Resident Evil 6 - Review Thread | Activist Reviews and the Hate Patrol Destroy Truth™

Thanks for all the answers, I'm happy you could understand my question.

At least for me, I'm hoping Co-op will be the key to put the "F" in fun. On a side note, I would love if one day they could bring back the Survival Horror where Bullets and Herbs are very important and must be used wisely.

One thing I've noticed is that people that aren't very good at third person shooters are extremely bad at RE6. I think as a season gamer who prefers shooters I was pretty good at avoiding the bullshit scripted damage and operated the camera like a champ, so I probably had a better time with it than most. I think I'll probably enjoy it quite a bit, though admittedly there's a lot of bad design there. 7.5 sounds about right.

I think the Quick Look will be a treasure trove of those moments, hopefully with another "Let the record show" style classic.

Not knowing how to roll on command is pretty ridiculous. Maybe not as ridiculous as not knowing how to slide in Vanquish would be, but up there. I think they were commenting on how the game doesn't teach you stuff, which is a fair criticism I suppose (I'm guessing the game doesn't shove the controls in your face like the demo did), but experimentation should be mandatory for every player.

Even after a shit demo and shit reviews, why do I still want to buy it tonight?
It's the new virus, you've been infected. You ate the Capcom RE6 meat didn't you!!?!! (Hazmats at the ready everyone)

In all seriousness it's more likely your love of the series. I'll be waiting for game of the year edition thing that Capcom will more than likely do. I can wait after playing the demo didn't get me amped for this.

And these reviews, kinda knew it would be like this, with the way previews were written about it prior to release.

Gamekult gave it a 5/10.

Their review tag line is hilarious. "This is not the grade" (talking about the 6 in the title).

They are really harsh in their review too. A bit too much. N64 level graphics? Comparison to the TMNT NES underwater level?

I mean, wow.

Wow these are some polarizing reviews. I was on the fence but they've pushed me to hold off, that's for sure. Canceling my preorder tonight.

I really hate Capcom for their DLC shit this gen, but sorry guys....I love RE6
Its no REmake or a full back to ol'skool RE
But I'm enjoying it like every other RE game since RE4
RE4 was better so far, but Leon's campaign plays like it, but more old RE
Jakes feels like RE4 too, its just Chris's, its like RE5 in crack without the RE4 elements if you know what I mean
Whoever did Leon's campaign though should have done the whole game

lol, yeah I think it's mainly just nostalgia from when the series was good. I will try my best to wait for a price drop, which probably won't take to long.

Huh, watched it now. Video is a good showcase for the "not as awful as the rest of the game" Chris camera (Chris's campaign really is he best, regardless of shootbang). Jeff trolling was awesome. Combat system is great, and it's probably the biggest redeeming feature the game has, can't wait to see if Brad even mentions it in his review (If the roll was beyond him, well). Podcast is going to be awesome.

Hm, are the scores usually split like this between the "unknown" and "popular" sites for games? I haven't really noticed before.

The scores by the high profile sites are very close/similar, but the less known sites give a totally different score.

EDIT: .............they just found out how to roll and don't know how to get up immediately how to get up (don't hold aim). After 12 hours? Okay, that was just bad lol.

You heard Patrick: "The game doesn't tell you how!"

I love Giant Bomb and trust their reviews but they have tastes all over the map and that's a good thing just I know sometimes my taste is not inline with theirs, It doesn't bother me though and They are still my go to site.

Jeff talks like 99% of people in that if he doesn't like something, it fucking sucks.

and "Resident Evil sucks" is like one of his running jokes anyway.

Given the amount of new movements and shit you could do, the game really needed some tutorial level or something....

Agreed, another huge problem the game has is putting a ridiculously intricate combat/control system in a linear, dumbed down, QTE fest and then not even bothering to explain how it works. Capcom really deserve to get blasted for this game.

That's why I'm glad Brad is reviewing and posted in here, because he's the only one of them I usually share opinions with.

With the Giant Bomb guys, at least, they are wrong more often than not with these kinds of comments. "The game doesn't show you how" usually means, "The game didn't force me through a tutorial to use the action, so I missed it."

Is it being knocked down because it's bad or if it's because they went another direction with the series?

These reviews were so expected. I am still getting the game though, but I still expect it to be kind of bad. $45 pre-order from Newegg lessens the blow at least.

It does have a tutorial level. It just doesn't tell you about the new mechanics.

Is it being knocked down because it's bad or if it's because they went another direction with the series?

It's a little bit of both. Most of their points have merit, regardless of the score they give. At least, I find myself agreeing with a lot of the criticisms despite generally liking the game.

I'm NOT an RE super-fan -- the avatar is because I like the "tits" joke in Revelations -- but I am a fan of action games (Vanquish, Bulletstorm and Kid Icarus Uprising being my favorites).

If several demo sessions are any indication, RE6 is mechanically sound in terms of basic movement, camera functionality (once dialed down), inventory management, and running and gunning, stopping and popping, dodging and rolling and sliding and shooting. Giving melee its own dedicated button and governing it with a stamina meter is another smart move. And your co-op partner is actually helpful this time, with AI that keeps it from intrusively finishing every fight.

It sounds like the game's main problem are the QTEs. There are extensive shootout sequences between each of them, which is good, but it sounds like the QTEs result in frustration at times, and create for an uneven stop-and-go experience at others.

The other major flaw appears to be a simple matter of pacing, where the game apparently settles into dry spells of derivative gameplay. I do suspect people's mileage will vary in this respect: Your combat and mobility options have been expanded here to the point where you can create your own fun by simply throwing yourself into the thick of things with every trick at your disposal, from the all-new quick-shots and counters to dodging, rolling, sliding and shoulder-checking.

In other words, it's the difference between playing Vanquish as a cover-based shooter, picking your shots, or rocket-boosting into each and every battle. It's all in how you play.

Also, side note, seems weird for Kill Screen to criticize the plot coherence on grounds such as Leon boarding a flight after "murdering" the president (the president was a zombie, and it was in self-defense) and needing to find cranks to progress (a staple of -many- videogames). The game appears to be soap operatic in many respects, and I don't think we ought to take it as seriously as it takes itself. At least the voice acting is bearable now.

Patrick Klepek: There are people out there who like this game. There's 9s and 8s for it.
Jeff Gerstmann: Those are two different things.

DAMN

Yeah saving my money for next week now. Getting both X-COM and Dishonored instead of just Dishonored.

Is it being knocked down because it's bad or if it's because they went another direction with the series?

After reading the reviews, it's both.

Actually if it wasn't for some gaffers in the demo thread I would have had a hard time figuring out most of these controls.

How should I know you can turn 180º while slinding? It dosn't need to be a tutorial, a full list that includes all the possible movements should be there.

I'm going to blame those that didn't buy Revelations. Best RE game in many years. Alright, if I'm honest the only one to blame is Capcom.
I bought Revelaitons and it was mediocre at best. Sold it after I was done. Resident Evil has just been shitty all year. Damnation, Revelaitons, ORC, Retribution, 6, fuck this series.

I discovered this by accident, and was able to do it at will after I figured out what I did. Just takes some messing around. Didn't even take me that long.

Dark Souls doesn't tell you how to not die. =P

Notice how the majority of the positive reviews are from print media.

Notice how some aren't.

The best it does is show you the control layout. Capcom have tried to make the entire game more user friendly (and failed) and then made controling the characters more complicated.

Print needs money hats from positive reviews, and websites need hits from negative ones.

Yes

It's interesting that Shoemaker prefers the Chris chapter over Leon's. I actively hated Chris' part of the most recent demo.

And this is why people play before outright GAME SUCKS. Everybody has their own tastes and opinions. Just because a reviewer feels some way about a game doesn't mean you will.

Reviews can be fun to watch, but I don't always agree with them. Some say Call of Duty is awesome. Do I think it is? Not really. Everybody can play that game.
