It's worth it to only have to maintain and carry one device.
This.

The dumb + touch combo doesn't work if you want anything more than gaming.

The whole point of a smartphone is to carry one device that can be used for almost anything on the go. The above combo defeats the whole purpose of that. You won't even have 3G so can't use 90% of the apps.

No dumber than paying 100+ dollars a month for cell service with stupidly low restrictions on data.

Currently paying 31EUR a month with 10 gigs of data with for a iPhone 5.
That's cheaper than the iPhone 3GS contract I had still going from two years ago, feels good man.

I'd argue it's not. Especially for women with a purse or guys that dont wear skinny jeans. My cell service is 90 dollars a year, no contract. I'll gladly pay that over 2400+ every two years on a contract. It's an easy decision for me since talking on the phone is one of the least important aspects of a smartphone to me. Mainly because voice clarity is still so awful. Convenience can be a good thing, but not when it carries an extra 2000+ dollar commitment. Personal opinion.

Ok, but now you don't have any mobile data, so you have to look for wifi hotspots to do anything. What if you want to listen to Pandora while driving, or use GPS, or check your email in a park?

You're saving money, sure. Personally, I'd rather pay and not carry two devices that combined offer less functionality.

I preload/cache hours of Pandora(which I'd also do on a cellphone since it wouldnt be wasting the incredibly limited data). As far as mobile data, I live in Seattle. Tons of free Wifi, but even without it, I use the Tracfone if I need to send/receive a text etc. Otherwise I just wait a few minutes until I get to where I'm going. The convenience of checking sports scores/tweeting etc isn't worth 2000+ dollars and a contract to me. No biggie. And if it were important, I'd simply get a cheap wifi tablet and pay 25 bucks a month for 4G without a contract. As for GPS, it came with my car. I certainly wouldnt use Apple's lame effort at Maps.

iPad Mini + jailbroken iPhone tethering = MOBILE BLISS

It was a decent arrangement with my 11-inch Air, but the battery life on that thing is not even close to what I really need.

I'll believe the price after Apple tells us. Too many sites are saying different things. I wonder how the stock price will be affected by the announcement and subsequent release of the iPad Mini though. Wasn't expecting the freefall it's been in since iPhone 5 was announced and released.

I have a discoloring issue with my iPad 3 that Ive never done anything about. If the rumors are true and the 3 gets a refresh, will I be able to walk into the store, bitch about the coloring issue, and walk out with a refresh model? Id even be willing to put a little money on top...

Is the warranty period on the iPad 3 a year or three months? That will tell you what you can expect from Apple support.

probably not. they definitely won't accept money for an "upgrade".

chances are they'll have plenty of dedicated replacement stock of existing models for warranty replacements for a long time.

You'll likely get a refurb new iPad at this point.

My cell service for my iPhone is nz$228 (eh, let's say us$170) per year and I get nominal data to use per month. ;) save money Nd use iPhone! Win! Well, I have o pay full retail fr phone...,

iPad had better only get the Lightning connector. I'm not ready to go from my 3rd-gen to a 4th gen until next year (at which point, IGZO, A6X, return to better battery life, and thin new industrial design plz).

Why is iBooks missing books that are on the Kindle store?

Annoying.

As others have said, exclusives, allowing people to self-publish, and even publishing books themselves. Their prices are also better than the competition a lot of the time, and they allow users to loan books, and they lend books to Prime members. iBooks is OK, but it can't compete with Amazon.

Too bad I have to be such a UI whore, iBooks is my dame and I'm going to stick with her.

And the books I want to buy are older and some of the publisher's books on thr store so it doesn't make much sense that's an exclusivity thing.

You can always load ePub files from other stores into iBooks. I know DRM free stuff works in it (like Project Gutenberg), but I have not tested Nook or Google Books yet.

Oh :(

$1700 13" laptop with a 30" display resolution... ... ... and it doesn't have a dedicated GPU? Sorry, no thanks, Apple. 13" MacBook Air for me, I guess. Lame.

you mean like this?

I don't think you know how pricing works on these kinds of high-end ultrabooks.

No, an extra fee to your carrier. :)

I don't pay a dime to use Personal Hotspot.

Chances are that you also don't have Unlimited data like we do either, though. Unless you're with t-mobile, maybe?

Which US carriers allow free hotspot? I noticed on my wife's Verizon iPhone 5 that you have to pay for it. I thought they had to make it free now?

I wasn't aware that any that carry the iPhone do, but if I had to guess I'd say T-Mobile. I don't believe any offer it with an unlimited plan.

You picked a good looking whore with a smelly undercarriage. Maybe Apple will wash her for you. Soon hopefully. The big appeal of Amazon to me other than what we already listed is the one obvious advantage they have - their books work on pretty much every single device. At least devices with a Kindle app.

Or he's going with the infinitely cheaper option of dumbphone + Touch.

This. Best of both worlds in my opinion. I'm always around WI-FI (home + work + some restaurants/fast food) and I have a dumb phone that doesn't cost me anything. Free texting on the Touch and I talk on the phone maybe an hour a month.

It's not worth it at all to spend $1200 a year because I can't find an extra pocket. lulz
I throw my tiny dumb phone in my vest pocket (I ride a motorcycle) and my iPod Touch in my pants pocket. The Touch gets used infinitely more than the phone.

no way. $50 cheaper than the iPod touch? no way

doesn't mean much.

think about it. 8Gb vs 32 GB. retina screen vs 163 ppi screen. the ipad mini will have its own compromises. plus the ipod touch carries a slight premium for being a pocketable item instead of something a bit less easy to carry around.

I've said it before in here and I'm confident Apple can hit $250 and still get their fat 40% margins. And, if we want to look at a possibly similar example, Apple already charges 50 bucks more for an unlocked 16GB iphone 5 than a 16 GB iPad 3 with LTE...

Yep. Knew about the ePub thing.

And I meant not modern by older. One book is from 2002.
But there are other books from the same publisher, so it doesn't make any sense.

I hope. A fool's hope...

Well damn people actually buy from iBooks
I know I'm a monster.
