Fighting Games Weekly | September 17-23

I j ust feel like he has a good idea about a wide variety of fighting games, even outside Capcom games, and would serve to be a great rep to the Capcom community especially considering his history in Capcom fighting games.

But yeah he is a bit knee-jerk on the balancing stuff too. Viscant pretty much always knows what's up and is pretty hard to disagree with when it comes to stuff about balance, at least when it comes to UMvC3. Like Zissou says above me, I think he's also insanely good at articulating what he means, which not a lot of players are good at.

That makes a lot of sense. I always thought of Justin as being poor with explaining things (like when he says he has strong "fundamentals" what does that mean actually?") I'm pretty surprise by the stuff that goes into his eventhub columns, it's so well thought out and phrased

Viscant's background in gambling and reviewing Fleshlights might hurt his chances. I would nominate Ryan Hunter or Arturo as replacements for Seth.

honestly Haunts is the best candidate. He has worked for Capcom before, lives in Nor Cal so he doesn't have to relocate and he is in good standing with the community.

Isn't that Haunts?
Maybe!

Odd post timing though. Posted after Lord haunts made his departure, and it still isn't a definite "we-are hiring," because they say only if the budget allows it.

I would be okay with haunts though. He has his roots in the community. I kinda see him taking over Brelston or w/e's role though, even though he's already pretty good at streaming. Maybe he got a promotion?

Yeah, but how is his understanding of games? He quit Marvel early on in Vanilla. An important part of Seth's role was commenting on game balance.

Yeah this is why i'm iffy on Haunts. I have no idea how much knowledge he has about fighting games and game balance. Also he thinks Magus is really knowledgeable which scares me.

You guys think Haunts should be disqualified because he stopped playing Marvel in tournaments early on and thinks Magus knows his shit? Whaaat the fuck.

I thought haunts still played Marvel? He has weird ideas on balancing though. I put the bar pretty high when I consider people I'd like to be balancing reps to Capcom. Pretty much only Viscant, Wong, Art and maybe Yipes but I doubt they'd hire Yipes. haunts being in Norcal definitely helps his chances a ton, and I don't think he's a bad choice either. Being a rep means more than just knowing your balancing. Presentability, etc. is huge.

Anyways, WE GOT AN EVENT FOR THIS WEEK GUYS. King of GGPO Summer 2012 added to OP. Happening tomorrow. There are two different times on the official site for when it starts so I just listed the earliest one.

lol the dislike here for magus amazes me.

It's because he's bad at speaking on the mic without sounding like he's misinformed about something. If he could fix that, then I'd change my opinion.

And Haunts definitely still plays Marvel. Where you guys got the idea that he doesn't is beyond me.

The inability for people to understand why people are criticizing Magus in the first place amazes me. Like he is beyond criticism.

Let's not beat the dead horse now though.

I understand -why- some of you don't like his commentary but I personally think it's silly. We should move on though, you're right.

Haunts would make a perfect community manager imo

I assume you guys dislike his Marvel commentary. I don't watch that game much nor do I understand it, so I can't say anything about that. But I really like his SF4 commentary, I think he's one of the best out there at commentating that particular game.

They should hire Mike Ross.

Whoever it is will have zero say in the game development or balance anyway. All they will do is travel around trying to justify Capcom's latest bullshit whilst saying they are listening to the community.

Might as well get some good gifs out of it.

Viscant is also really good, and Chrisis is just decent. Viscant is the only person who understands how Marvel tiers works, and that's the kind of person you need advising on fighting game future.

yea chrisis says some dumb shit (holy crap firebrand theorycraft) but i like his essays

Hiring the people's champ to be the community manager is too unreasonable for Capcom.

This man has a point.

Maybe they won't give the person as much power as Seth got because of Seth's particular history with his novels of theory and whatnot, but still with the way Capcom works the person will still have some degree of a voice. Even Brelston (the Capcommunity guy) gets to sit in on meetings of Megaman's future and contribute ideas.

Like I said, balancing is not the biggest aspect of a rep. Knowledge and standing with the community is important (for us), as well as presentability and general PR ability (for them).

Who could fill Seth's shoes? I can't think of anyone as intelligent as he in the community.

What the heck is the point of an intelligent community manager? It's not like your suggestions to those numbskulls in Capcom Japan has a high chance of being heard if you don't have the persuasiveness or leadership. IMHO some theory fighter god would be a terrible suggestion for a community manager, someone like Ponder, Alex Valle, Spooky, Haunts, etc who have been organizing things for the FGC and knows how to get things done would be better suggestions.

Seth saved us from an even stupider Phoenix in vanilla MvC3 that the dev team thought was okay, and tried to nerf her down as much as possible. Never forget.

Yep and who would really want to do it?

"We are joined here at WNF by the Capcom community manager Mike Ross. Mike, there is outrage in the fighting game community about Capcom's decision to make SF5 special moves DLC purchases, which can be powered up by spending more money. What do you have to say to that?"

Happier times...a lot has changed in that short time since :(

Well, I mean if she was too broken, wouldn't she have been banned anyways.
Though I guess it wouldn't be easy to tell in a couple months.

Well if there isn't any new support coming for the games out currently, then would anybody really need to be all that knowledgeable? I'd assume whoever would just jump in and be involved in new projects and develop his knowledge as it goes along. I mean no one is going to know as much as Seth in regards to Marvel and SF4.

My point was more that the behavior is indicative of a kind of character.

Much has to be considered for someone in this position. Especially with a company that has to work with overseas development. Seth's job dramatically changed since he started, and I'd imagine Capcom would most likely have to parse over some of that responsibility/training over to the new person. If you look at it, the position isn't probably just playing pre release Capcom fighters, talking about balance and going to events. There's most likely a ton of other things involved.

Had to work in an environment like this for years in game development and I went through the same thing as Seth did. Started off with one position, then got placed doing several other things you had to learn how to do, on top of existing tasks/responsibilities. Telling the concept team to use certain ideas or strategies, but for them to completely deny you because they have priority, you aren't in the Headquarters country, or are at the request and demands of a committee/board. Sure it seems like a dream job from the surface, but I only hope the person who eventually gets this position is ready for working with a Japanese games company.

Viscant is a smart dude. I'd love to see him gain more influence in just about anything related to the FGC. He is certainly no stranger to the limelight either. Someone like him might be better suited at a place where he'd have a chance to flex his creative muscle, though...

Is X-23 really your sister?

Needs to be mentioned that Maximilian will probably make a great Capcom community manager too.

What type of character? The guys who write long essays, pretend they know everything but in reality don't have what it takes to win matches consistently?

max with DA TRUTH!

Dude, just no. Knowledge is knowledge. There's nothing more vile imo than downplaying someone's knowledge because "hurr I wanna see the receipts results" takes a precedence.
