Marathon Releases September 23, 2025

That's a look of regret, like "i ate taco bell before going deep woods camping" type of regret. I've been there

I totally thought this was going somewhere else.

I really like the art style, it feels very fresh.

No proximity chat : perfect (dont want to talk to ppl i dont know and dont want to ear them).
The usual sweaty population of this kind of game dont like it? i hope so.
No F2P, also perfect. F2P is a cancer. (except warframe) :D

I'll try it with some friends for sure. Never wanted to play extraction shooter for all that i mentioned before.
Maybe this game will have a lot of people that wanted to try this kind of game but less sweaty. The others can stay on Tarkov if you they like it so much.

I hope there won't be too many cheaters.

I finally watched the cinematic reveal trailer and it's strinking.
Looks fantastic. They are cyborgs? angsty, teen cyborgs who choose weird parts for their builds? shocking, I know.
I like the style and boldness of it. Some said it looks like fortnite characters in realistic setting?! what? not at all. Looks like shiny, plastic robots. Pretty cool.

Also, animation style with high shutter speed VERY MUCH reminded me of Jibaro

is it the same artist?!

Yes sir.

I actually like the style, it's just a bit odd seeing it used in game cinematics. It's so distinct and recognizable

It feels a bit cheap or something. I don't know how to explain it lol

He also directed the third episode of the first season of Love, Death & Robots (The Witness)

Good comeback. You think of that one for any more than 10 seconds? Just because a game isn't for you doesn't mean you should act like an idiot.

Just joking around, don't take it seriously. I might try the game out if there is a BETA or F2P version in the future.

yeah I lvoe his style and it works amazing in this trailer. It's a fantastic trailer.
I think the gameplay looks great too. Really good. I don't see the bad graphics everyone is talking about. Maybe they don't like the style but style being so plastic and metallic doesn't mean the graphics are simple.

Not sure if i like the look of it or not. It seems heavily inspired by the "Time Loop" and "River Siren" shorts from the Love Death Robots show mixed with an updated version of that early CG you would see in the 90s on shows like Reboot.

Which is kind of cool, but it's not quite coming together for me.

it's insane to me that people are saying it looks horrible and the characters look horrible.
It's not concord.

There is actual art and style going on. it looks freaking great. What a wonderful cyberpunk aesthetic. wow.
but it's extraction shooter.... what do you do in those games? do I have to talk to someone ?! do i have to stress out and be competitive? I ain't about that life

The visuals are great if someone likes really colourful sci fi where there's a lot of bold flat colours gradients. And also, if the gamer likes characters with tons of shit on their face and costume decked out with tons of doo-dads. The inventory UI is similarly simple where it basically resembles a 16-bit retro look.

As for extraction shooters, I dont play them.

But the core gameplay loop is playing solo or as a team to do objectives (kill someone, find something, whatever questy task given), and then get out by reaching an exit point. If you successfully get out, you keep your gear for the next match. If you get killed, you lose your gear and the next match you start from scratch finding stuff again.

The games are also unpredictable where online gamers may or may not be your friend. You might find people and work as a team, or backstab each other and take their gear. The are one death kinds of games. So think of it like playing a shooter in Search & Destroy mode where everyone gets one life. So these games are super competitive as teams are all trying to do the objective and not get killed. In typical shooters and MP modes, you respawn and run back to the action. So if you get killed who cares. But in extraction shooters, it's like BR games.

The popular PC extraction shooters seem to be gritty looking in that desperate world setting. Marathon is doing something different with a bright sci fi art style.

Tell me you've never played an extraction game in your life

The Division's 1 Dark Zones are the most similar thing to an extraction shooter I played. Mostly because I did work there when it released. And well, I have around 400 hours in Destiny 2, which is somewhat similar.

I don't like competitive PvP and other than when playing with friends, I normally have the other players muted when playing multiplayer.

I'm an adult that doesn't find these videos or sittuations shown there fun or appealing. Maybe for teens that follow these streamers or youtubers is fine, but not for me.

Instead of proximity chat you'll have to communicate by emotes maybe
The Helldivers 2 system of predefined messages and emotes works very well.

it's insane to me that people are saying it looks horrible and the characters look horrible.
I think the art style, art direction, level design, character art, weapon art and character design is top tier.

Visuals -I think it's mostly a lighting- seem a bit off, but I think it's a MP focused thing to make sure it runs well in low end devices to ensure a bigger potential userbase.

Regarding the characters, most people prefer good looking characters who clearly look like males or females. But due to forced DEI woke propanda purposes, some companies are mandated to put 'trans-friendly' characters, to don't include attractive women and almost forbidden to have white, male, heterosexual protagonists.

As a result in this specific game, in addition to get messages in the lore about trans rights and pregnant men, you got androginous ugly characters that most people who normally play these games (way over 90% of the shooter and competitive games players are male, and most of the population is straight) don't like. You got females with some male body proportions or face structure and males with drag queen make up and some female proportions.

But at least in this case -unlike in Concord- they have a great art direction and great character designers that almost compensate the weirdness they generate to most people thanks to the colors and shapes of their clothes/exoskeleton/accesories.

Probably because you've never played an extraction shooter in your life, one that gets you really scared in the pants, like Tarkov.

Division Dark Zone and Destiny 2 aren't similar at all.

In Tarkov you would be shitting your fucking pants sir. And then it would be so good to ask someone, hey dude can you help me out Im scared as fuck. Or hey please help me, I have no clue where to go or where to extract. Or hey please don't shoot Im trying to do this particular quest.

You probably are missing the entire context, like when Sequisha (the guy with the thick mustache) was helping the obvious noob how to work his weapon, how it controls, and then he got shot by an NPC.

If you're stuck in a house because there is a lot of gunfire happening around you, and you sit around, and someone comes into your building screaming about extended warranty that shit is A. funny, and B can give you a tactical advantage.

I am also an adult and it seems you just do not understand the context of what an extraction shooter is, and how proximity chat makes those games better. It has nothing to do with teens.

When you can talk your way out of situations without violence, in a extraction game? That is a pure W my man. Making a trade with a random player for loot for instance.

Teaming up with other scavs etc.

For a game where the PR team and the director keep going on about leaving the match with a good story, not having proximity chat is a huge fucking miss. It also baffles me that, knowing this game will have puzzles and hidden secrets to uncover, they won't allow the community to engage with each other more within the game itself through a feature like proximity chat. Dumb choice. No excuses.

You basically go in and try to find/scavenge items, weapons, mods, etc, to make your build/character stronger. Thing is you'll be fighting not only NPCs but also enemy players.
If you get killed you're done, there's permadeath so you'll lost all the items you're carrying with you and have to start from zero (if you don't have items saved in your stash).
So basically you have to consider what type of run you wanna make before matchmaking. Maybe you'll go with your best gear (and risk being killed and robbed basically) or you do a decent build and try to survive while you try to kill other players or find some good shit.

... is getting me trans vibes. the body proportions are also very weird. Is not Concord leves of gross but is definitively in the same category.
Even if that pic was 4k res with awesome lighting and shadows, that character looks like doghshit.

The designers seem to like putting all kinds of weird video game or calculator looking button icons as costume gear.

Cant wait for streamers to analyze all the character model skins.

The forced DEI in recent years turned people mad.
They are saying Forspoken character is dei and woke.. while she is a fucking super model ella ballinska. hot af.
People are saying tlou2 tv show sucks because Ellie actress looks like ass... cmon. her looks should not matter at all. The show is great.

People are insane. If everything is hot and sexy, it will ruin gaming in the 180 to being dei/woke.
Like... Stellar blade is my fav 2024 game. EZ... but all people talk about is EVE booby costumes.... while the game itself is overlooked. You will hardly find and screenshots or gameplay of other stuff than Eve costumes.
but the game is fantastic. Great combat, world, music, level design and so on. It's genuinely a great playing and lyrical game and I recommend playing it through 1st time with starting costume and the more "robot" fitting costumes rather than straight bikins.
That comes from someone who unlocked ALL costumes and was fishing for 5 hours to unlock that bikini :P The moment I returned to main quest, I dressed back in eve canon costume.

Nah, we don't cry. We simply are normal people who want retarded screaming rat kids and retarded losers who scream at extrangers to be extinct, or at least to be muted from our games. Precisely because we're tired of them.

Success is never guaranteed, but looking at the big success they had with all their previous games, and the early numbers of Marathon are pretty huge and prove the game caused a big interest:

Huge viewship both that the initial Marathon reveal (20M views in a few days) and last weekend gameplay reveal got (got a peak of over half a million concurrent viewers watching it live only counting Twitch), or their Discord going to over 230K users this weekend.

Everything can happen, specially releasing it a month or two before GTA6, but the most likely case is that it's going to be another huge GaaS success for Sony, are Destiny 2, Helldivers 2, Gran Turismo 7 or MLB.

But yes, nobody at Bungie or Sony said it's going to be a guaranteed success even if they may be pretty confident on it. Even the most successful devs never give stuff for granted, know that any game can tank, even due to stuff they can't control.
People in Gaf are unaware how much the twitch crowd like these kind of games.

I'm not asking everything being hot and sexy, I'm just saying that ugly, weird, uncharismatic characters don't sell character based games, as seen in Concord or Destruction AllStars. That games need to have charismatic and appealing characters for the average people who traditionally gets attracted by the type of game they are targeting.

In this case, they are doing a very hardcore competitive PvP FPS. Meaning, over 90-95% of the audience are going to be young males from NA and EU. So, statistically, most of them white and straight. And since in these hardcore competitive games they spend thousands of hours in the games, pretty horny too. So they will prefer hot woman and badass jacked males -being many of them white like them- than androginous lesbians, combined with obese people, granmas and dudes who didn't pass the cut to participate in Ru Paul's Drag Race.

The excuse to include these characters that make people run away is that they want to attract more female and lgtb players, and make them more trans friendly. But most females and lgtb people also prefer charismatic attractive females (even if not almost nude) and good looking males, not ugly, androginous, uncharismatic, weirdo characters.

Regarding Stellar Blade yes, it got the attention of many people because of hot females. But as you mention, putting that aside the game is great in many areas, it's a very good, I think under rated game. But it performed very well and their devs are happy with its results. If they would have put instead the typical ugly, angry, androginous lesbian of the typical western game as protagonist, most of the people who bought it would have ignored it.

Regarding the Forspoken actress yes, she's so hot. But yes, they did put a black female as main character because of DEI to get a 2x combo in their DEI checklist. Same goes why they casted that Ellie for the tv show, she is very talented but got DEI casted because of being LGTB and let's say 'not attractive for the male gaze' when they also had like maybe half a dozen very talented actresses who also are very talented but look like way more similar to Ellie.

I suggest you to compare the main shooters including the extraction shooters during the last years in a website like https://sullygnome.com

Tarkov has insane numbers specially on its peaks, as I remember the other extraction shooters doesn't. Marathon got this weekend an insane peak for a gameplay reveal event.

I remember the Destiny beta and the. They released the game with like two more destinations and the entire gaming community was like, uhh is this it?
