NRA blames media, violent video games for violent culture

The problem is you have people saying we need to ban certain models of guns because that will somehow curb gun crime (which is what the assault weapons ban in 1994 did and IT DID NOTHING). Both sides of the argument are stupid. There needs to be a gate stopping you from owning firearms through background checks and psych evaulations. But once you pass I dont see why you cant own what you want.

Needs to be tighter controls on how guns are stored, in the uk which is pretty tough to own a gun in you have an officer come to your house and you have to show them where you plan on storing it securely then they have to deem it safe or not. These types of shooting you hear about how they got the weapons from a legal owner etc so storage of the weapons should be at the top of the list.

nice shootin, try another

any link to Kindergarten Killers?

It's the first link if you Google it. It's a Flash game where you kill kindergarten kids with a gun. They have guns, too. Arnold Schwarzenegger is the last boss, or at least the boss I got up to before quitting.

It's a 10 year old Flash game. I'm pretty sure it has no relevance to anything at this point.

Wow. He sounded like even he didn't believe what he was reading from the press release.

Nice job NRA. You're not the problem at all. Guns are fine. It's the video games.

SMH.

The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun," said Wayne LaPierre.
Unbefuckinglievable. Such stupidity actually leaves me speechless.

I am without speech.

It's a shame really these people can't seem to grasp the problem, next shooting spree in the states is just a matter of time and it's always innocent people being gunned down by some maniac with access to guns. Until then people are going back and forth bickering about what's right or wrong and not reaching any kind of conclusion only to have the debate die down until the next spree.

Did anyone expect anything less from the NRA? They've spent millions, if not billions preventing any gun regulation despite many mass shootings. Did you think they would suddenly have a change of heart? They are scum and they've been distributing insane propaganda to gun owners for so many years that I hold them almost completely responsible for the paranoid gun culture we have today in this country.

Of course he didn't. Those games show guns being used by military personnel.

Notice how he didn't mention hunting games, either.

The whole thing was bizarre. You could tell that they were trying to be very careful with the games that they picked. That's why we see Splatterhouse and MK. Both of those games make very little use of guns, they're more about violence done through hand to hand combat or with random objects/weapons.

I can't kill dozens of real people with GTA. I'm not that accurate with throwing discs.

I can however kill dozens with assault rifles that shouldn't be on the market but are for some reason. There's no purpose to having guns at all, they can't be used as tools like knives can.

Someone said it in another thread. Make it like a driver's test. Need to be checked out every couple of years.

You say no purpose to having guns at all.

I'll be having Venison this weekend, it will be delicious and the deer were killed by my family.

Everything encompassing responsibility for owning a firearm should be outlined. But once all those things are passed, why can I own whatever gun I want?

This is what americans do for automatic weapons and destructive devices. But they dont do it for anything else. Go figure.

If he mentions the military games, he infuriates his membership. If he mentions the hunting games, he infuriates his membership.

As always, nobody should take anything the NRA says seriously.

Neither are the problem, mentally damaged people are the problem. If there are no guns then it's home made bombs. The only guns I feel that should be allowed to be bought are shotguns handguns and hunting rifles. The problem is if people want powerful weapons they can get powerful weapons laws are not gonna stop jack shit.

The amount of stupidity that gets spread around after a black swan event like this shooting is mind-numbing. From damn near all parties.

I also love 'ole Wayne Lapierre mentioning American Psycho, probably because of the title alone, without ever seeing the movie or knowing what it's message is.

It has relevance in that it gives ammo to those who want to blame videogames for school shootings. Whoever made that should publicly apologize and then donate any money he may have made off it to charity. Sicko.

I think they do grasp it. I think they believe their business and zero accountability is more important, so they have to make up stuff to further those agendas.

They know, they don't fucking care.

Some more quotes:
"You know, five years ago, after the Virginia Tech tragedy, when I said we should put armed security in every school, the media called me crazy. But what if, when Adam Lanza started shooting his way into Sandy Hook Elementary School last Friday, he had been confronted by qualified, armed security?"

"Now, the National Rifle Association knows that there are millions of qualified active and retired police; active, reserve and retired military; security professionals; certified firefighters and rescue personnel; and an extraordinary corps of patriotic, trained qualified citizens to join with local school officials and police in devising a protection plan for every school. We can deploy them to protect our kids now. We can immediately make America's schools safer relying on the brave men and women of AmericaÂ’s police force.

The budget of our local police departments are strained and resources are limited, but their dedication and courage are second to none and they can be deployed right now
."

"Before Congress reconvenes, before we engage in any lengthy debate over legislation, regulation or anything else, as soon as our kids return to school after the holiday break, we need to have every single school in America immediately deploy a protection program proven to work and by that I mean armed security."

As always, nobody should take anything the NRA says seriously.

Sadly they do apparently have quite a bit of pull with the Republican party. You can bet that any videogame bills that are put up will be jumped on and pushed forward as soon as possible so that they can continue to deflect attention away from guns.

Just finished reading the statement. As someone that supports a common sense right to bear arms, and is NOT a member of the NRA (for full disclosure), it's my opinion that this is nothing more than seeking opportunity through fear mongering.

And if you really respect the families of those that were killed, SHUT THE FUCK UP. Taking your FB page down was a protective measure, nothing more. Blaming media is a protective move. Blaming games is a defensive move. It's complete horse shit, but it's even stinkier when they use tragedy as an opportunity to spread their own message.

I hope that Wayne LaPierre rots in whatever hell he believes in.

I expected him to say something like that. Hopefully the more he talks, the more people realize the extremeness of the NRA's positions.

It must be nice to band together and blame an industry that can't really fight back at the moment.

NRA doesn't want to face a lobby thats more powerful than it.
The people behind the Drug Industry. The real problem.
So they pick on easy targets like TV and Games.

So, they can't be used to hunt?

Or you could have just gone to the supermarket like a normal person.

Or you could not bitch about video games, and just enjoy them
like a normal person
.

Argument works both ways.

Why they are so powerful again? I forget... because they are a big voting block? 4-5million automatic votes. But why would this matter to democrats, they're all going to vote repub anyway.

Nice to see MSNBC actually defending videogames right now. Bringing up how it's ridiculous to pretend like the US is the only place with videogames. They also brought up how GTA was created in the UK, which has very little gun violence compared to the US.

The rest of the world watches the same movies, plays the same games, and barely anything happens.

This, so much this. Wonder what they'll blame next.

As for gun control, I see no legitimate reason a civilian needs to own a gun the likes of an AR-15. Assault rifles should be strictly military issue. Can't purchase land mines, AA guns or a Tomahawk cruise missiles. The same should apply to assault rifles. Civilians should be restricted to owning shotguns and hunting rifles only.

Or you could have just gone to the supermarket like a normal person.

What's wrong with hunting? Or do you feel like it's OK to just purchase food harvested (often killed) by someone else, toted by fossil fuel to your local grocer and then handled by lots of other people?

Hunting is a perfectly valid reason to own a gun, provided you've registered your weapon with the state and have passed hunting/firearm safety courses. And before anyone else chimes in, you don't need automatic or semi-automatic weapons to hunt. Grandfather in what's already out there and then ban the sale going forward.

Of course they do. They're a club of right-wing sociopaths.

Never mind that this is a uniquely - almost exclusively - American problem. Call of Duty isn't taboo in the UK or Netherlands.
