Play on Impossible a bit and you'll feel a lot better about Classic Ironman
I've tried Impossible/Ironman. No fun to be derived from that mode whatsoever unless you are masochistic.
Happened to me when I tried to rocket a cyberdisc that was out of visual range (I had moved my scout out of the way, and it hadn't noticed us yet). My heavy said something like 'there's soemthing wrong with the guidance system' and it flew way off course blowing up some trees.
Such a thing...
I think I'll go play Dishonored and classic X-Com.
This right here is what I'm worried about. I haven't lost anybody in ages, but there's always that CHANCE that it could go horribly wrong. The final mission isn't even that bad, I just want to make sure that I can recover from a wipe if I have to. But just training up new guys is a risk now because of how dangerous the final enemy types are.
This game is too easy on normal. I'm going to start over on Classic. No Ironman, though. Too frustrating.
The most important thing when it comes to surviving missions is to stick together. Everybody covers everybody. Don't spread out too thin and don't bunch up behind the same cover, either. And snipers become absolute death dealers once you get that perk that eliminates their reaction shot penalty.

I like making them walk right into range of my close combat specialist assault.
You can hit em with Mind Fray twice too, or if you want overkill try a support with combat drugs and a combat stim.

Is it a classic/ironman run? You should be able to bounce back from it if you have the panic levels under control.
Had the same happening to me aswell 2 missons in a row but i was able to come back with a full squaddie group.

Yup, as long as you keep 'em alive of course. But at least that is up to you, and not scripting.

One of the benefits to taking WAY too long to replace all my crappy old low-will non-psychic Colonels is that if my new squad wipes, I still got the old mainstays that are very capable of killing aliens. I've been capturing some extra weapons here and there too, so once I take down this last supply barge I'll have the raw materials to bounce back from a final mission screwup.
Which is pretty unlikely because from what I can tell based on youtube vids, the final mission is always the same. I did notice the alien base was very different on my second run though...is it random, or are there just multiple maps?

Well damn. I was just starting to shake off the shackles of the tutorials after 3 hours last night. Maybe I should start over now that I have a better basic understanding of the game, especially if I don't have to go through all of the tutorial stuff again.
It is, and yeah, you're right. I just need to take it slow for a while, chase after some small or medium UFOs to build up a new squad. I'm just too demoralised right now to bother though.
I'm having a lot of troubles with my PS3 copy of the game as well. Hope this stuff gets fixed.
I had half a mission go ALL fog of war on me and couldn't see anything, last night my screen just went blue and froze up.
... still, love the game. I was starving for some Xcom.

I nearly bought the PS3 version, but switched to PC at the last minute, because the complete lack of PS3 footage anywhere was a huge red flag and the PSU review said there were frame rate problems.
Yup, even with all the problems and rush to production, it's still my game of the year. I just fear I'll have to postpone my second playthrough till a patch is submitted. Oh well, backlog here I come. Been meaning to get around to fist of the north star:ken's rage anywho.

Still waiting for the S.H.I.V plasma project to finish up, and considering investing in some plasma pistols. Other than that, missions have become quite easy. And the construction of the Gollop Chamber is done. Feels good man.
btw, I just let one of the UFO's escape, and right after that a huge alien ship appeared. I was kinda worried at first, thing was huge. But when my Firestorm engaged it, it was downed pretty quickly.

Operation Cryptic Witch is where my heavy mama first used her psi powers. 
I'm definitely over the hump in classic. Have plasma weapons, getting third tier armor, base is almost filled out, panic levels are low, and I don't even lose rookies on missions. I know there are types of enemies I haven't faced, but I think I'll do okay.

On an escort mission on Classic Ironman. Doing good up until I begin to pull back after grabbing the target. A sectoid gets a lucky crit on my support, causing MASS FUCKING HYSTERIA, ending with my Shotgun Assault deciding to blame the VIP for their comrades death and plugging him in the head.

Fixed that for you. Enjoy grinding the RNG and playing overwatch spam until you get a good first month that doesn't have some horrible narrow, low-cover shootout map, bomb disposal, and (not or) triple pack aggro, all of which are virtually unwinnable in Impossible.
Impossible is not fun.

It's kind of a self fulfilling prophecy for me. I was giving it to squaddies and putting them just a little bit too close to the enemies.
Nope, sadly. I wanted to name mine "Shagohod".
Apart from panicking enemies they are all pretty good. Mindcontrol works well on some enemies (like mutons) the squad shield is really usefull in smaller maps and the will boost is great support if you have multiple psy's in your squad.

My save JUST started doing this, I'm late game about October(?) and I've had two freezes in about three missions. Starting to get annoying.
I've also had the squares for the skills go completely blank but retain their colour. Had to restart the game to fix it.
It worked almost every time I tried on Normal. Ethereals are, naturally, highly resistant against it. I imagine Sectoid Commanders are too.
didn't people find a way to change the name pools of regular soldiers? I bet you could do the same for interceptors and SHIVs.
Certain enemy types are immune or nearly so (berserkers are usually around 50%, chryssalids I've never seen over 15%), but Mutons/Heavy Floaters are super weak to it and those are what you really want anyways. If you've got even halfway decent Will and/or Will boosting gear you'll often have 100% chance.
On a related note, I had a particularly stupid squaddie panic on me when one of my MC'ed Muton Elites got blown up. The guy's a Major now, and psionic, so I hope he's gotten over his soft spot for aliens.

First half of the game was kinda hard, and sometimes a bit frusty...but during the second part were you got all kind of insane upgraded weapons and stuff its kinda boring. I had 3 snipers in my team and they almost have 100% hit + 90% crit doing 10-15 dmg ?

It's the same as the original, these games have sort of an inverted difficulty curve and are supposed to as at some point you have turned the tide against the aliens.
Happens to everybody, I see it brought up all the time.
Yeah logical i guess, i only played a bit terror from the deep a long time ago, so i didnt knew it was kinda the same as in the original.
