31 Days of Horror 2 |OT| The October Movie Marathon

These are all movies I've honestly never seen before (some of them are shameful); and I tried to get a nice balance of old and new, mainstream and lesser known, high and low budget, american and foreign, as well as gory and psychological. I'm pretty happy with the list and look forward to watching these films next month.

Feel free to comment on the list, make recommendations, etc.
I wouldn't call that a horror film.

I wouldn't call that a horror film.

It's more fantasy/sci-fi, but horror is a pretty encompassing term, and I feel Monster films such as this fit the mold. A shit ton of horror films are better classified as Suspense/Thrillers than they are pure horror for example. Although Godzilla's 'sequels' are definitely less horror than the original, which I've also never seen, but I wanted something a bit more campy and fun.

That movie is a straight up Action flick. Watch the original.

There's a thin line between Action Horror and straight up Action films. Movies like Blade, Underworld, the later Resident Evil films, etc are all straight up action films with horror elements, but they're still considered horror films despite being more akin to an action film. Horror is such a muddled genre, and is basically comparative to the definition of Black within the US under Jim Crow, ie. One Drop Rule.

Plus it's one film out of 31, my list and I'm free to take liberties with it :)

Hm I may try to do this but for the past month or so I've already been on a kick where of the ~7 movies (previously unseen by me) I watch a week, 2-4 are horror. so I don't know if I'll be tired out by october. If I have the time I may put a list together and then go into a horror holding pattern. edit: and the 31 wouldn't be a problem for me, already on pace to have 1 movie-previously-unseen/day for 2012

I always do this in October. I have a list of movies I'd like to watch. I ordered the Universal Monster Blu-Ray collection recently. I'm stoked to watch that.

I watched the original Fright Night last night, which was totally awesome.

I'm definitely in again this year! :)

This year I have Netflix at my disposal plus a big stack of horror DVDs I picked up at 99cents a pop at a Blockbuster store closing sale earlier this year.

Plus I have my annual favorites to add to my queue (Event Horizon, Trick r Treat, Halloween 3, etc.).

Can't wait til October 1st!

i should say that i have zero hope for doing 31 films, unless i do some triple-features on the weekend, but the bigger point for me is enjoying new horror movies and seeing what others think about movies i've already seen and love.

Hmm, sounds fun. May have to give this one a shot. I see a ton of horror movies, mostly the mainstream ones, but I have a pretty solid foundation on a few sub genres like Zombie movies.

I'll throw a recommendation in for anyone who wants to watch something a little different. Check out the 1977 Japanese film "House" or "Hausu". It's totally bizarre in the best way, far more funny than creepy. It's kind of like a weirder version of early Sam Raimi. The effects are totally wild and the editing seems like it was done on some sort of powerful drug. I can't really explain it better than that, but I really strongly recommend it to everyone looking for something different during this marathon.

As far as availability, it was released on Criterion Bluray and DVD so you can rent it from Netflix, but it's also streaming in the Criterion collection for all you Hulu Plus subscribers out there.

Now when it comes to movies for me to watch, I have a pretty solid horror backlog to catch up on, and I'm sure I'll find some cool suggestions here. I kinda shy away from the mega low budget obscure stuff that exists solely to disgust, but I don't have any problem with gore or scares. I also have a massive DVD collection including some blind buys that I haven't got around to watching, such as a few Halloween movies, and the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre (I'm thoroughly embarrassed to admit I've never seen this despite being a huge film aficionado). I also work at a movie theater, so I'll be sure to catch whatever Horror of the Week is showing there. (The Posession I believe is showing now).

Finally, to cap off my prattling on that probably no one cares about, I have another suggestion. With all the PG-13 crap horror that gets shoveled out seemingly bi-monthly, people tend to miss when an actual good horror comes out. So I find myself defending a lot of movies that get a lot of crap from horror fans. The 3 I want to point out are, Saw 1, Paranormal Activity 1, and Insidious. The Saw franchise is beyond a joke now, as PA is turning out to be, so anyone late to the party might not remember that the original Saw movie was actually fricking awesome. I also love the Paranormal Activity series, and I thought Insidious was a bright spot for horror that I haven't seen in a while.

Anyways, I'd be super interested in discussing more, and I see basically every movie that comes to the theaters, so if any wants suggestions or reviews on any new movies (especially scary ones!), let me know!

A couple of us watched this during last year's marathon. I was looking forward to it as it looked like something I'd absolutely love on paper, but came out pretty disappointed.

I found it to be more of a curiosity of Japanese weirdness rather than an actually interesting movie. For a movie so goofy, I found it rather bland and I remember squirming in my seat waiting for it to end and constantly checking the runtime.

MY FAVORITE HOLIDAY!

love watching horror movies... my suggestion this year:

http://twitchfilm.com/assets_c/2012/09/LovedOnesPoster-thumb-300xauto-17586.jpg

Seconded. I watched it during my marathon last year and loved it.

Fair warning though: It's those of you who are tired of torture movies may want to avoid this one.

Edit: I refuse to label this as "torture porn" because I find that label condescending and it brings a certain a stigma with it, nor do I find it fitting to this movie anyway. While it is pretty extreme and can be a little difficult to watch at times, it's an excellent film well worth your time. I only include a torture warning because I know the reputation such films tend to get and I know some people were avoiding such titles last year.

Bedevilled is worth checking out for any fans of the revenge genre. Region 1 dvd/blu is out Oct 9

I did it last year and enjoyed it immensely.. I didn't manage to do the whole 31 days because I had to go holiday and unfortunately, this year I will be doing the same, I have two holiday trips to go to this time so I am going to miss a few more. But when I can, a horror movie a day!

I will draft out a list when I can, I know that I have a few in mind (and a few re-watches, I allowed myself to have only one re-watch a week)

Here is my list, based on unwatched movies I own, netflix instant view and my netflix disc queue. In no particular order:

1. Splatter Naked Blood
2. Seeding of a Ghost
3. Psycho II
4 Ravenous
5. Prince of Darkness
6. Plan 9 From Outer Space
7. Opera
8. Motel Hell
9. Jigoku
10. Grotesque
11 Dust Devil
12. Don't go Into the Basement
13. Deranged
14. Deathdream
15. Cannibal Ferox
16 Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil
17 The Devil's Rejects
18 Waxwork
19 The Golem
20 The Woman
21 Vertigo
22 Calvaire
23 Play Misty for Me
24 Witchboard
25 Martin
26 Splice
27 Cemetery Man

And 4 wild cards! I doubt I can make it through all these anyway, but I will try.

I began watching movies from my list yesterday, but I'm still going to be participating for the proper event next month. I'll just replace the films I watch with some other films.

Movie #1: Hellraiser
Z3jin.gif

I watched the original Hellraiser last night, and having already seen a few of the sequels, I was taken aback by the fact that the Cenobite's have such little screen time. I really enjoyed the film despite that surprise; the acting was decent - especially Frank, the soundtrack was top notch and the narrative was a lot different than what I had in my head going into the film. My only complaint was the fact that I was probably more attached to Frank as a character than anyone else, and as a result, I didn't really sympathize with the characters I'm assuming were supposed to be sympathized for. Oh, and the dubbing.

While the digital effects have obviously aged pretty badly, the practical effects and costume work is damn good, particularly the Cenobites and 'incomplete' Frank, and that dungeon reminded me of Big Trouble in Little China.

I also liked how Pinhead was pure horror, but in a sense, fair... if that makes any sense. Almost like he has rules and convictions that he binds himself too. I found that to be a nice change of pace for a horror creature. The film also seemed to have a strange anti-sex, or possibly anti-infidelity theme layered through out the film. Pretty much everyone within the film who is sexually active is punished in some fashion, on top of the whole merging of pain and pleasure with the Cenobites.

Also, I'm pretty convinced that the filmmakers behind Spiderman 3 were influenced by Frank's resurrection when constructing the birth of Sandman.

I am gonna do this with you all this year, so, here's a suggestion that recently blew me away.

Storm Warning. Bought the uncut BluRay from Amazon UK, surprisingly good horror movie, really unpredictable. Please, add this to your cues. Has some really cool Aussie dialogue too.

this was fun last year even though in the end I only managed like 12 films, still I'll give it a shot again, hopefully I can find at least a dozen good flms I havent seen and beat my personal best

"Jesus wept."

I watched that for the first time for the marathon last year, and it was one easily one of the best of first viewings I had in that batch. But then I watched Hellraiser 2 and was... less impressed. I much preferred giving less time to the Cenobites, as awesome as they were. It gave them a real sense of dread and you knew some shit was going to go down when they arrived. They were much more haunting as well. Trying to humanize them in the sequel felt like a huge flaw to me.

I might watch Hellraiser 3 or some of the other sequels this year (I'm told Inferno is good) just to see where they go with it, but after the way the Cenobites were handled in #2, I'm not expecting much.

And yeah, the practical effects/costumes in Hellraiser are simply stunning. Frank the Monster is such an amazing looking creature and the Cenobites look just as menacing today as I'm sure they did back in '87.

I'm in! I already do this every October anyway. By this point I'm about two years away from really scrounging the bottom of the barrel for horror movies, though.

If anybody's looking for suggestions, the "Bravo 100 Scariest Movie Moments" list is actually really good, with a decent number of obscure gems and influential works, including a number of foreign films. You can find the list here.

This year I'm working off this list:

1. Last House on Dead End Street
2. Antichrist
3. A Tale of Two Sisters
4. Pulse (the original)
5. Inside

44. Dead End
45. Tenebrae
46. Night of the Creeps
47. Nomads
48. The Asphyx
49. May

I will probably also pick a franchise and try and knock out the whole thing (last year I did The Grudge movies, JP and US). That'll either be Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, or the Quatermass movies.

(Yes, that's longer than 31; I like having options, and might go over 31 anyway.)

If you're having troubles coming up with a list, here's a pretty epic 4 hour podcast detailing the podcasters favorite horror films of the 80s and 90s. They definitely touch on a lot of the mainstream horror films within those two decades, but a lot of it is incredibly obscure, so if you're into that type of thing, definitely give it a go: http://www.horrorpalace.com/2012/07...06-the-best-horror-movies-of-the-80s-and-90s/

Nice, thanks for suggesting that. The Arrow in the Head podcast is the only one I've really gotten into, but this sounds like it's worth a listen. I could always use more 80s flicks.

I'll try my best to do it again this year though I doubt I'll be able to actually watch one every day and match last years 35 movies (including seeing Mad Love after coming home from Drive). I got through a ton of the more popular stuff that I still hadn't seen last year so this year is gonna be a little harder. I though about going through the Nightmare on Elm St. Series since I've only seen the first one.

I know at least these so far:
House (1977)
Kuroneko
1 or 2 Mario Bava
1 or 2 Dario Argento
1 or 2 Silents
Finish The Coffin Joe trilogy

1. The Innocents
2. Angel Heart
3. The Brood
4. Dead and Buried
5. Hellraiser
6. Twitch of the Death Nerve
7. Lifeforce
8. Videodrome
9. Halloween
10. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
11. The Beyond
12. Session 9
13. A Tale of Two Sisters
14. Phenomena
15. REC
16. Poltergeist
17. The Orphanage
18. Fermat's Room
19. Santa Sangre
20. Carrie
21. Frality
22. V/H/S
23. Warlock
24. Ravenous
25. Abominable Dr Phibes
26. Martin
27. Little Otik or Lunacy, I'm conflicted. Never seen a Jan Svankmajer but need too!
28. Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack
29. Pulse
30. Tetsuo: The Iron Man
31. Phantasm

Angel Heart - I love this movie. It's fantastic. I even own a VHS copy and really need to find it on DVD or BR.

A fact you may or may not know - It's rumored that this movie is what ultimately got Bonet kicked off the Cosby Show. The sex scenes were graphic and Bill wasn't happy...

Movie # 2 - Videodrome
OAV8Z.jpg

Two words: Vagina Stomach. I honestly have no clue what in the fuck I just watched. I obviously get the basic theme of the film, ie. media has the ability to shape and mold people's reality, but unless you're only supposed to only come away with that basic message, and not understand the narrative... then I must repeat: I have no clue as to what the fuck I just watched.

That's not to say that it's a bad movie, considering I was thoroughly entertained through out the runtime, and outside of a relatively underwhelming open ended conclusion, the film was pretty much flawless. The minimalist music was effective, James Woods was the shit (WTF happened to his career?), the narrative was suspenseful in its execution, it was thematically sound and some of those effects, particularly those involving the television set, are timeless.

I've yet to be disappointed by vintage Cronenberg, so I think I may have some of his gems that I've missed into my horror movie marathon.

Side note: Having already seen eXistenz, I couldn't help but draw several parallels between the films. They almost feel like companion pieces, or possibly eXistenz is a spiritual successor?

I'm trying to group my movies into themes to make things a little more fun. I still have a bunch of single movies that I haven't paired up yet and this isn't anywhere near close to a final list as I'm still going though what I have and what I can get access to.

* Has anyone seen Romasanta: The Werewolf Hunt? IMDb just lists it as a Mystery/Thriller. Should it not be considered a horror movie? If it isn't I'd rather leave it out of my list.

I saw Romasanta back when it first hit DVD. I don't remember it being much of a horror movie. It was more of a low budget Brotherhood of the Wolf. There are horror elements, but it's mostly about tracking down the werewolf and courtroom shenanigans.

Guess that's off the list then, thanks.

I just dug out the stack of 99¢ horror movies I got at Blockbuster.
I grabbed 2 movies I'd already seen (the Ring two & The Grudge 2), but I mostly picked up stuff that I hadn't seen/sounded interesting:

-The Appeared (Blockbuster exclusive)
-Darkening Sky
-The Last Exorcism
-Quarantine
-Shutter (unrated)

I remember 'The Last Exorcism' being a fairly large release but I don't know much about the others.
Has anyone heard of/seen any of the above movies??

The Last Exorcism is worth a watch, especially for 99¢.

Quarantine is the English language remake of the Spanish film, REC. It's decent but I seem to remember liking the Spanish version better. There is also at least one sequel, which I haven't seen.

I liked The Last Exorcism quite a bit, but I did go into it with low expectations. I thought the lead was quite good, the hook was clever, and I was expecting a much worse ending than the one we got (most others really hated it).

Shutter did ansolutely nothing for me -- too much telling me I should be scared and no showing me why I should be scared.

Quarantine is fine, but the original Spanish language version [Rec] is much better. I don't say this out of anti-remake or pro-subtitle snobbery -- after all, some of the best horror movies are remakes, and English version of The Ring, while not great, is the better movie. But Quarantine ruins the tension of the original by inserting too much exposition, some overly-telegraphed scares, and ineffective gore. Agian, it's not bad, but the original is much better.

I know nothing about the others.

I remember participating last year and I had a blast watching 31 movies. I don't have as much free time this year, but I'll try to watch as many horror movies as I can.

hmmm, ill need to go through my collection, i know i have shit lying around that hasn't been watched at all. Mostly impulse buys, but i might be able to put together a list of 31 titles i havent watched yet.

I like the idea of doing a Tales From The Crypt marathon... might have to look into that.

Brotherhood of the Wolf is the shit. The beginning is a bit slow and the cg beast hasn't aged all that well, but I love it none the less.

If people are looking for something to watch let me suggest:

YellowBrickRoad

My wife and I watched it earlier this year (via Netfix) and while not all that scary it's one of the most disturbing movies I've seen in a long, long time. Possibly the best horror movie I've watched this year.

Brotherhood of the Wolf is the shit. The beginning is a bit slow and the cg beast hasn't aged all that well, but I love it none the less.

Have you seen the deleted scenes? The main guy actually had a whole fight scene at the start that would have resolved the slow beginning, but they cut it out so it would be a surprise when he started kicking ass all over the place later on. I actually like it better without the fight scene - slowness and all.

Quarantine is the English language remake of the Spanish film, REC. It's decent but I seem to remember liking the Spanish version better. There is also at least one sequel, which I haven't seen.

The sequel to Quarantine is actually pretty decent. Obviously, it's nothing like REC 2 at all (if you've seen the ending of both Quarantine & REC you'll understand why) but it's an okay zombie flick. Not run out and get it good, but easily one of the better straight to DVD zombie flicks we've gotten over the last few years. I'm sure there's worse ways to spend 90 minutes.

Bereavement and After.Life are some other recent under the radar horror films that I've enjoyed.

I'm kind of interested in Bereavement, but as I understand, it's a sequel to Malevolence and I've heard a lot of mixed things about that. Do you know if it's necessary to watch Malevolence first or can I skip it?
