TBH when peopel overreact to very innocuous statements that most people wouldn't even pick up on doesn't help. There is a guy in one of my classes that goes on the attack CONSTANTLY on perceived racism by the white kids in our class (the class is southern US lit). I think he makes a new actual racist every day.......

(of course not talking about truly blatant racism.....but I don't really believe that its as common as you say)

I found the test annoying because the switching really confused me, so I'd press the wrong key for Obama because I had associated Obama with the right side and vice versa. And I felt like there were often multiple strings in a row of left or right, and then I'd go faster assuming the pattern would hold and get it wrong.

Edit: Apparently, some people are getting tests where it's specifically about politics, and others are getting tests specifically about implicit racism (what I got), so I don't know if everyone will really get the results they want.

Took the test. Half my test was about politics, and half was about implicit racism.

The debriefing at the end said "Your data suggest a slight implicit preference for Black People compared to White People."

Interesting. Could be because at the time of taking this test white people are disappointing me with the election and this thread :P

If those results are just from the key test thing where you press K or D, I'm not sure I put much stock in that. My brain couldn't switch the activities between each other very easily and I fucked up the second time around.
 
I don't find anything bad with the poll. I mean obviously racism is bad. But it's not like the racism wasn't there before. It's just now it's being identified. Can't fix a problem until you admit there is one...

As long as people generalize and stereotype, racism/discrimination will always exist. If it's not race in the future it will be something else.

Guess I should have been faster on dem black faces. Honestly, I wasn't sure I was doing the test right because it seemed to keep giving me the same pictures in the same order, and I wasn't attempting to break any speed records.

bad test is bad, imo. all that part of the test tested was how fast my brain could process "good" --> k with "bad" --> d. I never had an issue with one race vs another. It was basically, "okay black people are k this time, right? okay...black face, so k....that's a white face so d this time..."success" is k...black face k..."

You know the times when it was listed

"Black or Good" and "White or Bad" and you messed up one or two times by trying to slot in the opposite? And where you did it slightly faster or with fewer mistakes when it was the other way around? That was the test.
 
The world has always been full of hate and it's still going on now. Its not just against black people. Go to asia., africa or the middle east and see the vitriloic hatred they have amongst each other, due to religion,caste,skin colour, tribe or any other silly reason they come up with to divide themselves.

But fuck it, the world Keeps turning and we still somehow multiply and avoid slaughtering each other entirely.thats something right?

My background: Military brat, have only been living in the US for 6 years. Mixed race.

I'm not at all surprised by my results. My world view was sculpted quite differently than the average American's (not to say there isn't racism in the rest of the world). Though on the picture test, I didn't go fast at all. I took my time since mostly as a programmer...I was trying to find a pattern and guess what image would come next lol.
 
The important point to stress is explicit. That high number doesn't actually account for all forms of racism. A study testing a more subtle form of racism showed that it persisted over time (I think the period of time was the ten years from 1989 to 99). The participants in that sample were college students, who are generally a more liberal group.

Edit: Though, I'm mildly surprised about this. Most self-report studies had been showing a decline in explicit prejudice against minorities.

It's all thanks to Obama that the explicit is going up probably. They feel truly threatened now.
 
I'd be interested in a study that quantified the number of people who:

- plan to vote Romney, but say they are voting Obama when in groups of people so as not to appear racist

I grew up in a REALLY white and conservative area when I was a kid. My family was always incredibly liberal, though. I like to think of myself as seeing all races equally, but maybe I still have some subconscious preference towards the people I went to school with and hung out around. The end part of the test was really stupid, though.

Well pretty much if you say, imply, or allude to anything negative about the civil rights movement.

If you say......"The civil right movement was a great example of the success of non violent protests. The more extreme and violent segments of the movement did not produce nearly the results". Then you are a racist for slandering black violent protesters. We read a story about a black man who murdered his white employer after being laid off and if you didn't give glowing praise over him "fighting the system" you are a racist.

Doesn't help that the professor is 80 and has 0 control.

No, that didn't happen to me. I made no mistakes. The only challenge was remembering which was associated with K and which was associated with D in a given round. Not whether one was associated with "good" or "bad". It wasn't set up well enough to test exclusively for bias as it purports to want to do.

no, what that part wanted to do was associate "good" or "bad" with the color of faces that flashed on the screen. it didn't. it tested how well I could remember that black/white was supposed to be "K" in a given round. No more, no less.

Fucking seriously. My fiancee's sister goes to school in Alabama and she swears up and down she encounters more outright racism being a Black woman in Long Island than she does in Alabama. Same with my Mother. She taught at a white school in Georgia in the 70's and she said it was FAR better than when she started teaching in Brooklyn in the 80's.
 
Well both those tests I took(one was famous black and white people and the other was the race test) gave me a surprising result.

As a white guy who grew up in Utah(which is only around one percent black I believe) I was expecting to have a slight preference towards whites. Like others have said those tests mixing and matching really threw me off a few times. Though that might of been the point.

that depends on why you were thrown off. If it was because of the words and faces, then yes that was the point. if it was simply which letter belonged to which faces in a given round, then it wasn't.
