It's not as bad as that hyperbole-laced post, but its pretty fucking terrible.
At least it's visually pleasing, right?
;_;

Just trying to stay positive. I want to like Prometheus so much, but rewatching the movie and actually thinking about it, the writing and the actions of the characters make it kinda hard, yeah.

It looks good, it's just the other stuff bothers me too much to give it a rewatch.

But I mean, the movie is shit, so I'd actually be more bemused if the reaction was "holy shit the greatest sci-fi since the original Alien, restored my faith in the medium"

It's bad, but it's not "almost lost faith in the medium" bad. That's ridiculous. In fact, Prometheus is very fixable, even if you kept the same plot structure. That's not the kind of movie that should cause the kind of hyperbole seen on GAF.

Sometimes I think people haven't seen enough truly awful movies.

Yeah, that's quite a hyperbole and by no means it is one of the worst anything, but it is terrible.

What are the things you consider fixable?

to me a lot of Prometheus' problems are in sequencing and editing. Truly, some simple organizational skills would have bumped it up.

after that what bugged me most were the paper-thin characters, but saying "flesh out the characters" isn't exactly a constructive fix suggestion because that's a huge difficult step.

Prometheus was pretty terrible. Even without the weight of the Alien franchise it's poor, really poor.

I just found out there won't be a director's cut today actually, I'd really hoped we'd see one.

I'm almost 100% sure the reaction would have been positive toward Prometheus had there been better characterization through introductions / idle conversation to flesh out the archetypes, and had they acted / reacted more like real people to all the crazy happening around them. Even if you kept the framework of the script the same, it would've been a much less frustrating movie. Then, at least, people would be speculating about the narrative itself instead of why character X did or didn't do Y when Z happened.

Just go back and read reactions from the spoiler thread. Nearly every criticism had to do with the characters not acting like people, and the movie going from big events / reveals straight into the next scene with no followup.

The bigest problem with Prometheus for me was that all the characters were irrational dumbfucks.

Pretty much.

But I don't think that can be done without having to change a lot.

But I don't think that can be done without having to change a lot.

You'd have to change dialogue, and rearrange some scenes, but even if they didn't answer one more question the audience is left with, I still think it would've been regarded more positively.
Dude pets an alien, and the guy mapping the caves got lost.
C'mon. It doesn't take much to fix two instances like that. The problem is that the movie is littered with those questionable moments.

On a Herzhog binge.

Watched Into the Abyss, Cave of Forgotten dreams and Grizzly Man. Loved them all, CoFD was the least liked.

I loved Bad Lieutenant, little did I know this guy makes the best documentaries.

Those scenes you mention should have to be totally scrapped or changed to work.
Maybe have the alien snake just attacking them instead of them acting like morons
.

I don't mind movies that leave questions, it how badly executed things are that annoys me. It bothered me because the movie was taking itself seriously, it made me care even less about it.

There are no good Moore Bond movies.

I remember paying full price for the Bond collection when it came out on DVD, then watching my first Roger Moore Bond flick and going "oops".

Felt like such a waste of money when I realized a significant chunk of those movies are bad.

I was obviously overreacting, guys.

But seriously, I can write an entire book on how many aspects of the film were awful.

Such an excellent premise gone to waste.

. We're not in the 80s anymore either, why have so many disposable characters? Though this is more of a nitpick.

That's the issue, the crew was still very much a monster movie style "dumb people gonna get killed off" group even though Prometheus was attempting to be a smart big budget sci-fi movie. With a little tuning it could've been a good sci-fi action/thriller in the vein of Alien/Aliens with a narrative thread interesting enough to carry it through a sequel. There's no way to "fix" the movie so that it's becomes serious, intellectually stimulating sci-fi without totally reworking the script, but as is, they could've patched it up to become an enjoyable movie, at the very least.

I finally watched 2001: A Space Odyssey last night. I thought it was fantastic, though I didn't really understand the final act. I could imagine that movie was mindblowing to see when it first came out.

why did you like CoFD the least?

also you should go the other way through his works

As a huge fan of Tintin comics growing up, the movie did not do much beside boring me.

I didn't finish it though, so I'll admit my opinion is to be taken with a hefty dose of salt.

Phantom Of Liberty: 6/10. Someone on Critiker said it was a lot like a sketch comedy show, which I thought was pretty apt. Some segments were clever, some were not.
El: 7/10. The main guy was almost cartoonish in his jealousy, kind of took me out of it a few times since I'm such a laid back dude. I was like chill man be cool.
Tristana: 6/10. I liked this more the first time when it was called El.
The Milky Way: 7/10. More sketch comedy, but a really neat premise wrapped around the thing.
Day Of Wrath: 9/10. Very slow with heavy religious themes, not much different from anything else I've seen from Dreyer, which is probably why I like it so much. Similar to my love for Malick or Tarkovsky who just kind of make one big long movie over the course of their lives. I think Gertrud is the only major one I have left. Oh and I went back and watched Vampyr again to make sure I still don't think it's that great and I don't.
Le Doulos: 81/0. So fucking cool.
Vera Drake: 9/10. Subtitles: ON. I don't know what it is about Mike Leigh's stuff, I can never understand wtf anyone is saying. I'm probably over rating this, the story is pretty straight forward, but he does old people really well. Imelda Staunton was a treat.
Akira Kurosawa's Dreams: 6/10. Again, like sketch comedy. Except no is laughing and we're all going to die. Some good some bad, Scorsese popping up as Van Gough was wtf awesome.
Rhapsody In August: 7/10. I mean objectively this is pretty bad. Terrible child actors, ridiculous watashi wa Richard Gere desu, and heavy handed explicit exposition. But I was genuinely moved a few times. Like to tears moved, so fuck you it gets a 7.

Does anyone know if the version of Baraka that comes with the duo pack version of Samsara is the same disc as was already released? If so, I'll just get the bluray/dvd pack, but if it's a new master, or has new bonus stuff I'll get the two pack.

i sent high hopes back to netflix cause it had no subtitles

totally agree about him doing old people well.. another year has the best old couple

Add me to the Tin Tin hate list. Huge fan of the comics and cartoons back in the day, and they completely got the character of Tin Tin wrong as far as I'm concerned. It looked stunning, but I was annoyed and bored out of my mind watching it.

Logan's Run - 3/5 - love the imaginative premise and 70's futuristic setting. Michael York is good in the lead role, but the story starts to unravel badly in the final third. Still, a fun and campy science-fiction film I found perfectly suited to a lazy Sunday.

I watched Logan's Run on a lazy Sunday earlier this year, and thought the same. But just the other day I saw the poster and there was part of my mind that thought "man, I love that movie". Which surprised me, because I didn't think I did. There's something endearing about it, in all it's campiness.

enjoyed this in the theater and enjoyed it on dvd

The Hobbit - 6/10. Mostly boring and padded-out, lot of slapstick humor that falls short, never really finds a rhythm or feels like more than set-up for the sequels. It has it's moments though, the Game of Riddles section(and the action sequence right after it) are fantastic, some of my favorite scenes of any movie this year.

The 48fps tech is terrible, though. You never get used to it, because every 10 minutes something else reminds you that it's 48fps. There's a lot of dark interior stuff, than BAM big outdoors with Bilbo Baggins cranked up to Benny Hill speeds. There's a lot of practical effects and sets, and then WHOA HEY CGI everywhere, and good lord the things 48fps does to CGI should be illegal in most counties. Somebody said it looks like that early CGI from the Mary Poppins-era of filmmaking where it's kinda floating and pasted-on, and that's exactly it. It looks incredibly phony.

The sets seem more tactile, physical and the footage seems more, well, "real". For some, this is worth cheering. The realer the better! Personally, I couldn't stand it for The Hobbit, a fantasy adventure with all the mystic and well, fantasy, robbed from it. Maybe James Cameron can use it for his nature documentary of Pandora, but here it just felt wrong.

And it's still using movie-world lighting. I think it's gonna be a long time before they relearn how to actually shoot in 48fps to make up for the increased tactile realism, because the artificial obviously man-made lighting constantly interferes with the increased framerate.

Maybe eventually it gets good. Maybe the filmmakers learn how to light these things, and work out the kinks, and improve the CGI, and maybe get a proper subject matter for the framerate, but as of now, I thought it was a complete bust. Woe be to the poor people who see the first shaky-cam 48fps movie.

Yup. And they got Haddock's voice wrong. I'll easily admit that no movie adaptation could ever satisfy me though.

(Tintin is a single word you heathen).

Cabin in the Woods - 4 out of 5

Really enjoyable horror movie. I was more creeped out by the idea
of this organization of scientists and other professionals drugging people and setting up a closed environment so that the cast could die off
more so than the monsters themselves... Although, the
giant spider
was really fucked up.

The Thing (2011) - 4 out of 5

Why do people hate this movie? It's almost a remake of the original. I guess you could argue it's not necessary when you can watch the original (which is excellent) but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy this one. I prefer the original cast. I prefer the original film in general. That said this was still really good. Loved the mosnter designs. Usually not a fan of CG over real props, but they aliens looked pretty fucking cool.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (2011) - 3 out of 5

Pretty enjoyable... Never watched the original all the way. I skipped through parts when I first began to use Netflix. Don't know if I'll bother to watch it all the way through now because I don't think it can be better than this remake. It looks better and you have Daniel Craig.
That scene where Lizabeth tattooed the dude and she was wearing the face protector
was so much hotter than the way it was handled in the original.

Prometheus - 5 out of 5

Loved it! Why do people dislike this movie? May have to go check the official thread now that I've seen it. Beautiful film in terms of art. Makes up for the past few stinkers like Alien Resurrection, AVP, and AVP 2. Yeah, there were some stupid moments like Holloway taking his helmet off or the biologist casually fooling around with the Hammerpede, but those scenes didn't drag the film down. Good performances from Noomi and Fassbender. Also, Charlize Theron in here too? Oh yeahhhhhhhh Btw, the
trilobite and deacon
at the end of the film... HOLY FUCK. The
trilobite
has to be the scariest alien in the Alien universe. It's like the
facehugger x 1000000. So fucked up looking.

Prometheus is just so corny, I watched Tron Legacy today, and despite being rubbish, even that is far better written, fewer, more composed characters, no real development, but at least they're not completely brain dead.

People dislike it for a lot of reasons, quite often they discuss the 'plot holes', which I don't think is at all an issue, some people hated that the film's big reveal was the first thing you see, which I personally loved. It's a very Lost thing to do actually, quite often on the show, when they've been teasing something for ages, when they finally tell you, they tell you in the opening scene, and make the episode about something slightly different. I don't know if the opening was already in place before Lindelof was brought on though.

Because the script, characters, and even plot are terrible. It could have been much better, but it ended up being pretty awful in my opinion.

Glad you liked it, though. I guess it's success supports continued sci-fi blockbusters in any event, which is good.

I think I'm going to rewatch Kingdom of Heaven tonight. I'm trying to understand whether Ridley Scott is actually a good director or not, so I've got a few of his movies I want to watch again or for the first time to that end.
