiness and overall grit that 80s directors were able to capture through their set and costume design. It's an art form that seemingly diminished in the 90s and completely disappeared in modern film, where everything is way to fucking clean, even within horror.

As a throwback to classic horror, I enjoyed this much more than I did recent efforts like Van Helsing. The kids were well casted, the dialogue was memorable and ridiculously quotable, there was a nice balance between comedy/horror/drama (the relationship between the little girl and Frankenstein was ridiculously adorable) and it was just an overall good film.

I was a bit taken aback by the homophobic slurs littered through out the beginning of the film. I can excuse the bullies usage of faggot considering his actions were placed into a negative light, but even the protagonist referred to things as Homo, and everything not heterosexual seemed to be weird. I know older films had a lot of homophobia embedded within them, considering the era, but I was surprised to see it so prevalent within a family film.

Oh, and I love how the black cop's death was the most insignificant thing ever. Dude was a prominent character, and his death is literally shrugged off and not acknowledged at all Lol. Shit was ridiculous.

I'm pretty sure I've settled on my list:

If you end up liking Basket Case, the director also did Frankenhooker which is a pretty fun horror comedy. Basket Case 3 is also worth checking out, it's not as good as the original but it has its moments. Sadly you'll have to watch Basket Case 2 too though if you plan to watch that, and #2 is pretty dry. It does have a good ending though.

His remaining 2 films (Brain Damage and Bad Biology) are... an acquired taste.

I'd say skip Cursed (if that's the Wes Craven one). I couldn't even make it to the end of that and considering the rep it has, I don't think I missed anything. Interesting list you have, I haven't even heard of the majority of those. I'm looking forward to reading your impressions on 'em.

I typically don't like horror movies, and there is no way in HELL I'm watching 31 of them in October. I'll still join in on the fun though. I'll try to stick to horror movies that month. Ugh.

They're kinda downers. I like happier exhilarating movies.

Tucker and Dalve vs. Evil isn't a downer and is a good one to watch after Trick r Treat & Behind the Mask

Fright Night

and winner of the "much better than you thought it would be" award:

I'm still compiling the whole thing (since some of it will have to be worked around my work schedule), but I've locked down what I want to do:

-since October begins on a Monday, each five-day weekday block will be shaped around a programming theme; they will be:
Oct 1-5: British Horror
Oct 8-12: Ghosts 'n Stuff
Oct 15-19: Slashers: Advanced Studies
Oct 22-26: Universal Through the Ages
Oct 29-31: Three Auteurs, Three Films

-weekends will be Anything Goes

-some of these days will see more than one film being viewed, and the days of Oct 29-31 will guarantee that three will be seen on each day

-there will be rewatches (some long overdue, as will certainly be the case for the special one-night screening of Frankenstein/Bride of Frankenstein in theaters), but the total number of fresh viewings will still equal 31

-there will be many embarrassing admissions of films that I've never seen until this year, but hey, better late than never

Behind the Mask was good. They are trying to Kickstar Before the Mask.

Also, anyone watch Laid to Rest (Chrome Skull)?

The first one? Thought it sucked harder than a Hoover. Never saw the second one, but I can't imagine the situation improved much.

I can guarantee you that Chernobyl Diaries is super bad. A fantastic setting for a horror film goes to complete waste.

I expected as much :( Kinda worried about Donner Pass with that too

Nah, it's some crazy japanese film about a cursed convenience store, I've heard bad things about that Wes Craven film alright and thanks, hopefully I can give a good report and find something interesting.

They dont have to be man, there's loads of horror comedies and monster movies and stuff for everyone, it's a pretty broad genre

I liked Beyond the Mask until it became more serious later on. Then it turns into shitty low grade slasher. The first half of the movie was great.

Ugh, my list has ballooned to way over 31 films. I'm either going to have to get my rewatches out of the way now and not include them in the marathon or start trimming some fat. I guess I can live without watching the Troma movies... *starts trimming*

I've decided to not even make a list. Between Comcast OnDemand and Netflix I should be able to find a ton of decent stuff to watch. I'll just include my reviews as I watch them.

Movie # 5 - House (1986)
ta1XR.jpg

I had so much fucking fun with this movie. The movie starts out relatively seriously and more inclined with hard line horror, but at the middle point of the film, it stops taking itself so seriously and improves considerably.

The awful Vietnam War flashbacks (William Katt as a Vietnam War vet is fucking hysterical in itself), the cheesy plastic looking monsters, the slapstick humor, the attempted juggling of drama and comedic horror, and the random as fuck soundtrack all just work. The movie is basically Room 1408 with a comedic twist and 80s sensibilities. Just when I thought it couldn't get any better, he breaks his medicine cabinet mirror to reveal a portal to some other dimension? The whole fucking movie is ridiculous and awesome.

For anyone familiar with the franchise, is the sequel worth watching?

I think I'm going to go for this. One of the movie channels here had a horror season recently and I recorded pretty much everything, so I've got plenty of unwatched stuff sat on my DVR. A few Blu-rays and even some DVDs that I've never watched as well.

This is the list of 31 I've got, with all the aforementioned unwatched films and a few old favourites and ones I haven't seen in years thrown in. Unwatched in bold.

Alien
An American Werewolf in London
Audition
The Blair Witch Project
Child's Play 3
Cronos
Dawn of the Dead (1978)
Dawn of the Dead (2004)
Day of the Dead
Death Note: The Last Name
The Descent
Drag Me To Hell
The Exorcist
Halloween
Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers
House (1977)
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)
Island of Lost Souls
Jennifer's Body
Ju-on: The Grudge 2
The Last Exorcism
Kuroneko

Mimic
Near Dark

A Nightmare on Elm Street
Night of the Demon
Piranha
Scream
The Thing
Two Evil Eyes
The Vault of Horror

Dunno if I'll be able to manage all 31 because October's quite an eventful month for me, but that's the aim.

I wish I hadn't started on the films I recorded because I could probably fill the 31 slots with unwatched stuff then.

Edit: Thinking about it, I might just sign up for Netflix for a month and drop the repeat viewings. Watching all new stuff sounds more fun.

I'm in. I got banned for a bit last year mid-October and never got to post the rest of my list.

I'll try to avoid that this year.

I saw that when I was a kid and have been meaning to revisit it. Glad to hear it still holds up. Gonna have to see if I can get a hold of that too.

I watched it recently for the first time, and personally thought it was terrible. I don't know if it holds up. To each their own though.

But terrible in a silly 80s way (which is what I'm hoping for), or just terrible-boring?

Edit: I recommended this last year:

I love stupid 80s stuff.
