I've got Chrome set as my default and where it's launched from determines what version of the app runs. If I launch it from metro I get the metro app, if I launch it from the desktop I get the desktop app.
.

That's good for you, but I never want to use a metro browser on a laptop, there is no point to it.
The point is that if you don't want the metro app then just don't click chrome in the start menu and just pin chrome to the taskbar instead.

We can't have our own custom picture in the Metro background? Really Microsoft???
I know you can probably hack it but seriously some really questionable design decision here.
I think microsoft said that had to do with the zoom out function and the layered background effects or whatever (mainl the zoom out function). Said it would require a very large image or something.

Zoom out = control + wheel or click the minus in the lower right. Allows you to name and move your tile sections or quickly get to something.

I want to be able to launch desktop Chrome from the start screen. Why should I first click the desktop tile, and then the taskbar, when I can just launch it from its own tile like ANY other application that Win8 lets you do? IE supports this, but Chrome doesn't. It's easy to see who messed up here and it's not Microsoft.

win key + number is your friend. (numbers correspond to where the application is on the taskbar. Starts at 1)

Yea that's true. Well Chrome metro is still in beta so you can't expect it to be perfect. You could always suggest that Google add a feature.

Chrome is always in Alpha/Beta stage... desktop version performes worse in Win8 vs Win7 - for instance, flash videos are jerky sometimes which never happened in Win7 on same computer.

I think that's actually from the newer build... It's been this way lately on both W7 and W8 for me...

But the background image stays the same when zoomed out... And if you have enough apps you can see that the image is not really that big, they are just made so they can be perfectly tiled.

heh yeah you're right. I thought it was bigger when zoomed out, guess not. Anyway that is the excuse Microsoft gave.

I am at work so I cannot verify this and I really don't recall, but doesn't it have a parallax effect when you scroll through your pinned apps? I believe the seams were an issue that MS mentioned.

Dissecting the new Windows 8 Start UI: Layers, Images and Colors oh my!

The Start UI makes use of at least three layers – a foreground (tile) layer, a background image layer, and a background color layer. Farthest from the eye is the background color layer, which is set to a single RGBA color (#0e6e39ff in this case) and fits to the dimensions of the screen. The optional middle layer contains an image used in conjunction with clever parallax scrolling to subtly hint visual depth. Floating on top are your tiles.

If that's the case then it settles it. Though it could be cool to have a tool for artists to develop those parallax images and share in a gallery or something.

You're invited to celebrate.
Windows 8.
Please save the date.
We want to communicate.
That we hope it's not too late.
And we haven't sealed our fate.
By making users irate.
We think it's gonna be great.
Now that we have a slate.

[s]So it's launching one day early now?[/s]

Edit: nvm it's just the event.

For you guys that don't want Chrome Metro, I did it:

Make sure that Chrome is your default browser for everything. Start the Metro app. Then close, go to "<user profile folder>\appdata\Local\Google\Chrome" and remove the metro folder. Also, remove the tile from the start screen. Go back to the Chrome folder, go to "Application" and create a shortcut for "chrome.exe" on the start screen. Now you can go there, right-click on it, open the folder where the shortcut is and then right-click > Properties, set to Read-Only. You can also rename to "Google Chrome" if you want. Done.

If you don't set it to Read-Only, the shortcut will eventually be gone from the start screen. But even if I try to open from the metro side, anything will go to the desktop version.

Somewhat off-topic, but Office 2013 pricing has been revealed. http://www.theverge.com/2012/9/17/3348176/office-2013-pricing-office-365-home-premium-pricing

Wonder how exactly the Home Premium subscription works. Under licensing model it says household. Do all five have to share the same Microsoft account?

For a single user, it's rather expensive (if you only use one device). But spread over five devices in a household it's really not that bad.

As long as you have an account on the Device/PC, all user accounts can access the programs with their own account.

Considering the programs that come with the Subscription is worth $400 stand alone, $99 a year isn't bad (also you can install on 5 pc vs. 1 and you get 20GB extra storage on SkyDrive and 60 Skype minutes a month).

I'm seriously tempted by it. (would definitely get a rumoured subsidised Surface with a 2 yr. Zune Pass +Office Subscription)

Yeah, the price is not thaaat bad and with the spread of additional devices like tablets, I'm sure a lot of people are interested in a five-device license. However, most of those people still won't be willing to pay the price.

I'll probably go back to Libre Office once the 2013 preview ends. Too broke to buy it.

http://www.theverge.com/2012/9/17/3348882/asus-windows-8-rt-tablets-rumored-to-start-at-599

While some tablet makers have suggested that Windows RT devices could be priced as low as $300, a leaked slide from ZDNet shows that Asus isn't aiming to compete at that end of the market. If the rumored prices are real, the Tegra 3-powered Asus Vivo Tab RT that we saw at Computex will start at $599 (with a $199 dock), while the Vivo Tab with an Intel Atom chip will start at $799.

lol

Right click on bottom left corner literally saves Win8 from being an unusable mess for me. That menu is a life saver and totally makes up for the lack of start menu. I'm never going back to 7 as long as I can find drivers for my other computers.

Yup, one of the best features of windows 8.

Btw, i really want to put something else in the title besides "Windows 8 |OT|". Maybe something that would be aimed at all the haters. Just having Windows 8 |OT| seems kinda boring.

Interesting choice. :p

This is a bad idea and you should feel bad about it. An OT is supposed to provide information, not lure some haters in. Why do you think this here is one of the "cleanest" Windows 8 threads on GAF?

That's true :(. Is there a positive title you can think of?

I'm told the Metro stuff bogs down memory and even when "hidden" it's still there sucking up memory. I'm obviously ignorant to all of this, but is there any truth to this? If so, how big or small of a problem is it?

Trying to install Windows 8 on my friend's laptop is just serving to reinforce my strong beliefs that SW/HW should never come from different vendors. At least I personally would never use such a device.

That's pretty stupid. It highlights the need for vendors to use well documented components instead of cheap Chinese knockoffs from companies whose websites are run from a 33.6 modem somewhere Shenzhen.

It's one of the reason I prefer building my own PCs.
