The screen is 4 times the resolution, but the device only has ~2x the GPU grunt.
Its stupid because they have the app built but no one has turned it on. The tablet scene still sucks tho. All the recommended tablet apps in the store are games which kind of sums things up.
I didn't watch the conference. So besides the mini they also showed off a new iPad? Is it called a 4 or is it just new new iPad. The retina display isn't New is it?

As an outsider looking in (I don't own any tablet or Android device, only the iphone 4S), I was waiting for this event to decide between the Ipad Mini and the Nexus 7.
In the end, I'm holding out on both (I consider the bigger ipads too big and heavy).
I do like the iOS apps more from what I have seen, even though I want to explore the Android space (maybe with a Galaxy phone). I am not paying more than $250 unless the tablet is vastly superior, and is not missing simple upgrades already out there in the market.
By next year this time, I assume Google will have upgraded the Nexus 7, and maybe Apple is a few ipad Minis deep (errr it's a joke, don't kill me Apple fans).

Thu don't number the iPads anymore. They just announced the 4th gen iPad. Retina is not new, it's a spec bump and the new lightning connector. Pricing is the same as always.

Yes, but I'm biased because that's what I'm going to do. Gonna throw the 2 on eBay of Craigslist and get the 4. I use the iPad too much to sit two gens behind.
Yes, the showed a new iPad. 4th Generation iPad, but I think it's still called The new iPad. It's 2x the CPU/GPU of the iPad 3 (the previous new iPad). They are still selling the 2. So it's 2, mini, or new 4th Gen iPad now. It has lightning port, HD front facing cam and faster CPU/GPU. (no, retina is not new, 3 had that). Oh, might have an additional speaker too?

And hmm... Can't upgrade ram myself on the 21.5in version if the Mac Blog is correct... But 8GB is enough to last for at least 2 years anyways.

Going with 21.5in myself, 8GB ram is more then enough for me as I pretty much do the most basic stuff
Of course it does - generally.
But if a dedicated device offers an advantage over an all-in-one, and you use that feature enough, then it becomes better value to buy the dedicated device.
Kindle is the perfect example of that. You can use the kinde app on iPad, but if you read a lot it's absolutely worth getting an e-ink device

Is it actually thinner though? I didn't get a chance to see the conference, I hear the edges are a lot thinner but is the overall dimension smaller? I think it looks shitty with the weird bubble design it has now.

With the quick refresh on the iPad, I can see why they stopped explicitly numbering them. I think it puts it more in line with their computers than their other mobile devices.

This isn't the iPad 4, this is the iPad 3 with some spec boosts. Just like the MacBook gets occasionally.

Well, if you sold it yesterday you would have got $450~$500 but today you will get a $100 less than that, and by March you will get a lot less than that. If it were a traditional cycle most will only be effectively paying only $50 to upgrade instead of the $150+ they have to pay now.

apple for a while have done upgrades in 12+ month cycles, but to vastly improve the ipad 3 in only 7 months is a burn no matter which way you look at it. It's still a good ipad but come on, 7 months! seven!
I don't blame you. I would thinking anyone that got one in the last 30 days would probably do the same thing. I got mine at launch, 7 months ago, so I'll have mine until the next one.

The more I think about it, I think the iPad Mini might be my first tablet. I've been wanting to get a tablet for a while now and trying to decide between 7" models and full 10" models and here comes along a perfect looking medium. It is a bit expensive for a smaller tablet, but I understand you have to pay for quality. I will be getting a 32GB version. I just hope they don't sell out during the pre-order phase like the iPhone 5 did. I can't get one till November 5th or 6th.
I think its just expectations and jealousy really. Folks expected a yearly refresh, and now only 6 months later, they will see the same games and some apps running faster then theirs.
13" Retina pro ends up being just a really fat/heavy/expensive Macbook Air with a high res screen? Dual core with integrated graphics? Err....

The retina Macbook pro looks really cool, but I think when I get a laptop it'll be the MBA 2012. Price is just a bit much for me. I'll certainly be interested years down the line when they're more common in everything and the price is reasonable.

Apple's release schedule for tablets/phones has so far guaranteed that you would have a whole year of being owning the best product out there, and at least two years of being close. I think that people underestimate how important that is.

1) Get Mac Mini (server) now, wait for either retina iMac, next gen retina MacBook Pro, or new Mac Pro next year- whatever comes first
2) Upgrade PC with new mobo, CPU, and RAM
3) Wait for the iPad 4
4) Once retina iMac/next gen retina Macbook Pro/new Mac Pro/ arrives, use Mac Mini as a home server
All in all, pretty happy with today's announcements. About what I expected.

My iPad 3 has always hitched slightly more than my iPad 2 did. It was noticeable within seconds of taking it out of the box (swiping to the 'search' screen is marginally less smooth than on iPad 2, for example).
But in normal use, it never feels 'slow'.
