thanks a lot.. this is great.. but i have one issue.. for some reason, whenever i go to the scripts menu and choose 'import with LAME' i get a little dialog box that says: 'where is iTunes-LAME.app?' and i have to choose the app .. does this happen to you? its very strange.. i dont know why it doesnt remember .

:(
Sorry, that didn't happen to me on the two machines I own.
Try to log off and then log in again, then restart iTunes and try one more time.

EDIT: I remember to have read something about this issue in another forum which is down at the moment. Please post your progress, I will come by with a fix for this later on.

A guess into the blue:
If there are more than one user accounts on yourt machine, try copying the whole "iTunes" folder (cmd-c) from your User Library "Username"/Library/iTunes/Scripts/

to the Volume Library on the "Your Harddisk"/Library/ (cmd-v).
If there is already a iTunes folder contained, just copy the "scripts" folder.

If this worked out for you, please pop a line so I can edit the original post.

I just converted from a PC to a Macbook Pro and I am loving it. However, can anyone recommend a good AIM substitute? I used to use AIM+Aimutation for my PC. I have been using Adium and a I quite enjoy it, but my PC friends repeatedly tell me my font looks retarded, and I am kind of bummed I can't customize my profile as much as I could prior.

Your pc friends are retarded. Experiment with Adium's settings. You can adjust a lot of stuff from appearance to fonts. You are just not familiar with osx applications. So, you need to look at all of the preferences and download the new beta, it's better than the current stable build.

I'll add to this list (awesome post Boards of Canada).

AppZapper

Company Line: 'Everybody loves the drag and drop nature of OS X. Drag an app into your applications folder, and it's installed. You'd think it would be that easy to delete an app — just a matter of dragging it to the trash. But it's not. Applications install preferences, caches, and other support files throughout your computer that take up space and generate clutter. Deleting these by hand every time you delete an app is a pain.'

Me: Great little app, really simple idea, beautiful execution. Cleans up pref files etc without searching. Everyone should install this. Does what it says on the tin.

^ Yes that AppZapper is soo awesome. Also don't forget to download VLC for videos it plays almost anything.

I raise y'all a:

I bought this program and use it regularly. I can't count how many times it saved me from missing class. A+. Click to pic to go to the website.

Awesome thread, keep it going!

Btw, is there some nice little program that changes your wallpaper every 24 hours? I just found about 58 new ones and it would be cool if they automatically changed every day. Also, what's the best free substitute for Microsoft Words?

there is an option in OSX to do that without the need of a 3rd party program..

go to: System Preferences > Desktop & Screen Saver

at the bottom you can check off change picture every 5 seconds, minute, 5 minutes, 15 minutes, 30 minutes, hour, day, when logging in, when waking from sleep, and random order.

:)

oh, and AppZapper is awesome.. thanks jonhuz

Thank you very, very much. I haven't received my MacBook yet, so I didn't know but I'm in the process of gathering wallpapers. :)

Nice pick, this sucker wakes me up every morning... I just set it to a 100 second fade in, and I'm good to go.

Perian is pretty amazing. I haven't tried a lot with it yet, but it sure is a nice free codec if it is as sounds.

This is probably a topic that has it's own thread but...I've been trying a lot of browsers lately. I can't seem to settle down into one or the other because they all have their own particular strengths and annoyances.

Safari - it's pretty and does everything pretty well, but it just seems to be lacking a lot of features of the indie browsers that seem fundemental for people who really use their browser a lot. It's also screwy with several sites I go to.

Firefox - Sometimes it seems like the obvious choice, there are so many add ons and the newest beta seems nice and stable. But I don't love it on Mac the way it seems obvious on PC. Not sure why, really. Also, there's been all this talk on the web and even from Mozilla about the recent vulnerability to hackers. I haven't been able to figure out what that means to me quite yet.

Opera - What I'm using right now. A nice browser. Sort of clunky in the interface, but it also seems like there isn't anything you can't change or do in it, which is impressive. They literally seem to have everything and the kitchen sink (I think there's a kitchen sink widget) in this program. It has full screen browsing! Really, I feel like I'm not sure about it yet.

OmniWeb - A pay browser! How archaic! But honestly...I really like using it. It's clean, fast and powerful with a lot of great features. I like the tab tray. I like the developer in some ways, so I'm hopeful of updates, etc. A strong contender actually, but again, it lacks some of the flexibility of the super-indie browsers.

Shiira - I tried this on a lark. Damn, super beautiful! Not an important concern to me, but it's like browsing in a cool car. Not stable enough to use all the time, though :(

I'm not really looking for a browser sound-off, but if any of you folks have some compelling things to say about why you use one or the other, or if you use many, etc. I'd love to hear about it.

I grabbed Perian over the weekend and so far I'm very impressed. Seems to play everything I throw at it in QuickTime. Nice little update that I found on www.freemacware.com. I just set their feed in my Safari RSS reader, and check out the new stuff everytime they post something.

Most of my favorites have already been posted, but here's a couple more that I love using:

Xee
http://osx.iusethis.com/app/xee
Excellent Preview replacement. It's blazing fast and has tons more functions, all without being bloated.
xee.png

R-name
http://osx.iusethis.com/app/r-name
If you do a lot of file renaming like me, you'll definitely want this.
Easy to use, and has tons of switches to help rename messes into sequence.
It's donation-ware, but rarely pops up a nag screen (the coder would like you to support UNICEF)
Program's in English, BTW, but this is the only screen I could find offhand.
rnamescreen_lja.jpg

OtaClock
http://www.konami.jp/kojima_pro/english/dl/item_ota.html
Otacon clock based on that terminal in the MGS2 tanker chapter.
Behaves like a widget outside of the dashboard. Has an alarm function, too.
Very clean, and gets bonus points for the pixel art.

Pastor
(FREE)
Pastor is an application to store passwords, website logins, and other things that don’t find their way into the Keychain. Pastor also offers a passwords generator.

iClipIcon128.gif

iClip

iClip is a new multiple clipboard/scrapbook software application for Apple Macintosh computers with OS X.
With iClip, you can drag & drop or copy & paste all kinds of information into its “clipping bins”. You can store:

• text
• pictures
• URLs
• sounds
• movies
• and much more.

I just found out about Sizzling Keys, it's to control iTunes, and shows a small window of what's playing
In my opinion, Synergy is better since it shows you a miniature set of controls in the menu bar so you don't need to remember hotkeys. (However, if you WANT to use hotkeys, Synergy supports them too.) It also provides a "Now Playing" pop-up at the start of each new song which can also be summoned via keystroke.

Synergy sounds nice, too bad it's not free :/

Butler
I really don't see why anyone would prefer QuickSilver to Butler. Butler in a near-default state just blows my mind. It's the first thing I install on any machine.

BBedit (or TextMate, depending)
Both are amazing text editors. The former has a greater range of text-modification and generic coding features, the latter has an understanding of projects, code-folding, and the entire league of Ruby on Rails developers using it. I have yet to see a text editor better than either of these on Windows or GUIs in Linux.

XCode
It comes with every Mac, install it from the DVD. The wealth of power tool apps that it comes with are simply incredible. The amount of GUI-aided development you can do in the name of drag-and-dropping is remarkable. Try Quartz Composer and make a screen saver just by doodling about. Really awesome.

Xbench
The first place I go when I'm troubleshooting a Mac or evaluating the speed of a new one. I've used it to base multiple purchase decisions, as sometimes you'll see a certain brand of RAM outperform another.

VoodooPad
Unbelievably efficient Word-meets-Wiki program that I gladly paid for in order to keep a huge smart-linking knowledge base of my coursework.

VirtueDesktops
I rely on having Windows and OS X running at full speed in full screen simultaneously all-day, every day. VirtueDesktops lets me switch between them a half-dozen ways, from keyboard shortcuts, to mouse walls, to tapping my desk, to snapping my fingers.

With 2gb ram (I assume), and Parallels? You find it seamless?

I do, for the most part. I dump 768 to a gig of RAM into my XP bottle and both OSes go full speed (with the odd hiccup on XP) as long as I don't go into an orgiastic media playing frenzy or anything.

2GB RAM and I give Windows about a Gig.

IF YOU RUN PARALLELS, INSTALL PD TWEAKER

This is so not optional. It fixes the very, very wrong caching strategy that Parallels uses. No shit, it changed my Windows installation from sluggish to near-native.

Speaking of parallels, I read that the next patch for it has gone to RC. I guess they haven't abandoned development.

Thanks for this - I'm always looking for things that will get QuickTime and QT Player to play as much as possible. Now if only QT Player (and Front Row) had subtitle file support, I would almost never need anything else. *sigh*

They also haven't abandoned gamers. They are currently working on wrapping the DirectX calls with OpenGL calls so that you can play games in Parallels.

That doesn't mean a whole lot without being able to harness the power of GPUs while in XP, though :(

Abandon MS, use Adium!
Ho-kay. Any reason to why it's better?

EDIT: Oh, and also, what's the best RAR unzipper?

EDIT 2: More questions... :) Azureus vs. Transmissions - which is better?

Can anyone recommend a program that allows you manage multiple itunes libraries and/or have your library on multiple drives?

If you want to set up multiple libraries in iTunes or iPhoto, just hold down the "alt" key while starting up. You will be prompted to create a new library or to choose an existing one.

Thanks for everyone who have responded in this thread, it has helped me the **** out.

What does everyone use for ripping music with a Mac?

There was a browser question earlier, so I'll just dump this-

Camino
http://www.caminobrowser.org/

After debating between toughing it out with Safari or switching over to Firefox or Opera, I was reccommended Camino.

Sooooo freaking nice. My only gripe is that you can't import your Safari bookmarks. Other than that, I haven't had to use any other browser since I've installed it.
