Not if you don't want black bars.
lol

I don't like Apple, but after todays event I dislike them even more. The worst part are the Apple enthousiasts, wow.
what is this?

So did Apple ever clarify their statement that the iPad Mini was not just a shrunken down iPad?

I thought they did?
Right after mentioning that didn't they talk about the different construction (bezel proportions, material, back) and camera (5mp) compared to it's iPad 2 big brother?

Price wise (with a 179 dollar 3G Paperwhite), she was hoping for a 200-250 mini. At 329 it doesn't make sense as a device she'll mainly just read on.

That never made sense.
If you want to read, get Paperwhite.
If she actually wants to use the other features, web, apps, etc. Then a real tablet is the way to go.

Whats up with the no new itunes thing. We knows its coming on october. Any hope they stealth launch it later today?

No, I'm right. His argument is that NOBODY looking to buy a 7" tablet is doing it because they like the form factor.

My argument is that many do buy a 7" because they in fact DO want that form factor. I'm sure many buy because of the price, and my argument makes room for them too. His is a hyperbolic, absolute and unreasonable argument; mine is not. Not everyone buying a 7" tablet is buying because it's cheap. Period.

I see. Having upgraded 1-->3, I haven't had any such issues.

No comment on rotating in Netflix; I don't rotate in Netflix.

I bought the Nexus 7 primarily for form factor. I wanted tablet features on a portable device that I could also use as my e-reader. 10" was too big for that.

I'm not saying that NOBODY wants the 7" form factor, that'd be like saying that NOBODY wants an Android device over an iDevice. What I'm saying is that the price difference is the reason the 7" form factor exists rather than the form factor itself.

I bought an ipad and ipad 2 day 1 (or close to day 1) and multiple iphones over the years because they appeared to be good value for the tech offered - at 329 the value for an ipad mini just isn't there for me. I was hoping to turn them into some touchscreen controls for my various HT equipment throughout the house with irule but that won't be happening at that price. Oh well..

I skipped the ipad 3 model - and might bite on the ipad 4

Can somebody enlighten me on what you can use 1600p on a 13 inch display for? even HD movies are only 1080p...
The point of Retina isn't just to fit more stuff on the screen, but to use more pixels to display normal sized stuff too. Like the 15" model, it's unlikely that 2560x1600 will actually be a display option.

But who didn't see it coming?

iPad 2 was a clear step up from iPad in terms of performance. I mean unarguably iPad 1 was pretty crappy in terms of responsiveness and how it was sluggish overall. iPad2 completely remedied that.

I felt the iPad3...err third gen iPad was like in between iPad 1 and iPad 2 performance wise due to that much higher resolution. The iPad4 is to the iPad 3 as the iPad 2 was to the iPad1.

What the hell... ipad 3 is so much better than the 2. As for the comparison between 4 and 3, what are you basing that off of?

Beat Gazell at their own game. Put my 32gb iPad in cart for 400 the second it was announced. It's now down to 250 :eek

I fully anticipated that the Mini would replace 2 in the lineup tho.

iPad Mini - iPad 4th gen

would be a better lineup.

Nice to see mac mini and iMac finally get a refresh. Apple has refreshed almost their entire product line in the past 2 months, and the iPad mini release is perfect timing for christmas. I personally have no desire to get the iPad mini, I cant justify having 2 iPads so it would have to be a replacement for my current iPad 3 but I prefer a full size iPad. However I can see this product being pretty popular with kids and people who haven't got a tablet yet. It is expensive when compared to its competition but when you look at apples product lineup and their own prices it makes sense. It was always highly unlikely it'd be the same price or cheaper than the iPod touch, so its slightly more than that but still cheaper than the entry level full size iPad. Its probably going to be on every kids christmas list this year

so is Amazon/newegg/retailers going to be selling new iPad 3s for cheap? I don't want a refurb but it would be mighty tempting for $400 or so

price is way too high. I guess if you start high you can always come down but I think it needs to be between $249-$299 if they are going to make a serious push into making the mini the default education tablet

The iPad 3 was underpowered from the off... the only improvement was in GPU performance. In real world use it was actually slower than the iPad 2.

The iMacs are usually fairly priced (back then at least). I actually did the math and to get a 27" IPS panel and the same specs on a PC comes out to about the same price. Maybe a $50-100 difference. Not to mention the iMac is sexy as hell and there isn't a giant tower to put anywhere.

it's a shame that misinformed presumptions that high spec pcs require giant towers have sabotaged your purchase decisions.

The UK 13" Retina Macbook Pro prices are insane.

Including the cost of a return flight, it's cheaper to fly to Hong Kong and buy one there than it is to buy one here in the UK.

The UK Apple tax sucks.

I can't say that's been my experience at all. But it doesn't matter, I guess, since I'm getting the 4.

After their $199 iPod touch launch 1 month ago, they really had no where to go.They should have launched the iPod touch at $179 and this at $279.

I think $299 for the mini would make a huge difference. Having a price "under $300" would likely create an irrational feeling that it was a better deal than the $30 makes. These will still sell like crazy. I never buy first gen Apple hardware, and this is a good example for that. Next gen iPad mini will likely be much much better.

Pointed this out to a friend, but Logitech has this remote at $349 :

Given quite a lot of modern Home Theater equipment is wifi enabled, an iPad mini with the proper apps may make for a good master remote control.

Personally, most if not all of my HT stuff can be controlled via an app on the appstore already.

I've tried out remote apps but I still hate having to exclusively use a touch screen to control my home theater.
