Fighting Games Weekly | December 24-30 | How will we free Lando now?

I have a question for you fighting game experts. Was Killer Instinct a good fighting game? Personally I loved the fast gameplay and the combos, but was it a good game gameplay mechanics wise? Would it work competitively for example?

So sad they never made a sequel.

You gotta ask someone old as fuck who actually seen competitive Killer Instinct. Shit only thing I remember about that game was button mashing.

I'm not sure I would call KI a good game, but I did find it a very interesting game, the combo system was neat in its weirdness.

I do think the game was a bit over designed though, there were just a couple too many mechanics, like coming back to life as a ghost was a little strange.

I thought it was pretty good, at least then anyway.

Only time I hated 1 was when I was against a Cinder going for that stupid easy infinite. But I thought 2 was great, and really adored playing it in the arcades.

IIRC the game itself had a lot of things which didn't make sense, like how 15 hit combos can do less damage than 4 hit combos. Add in the combo breakers and I am not sure why people would want to take the game seriously.

From what I remember, there were two types of combos in KI, "auto" combos and "manual" combos, auto combos were longer and flashier, but they did less damage and were much easier to break, where as manual combos were shorter, did more damage, and you had a much smaller window to break.

It was a weird game.

Q is a mix of both! that's why he's so sexy!

Oro and Alex and Urien as well.

3rd strike has the best charge character designs in a sf.

BUUUUUUUUUT the game didn't work in their favor like charge characters normally do, hell a lot of Q's moves were unsafe on block

Why? She can zone, she can cross-up and she can DP. I'd agree she has too many options overall, but that's not too big of a deal considering the execution barrier.

What makes C.Viper a "horrible" fit for a Street Fighter game after 25 years and countless iterations? Genuine question.

Viper is dumb because it's too easy to negate the spacing game and the risk is too low for her mixups. The execution barrier hardly matters with her since she only has a few high-execution things that are essential, and if you grind that shit out for a week you're going to be pretty consistent with it so I don't know if I'd call it high-execution anyway. Maybe just high-execution relative to most of the other characters in that game.

She would be way less dumb if burning kick was like -4 on block or something.

You don't actually use 80 moves in a match, when you pick a character part of learning the character is weeding out the less useful moves until you have like 20-ish moves that are your bread and butter. Ignore strings that are too long, they are easy to counter. Learning fundamentals is way more important, you have to learn spacing whiff punishing, side stepping, when to low parry/block or duck/reversal, poking (which is a majority of good Tekken play), mixing up mid/lows and throws and finally how to wake up and how to beat certain wake up options.

Learning how to play characters doesn't seem that daunting to me. Learning matchups does.

We'll see though. I've only played the game a few days so I'm talking out of my ass pretty hard here.

Sticks?

Who's making a list for GAF's GotY vote and what fighting games are on it? I have three, including one runner up. Never did get to play TTT2, maybe next year.

My Fighting GOTY is probably persona but after its probably SC5 or SFxT. TTT2 is a great game but tekken I think isn't for me. Atleast not without major time dedication to re-learning tekken.

Soul Calibur V is #6 on my list. At the same time, I was about to say I didn't buy or play any new fighting games this year, and forgot it even came out this year. From what it's looking like, I won't be buying any other fighting games from this year or the next.

There are like 80 different mechanics and little things you have to be mindful of, caveats to pretty much everything, and every character has like a million different options and ways to mix up their strings. I don't see how Tekken doesn't have a very steep learning curve compared to most other fighting games.

This is a great answer so I won't make my own reply.

I only had one game on the list and it was TTT2. That's the only game I need until Smash Bros. 4 or TKXSF hit......whichever comes first.

.......Maybe I should have listed SFXTK as well.

Was curious to see if I was remembering KI right, so found a video guide.
Two Parts.

Game is just as odd as I remember, the way you have to use all of your different combo enders in one match to power up the other enders is neat.

I had no idea but there is apparently a parry system in the game.

So I'm thinking for next week's thread, in the OP it would be cool to do a round up of all the fighting games coming out next year, just to look at what's in store for the community for 2013.

I think Slamtastic (?) made a list to start with somewhere in a previous thread but I can't seem to find it.

Injustice: Gods Among Us
Darkstalkers: Resurrection
Dead or Alive 5: Plus
BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma Console Release

...that's all I've got.

2013 not looking so hot either, I'm mildly excited for darkstalkers at least.

I didn't make a list, I just reminded everyone that 2013 will be a great year for fighting games because Injustice and Jojo's ASB will be out.

Assuming of course that Injustice has playable netcode unlike MK and Jojo's is not a costly import that no one plays.

Q is a mess overall

I'm just hype for BBCP gonna be the first Bb game that feels like an upgrade from GG

I guess the main question would be is Q top tier?

I'm hoping for a BBCP Xbox release. Buying a PS3 to get the new Jojo game and BBCP won't be too big of an issue given that the price of the system has been falling like a rock, but I would prefer to stick with XBL's online networking.

?

and no Q is only top tier if you can parry like a robot which is irrelevant due to mak counter picks

SfxT v2013 counts? It's A LOT different then it's vanilla version, I know there's quite a few people that will comeback to that game

Is there anywhere where I can reliably watch some of the older tournaments instead of having to search through Youtube match by match? I don't even mind doing that but I can't find the proper order to watch the matches in. I'm thinking something like Norcal Regionals 2011/12.

Best bet would be to browse through archives on twitch. Past broadcasts are ordered by date so if you know when the event took place, it shouldn't take too long to find. Between Teamspooky, Leveluplive and IPW, you should be able to find most majors.

1. Viper lacks any kind of theme. Yeah, yeah Blanka and Dahlism. But generally the SF characters have very distinct/stereotypical appearance or fighting style.

2. She relies on weapons/technology for her abilities instead of training despite being one of the good guys, er gals.

3. Gameplay in practice: self-explanatory

4. Gameplay design:
I'd agree she has too many options overall, but that's not too big of a deal considering the execution barrier.
High execution, high reward, low risk has always been awful design even though I'll admit I used to subscribe to that myself.

-It alienates a large number of players
-It reduces the importance of psychology in favor of being a robot
-The execution barrier works on the principle that even specialists won't hit a consistently. But that has been proven false on multiple occasions from ewgfs to Kabal's block loop

So yes, both as a character and from every aspect of gameplay she is awful. And since everyone always hates Capcom's business side, I'll mention that she was a focus grouped (conceptually) character.

I actually had a question for the AE warriors in here. How different would the combos of charge characters be if their Ultras were changed from charge motions to regular double QCF motions?

Difference between amazing and awful for the ultra. And the projectile zoning game would become even less relevant. That actually did happen with Bison U2.

I prefer charge controls. I only like playing Chun when her fireball's a charge and I prefer her ultra 1 input to ultra 2 in every case.

Viper's an SNK tribute character, no?

Dan? Yes. Viper? Probably not. She just fits in KoF and anime games better.

With all due respect to him, he’s a great character, but honestly we thought Crimson Viper would be a big hit here,” Ono said. “We got a lot of marketing data and a lot of advice from our U.S. branch in creating that character. She was kind of custom-tailored for the States and we thought people would like her.
