DmC Review Thread (Release Date - 1/15/13) Embargo is over!

Well now it all makes sense... you don't particularly care for deep game play as long as the story is good.

The Walking Dead is that a way ->> http://www.neogaf.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=8

Yea high level DmC is going to look different from previous games. You have more tools to control crowds and you have to be constantly timing your Demon Dodge and timing your charge moves for high damage.

your replies are just as bad as the posts you're replying to.

It truly dumbfounds me every time, and I blank it from my memory that people liked Bayonetta. I can usually put myself in other's shoes, but I have a hard time seeing Bayonetta from a good standpoint. The only thing good about it was gameplay and it isn't nearly as fun as it is made out to be. That isn't to say it isn't good gameplay, but to make up for the terrible characters, story, plot, dialogue it isn't even close.

Sorry...I just really didn't like that game. I know I sound like the developers bitch-slapped my mom, but that's just how I feel.
I think that's the problem right there: everyone who loves Bayonetta couldn't give a shit about the narrative aspect. We all knew to not expect anything great, it was acceptable so long as it didn't actively agitate like, say, Star Ocean 4. So, "the only good thing is the gameplay" was all that really mattered to most of us. But then everyone would have different measures for being agitated, and Bayonetta wasn't the kind of thing to really set me off so it was a non-factor, but I can see that being different for others.

... Actually, was it skippable? Well, whatever.
I've never played anything that was 100% terrible. Ever. I don't think many have. Even in things we hate we can find positives.
Even Big Rigs is good for a laugh.

Actually, the very worst games are those that are below average, but do absolutely nothing to distingush themselves other than just playing badly. I think I tried a WWII shooter demo on the 360 that was critically panned, and didn't really do anything particularly unique other than look really bad and be boring. Those are the games closest to irredeemable, at best they only make other games look good, but they aren't even worthy of a laugh or desperation play, not unless every other possible venue for entertainment wasn't available to you.

The DMC games never had great stories, but the cutscenes I've seen for DmC are downright cringeworthy.

Caught some stuff on YouTube and I won't say you're wrong. It's very back and forth from what I saw. But still I'm interested. Going to pick it up on steam during launch week.

According to Tameem it was balanced like all DMC games... from hardest difficulty going down. Of course we can't really test this until we get the game ourselves.

I've played the demo (yes I gave into temptation)

I'm not convinced.

Still, either away, I await yours and Gunbo's final analysis.

Unless you were exaggerating what you thought of Bayonetta's gameplay, you specifically said it was good. You might value story over gameplay, but you should know others value gameplay more than anything.
Yes, Bayonetta's gameplay was good. Sorry---what I said about never playing anything 100% terrible wasn't worded well. I was defending the notion that it's possible to like one aspect of something and still not like it overall---that even bad games/movies/books (whatever you want to fill in) can have some gold in 'em. Bayonetta is that way for me. It isn't 100% terrible, as it has some gold. I just want to know where the other paid members of the creative staff were who weren't involved in stage design, boss battles, combat system, etc.

Boosh! Someone on my side. Oh....wait a minute.
That's the joke.
Doubtful.

I'm hopeful there are some great cutscenes in DmC, but review-wise it seems more entertaining for them to point out the terrible ones. Crossing my fingers.

I really can understand being turned off by the art design and overall presentation of Bayonetta to the point where you don't care about how good the gameplay is.

Fortunately, I enjoyed it all.

Unfortunately, my disc is cracked. :|

Having a tough time believing there's people in the world that don't love Bayonetta.

Boggles my mind. I loved everything about it including the story and the characters. Bayonetta, Agent Francis York Morgan and Travis Touchdown are easily the most memorable characters from this gen for me.

I enjoyed Bayonetta's gameplay a lot but is it weird that I had more fun playing DMC4?

Gameplay should always be the forefront of one's enjoyment of a game but Bayonetta just had such horrible character design and music that it really sadly did detract from my enjoyment a bit.

Still one of the best action games of all time though.

Relative to the missle riding and bike riding sequences (in Bayonetta) the forest maze (in DMC4) was amazing.

People actually liked Bayonetta? My world has been torn asunder.

Which version? I'd agreed that the PS3 version is garbage thanks to the poor frame rate and various other issues, but the 360 version is amazing.

edit: Caught up on the rest. Does seem like DmC was designed specifically for you.

same people who tend to have an issue with japanese games in general.

Its rather telling whjen you follow the post history of the majority of Bayo haters.

there is nothing wrong with hating her as character, but hating bayo as game usually comes from a overall dislike of these type of games.

I don't agree with this. There's plenty of stuff that comes out of Japan that I enjoy. That can range from stuff like Dragon Quest, Asura's Wrath and Catherine to Dynasty Warriors.

I don't like Bayonetta either because I find it aesthetically shit and off-putting.

On topic:

I'm waiting for some real feedback from people who play this game. I've never trusted reviews that much. So far, Heavenly Sword was shit, and Enslaved was okay. That's not a good batting average for NT. I'm not too fond of the overall direction change either, but I'm willing to give this a chance.

Dynasty Warriors and Asura's Wrath over Bayonetta...

You can download the demo. IMO it's way better than either Enslaved or Heavenly Sword... better than NG3 as well.

Point was to demonstrate that things can be off-putting for people when playing games even if the core gameplay is solid. And it's not because of "hating" Japanese games. It can vary from person to person. Some things click, others don't. It shouldn't be a surprise that some people may not like an over the top, hyper-sexualised aesthetic. But continue to make use of crappy gifs of some half-naked wrestler to respond in a condescending manner. I mean, I'm a little bit hurt, but I'll get over it I guess.

This right here is why I posted that gif. You claim that you don't like over the top aesthetics yet games like Asura's Wrath and Dynasty Warriors are definitely over the top action games. The difference between those games and Bayonetta are the core mechanics which are vastly superior in Bayonetta. Asura's Wrath is a glorified QTE cinematic game and Dynasty Warriors is the poster boy of repetitive hack and slash action.

It's just funny seeing all these comments in a DEVIL MAY CRY thread... the series that is known for over the top action. Granted this version of DMC isn't as over the top in its cutscenes (still the opening cutscene has naked Dante going through a trailer in slow mo while slowly putting on his clothes) but it's still pretty balls to the wall. In addition, if aesthetics and storyline is of great importance to you then this might not be a genre you want to invest in because that's not where the developers put their best foot forward... it's in the combat and game play.

I liked DMC4 more than Bayo. Mainly because Bayo felt the need to throw in those god awful throwback levels. I'll take backtracking any day over a Space Harrier homage.

Besides that, DMC4 in Bloody Palace is absolutely sublime. Nothing in the genre tops it from a PURELY gameplay standpoint.

That was where DMC was. This is DmC. The hair isn't white. The invincibility frames on a dodge exceed a roll-canceled yoga flame. Responsive controls got downgraded for better textures and scripted walls.

This is the DmC for him to be in. Just like the old Tomb Raider wasn't the franchise for me (although I did like Underworld), the new Tomb Raider is perfect for my Batman Arkham x playing arse. This is time for the outliers on the old guard to get purged for the new blood.

Yes, Happy new year to you all!

I will re-learn Bayonetta in the next few weeks. Then it is DmC time, then it is MG:Rising time. Cant believe what a great time is ahead of us all. And do not forget...Bayonetta 2 soon(tm)!

Happy New Year DMC/Action GAF!

Honestly DmC is more DMC than Tomb Raider is TR. DmC is at least still in the same genre.

That is the saddest story in 2013. I can only deal with that by IGNORING the whole game.

Simply because:
- I love Tomb Raider (classic style)
- I love Crystal Dynamics (Soul Reaver!!!!)
- I love Guardian of Light

And then, bam. Uncharted Raider happens. :(

:( I'm going through TR2 right now and it hurts to think about modern Tomb Raider atm.

I'm on the opposite side of the Tomb Raider debacle. Relative newcomer to the series who thinks this one looks awesome.

My apologies.

TBF the only tomb raider I really played being anniversary, I consider at least that recent iteration to be fairly mediocre, but even then something about the new game seems off. I mean regardless of whether it has similarities mechanics wise or otherwise to it's predecessors a game called tomb raider should at least have siginifant part of it being about raiding tombs even if it is uncharted tombs. Maybe it is still that but I'm having my doubts

Hahaha, this analogy is amazing.

Well fuck, I thought it was the same date for all three and I had more time to work on it, but PC is 25th while 360/PS3 is 15th, my bad. :/ I'll try to finish up the OP asap.

Just beat DMC4 for the first time, it was okay. I would take DMC3SE any day of the week over it but switching styles on the fly with Dante is pretty sick. I'll keep trying to get further in Bloody Palace and beat that before DmC drops, I'm looking forward to it after playing the demo.

pretty obvious from the acheivement list that the boss fights are few and far between and judging by the Hunter, bob bardas and secret ingredient fights, are extremely basic.

But honestly, DMC4 ones were pretty shit outside of Credo.

I still don't understand why they didn't make blitz a boss. Give him a bit more health and he would of genuinely been one of the harder fights in the game. Even worse, think of having to fight 3 of them at the same time, Angi and rudra style..

Am I the only one who found Blitz to be extremely easy? Both Nero and Dante have methods at their disposal to end the enemy extremely quickly.

People actually liked Bayonetta? My world has been torn asunder.

lol

I played and very much enjoyed the PS3 version, for some reason I didn't notice any of these complaints.

I was also very happy to have a long ending with many extras when so many games end too quick, also interactive credits? genius!....also I'm ashamed to admit..dat ass!!....

Bayonetta's grasshopper shape really freaked me out. I don't know, I'm a man who can appreciate a Chun-Li, but those things were just freaky.

Still hyped about this, despite everything. I don't think it'll blow my mind, but it should be some good fun.

The backtracking in DMC1 is done so much better than how it was handled in DMC3 and DMC4. New music, updated boss fights with new attack patterns, different locales intermixed with the reused assets. Nigh time appearance, new enemies, new lighting system that gives the game a completely different visual feel. Not to mention this segment also marks the point at which the game becomes significantly harder in general. Not for any one - time instance (ie, phantom boss fight round 1) but in general. A lot of people had problems with Nobody's and those lighting bats (forgot name).

DMC1 is clearly the best DMC game when you view it as a complete package - a game, beyond one facet of it's design. That is to say people enjoyed DMC1 even if they didn't necessarily care for the combat. Whereas, if you don't 'get' the combat in DMC3 or DMC4, you probably didn't think too highly of those games.

Since we're talking about locking on in DmC, what I presume to be common knowledge by now, but you can cycle between target locks in DmC by pressing/clicking in Left Analog L3.

I found myself doing something that I did in Bayonetta - since I rarely used the hard lock on system in that game as well (and I know I didn't because I never liked lock on to RB, doesn't feel comfortable on the 360 pad). But I would always quickly shoot Bayo's pistols to get an idea of who and where the enemy I was targeting was. It was actually very interesting to later find out when I was watching some of Kamiya's play throughs but he does the same thing as well, often recommending people use and follow Bayonetta's bullets as an indicator of where the various enemies are. Since the game's camera was average at best, often times the targeted enemy was off-camera. So it was pretty helpful.

I do the same thing in DmC, I quickly tap the shoot button if there are a group of enemies clustered together, the enemy Dante is shooting at is the one he's targeting - you can then cycle between targets by clicking in left analog (L3).

Ninja Theory has and programmed a button to cycle target locks between enemies - which is nice, and gives more control to a god of war inspired soft lock on system, but they didn't include a target marker icon. Which would have obviously helped.

Just because the DMC fanbase won't buy it doesn't mean the entire game will flop. Sure the fanbase contribute a fair amount of sales in video games but if they market it well and people buy it when they hear it's good, it will sell. Outselling DMC4 is definitely a possibility. Scratch that. Highly likely.

The problem is that this game is harder to market than the other DMCs.

First problem is that they have, for the most part, alienated their hardcore DMC fanbase. Game is slower, big chunks of the game are focused on something other than the fighting, and its made by one of the least desirable studios to make action games.

So they are left trying to sell a hardcore game without the support of most of their hardcore fanbase.

and that's where problem number two kicks in. This new Dante is just nowhere near as marketable as the previous one.

The new Dante, in an attempt to make him more edgy, has become more generic, not just that but the writers have made him so unlikable, that is really hard to cheer or even side with him. The original Dante was not only likable (sure, super cheesy, but people like that), but also stood out from other video game characters in general.

People who have never played a DMC game before.

I know I shit on the controls and mechanics frequently but the controls/mechanics are such that anyone can pick up and play DMC and start doing fancy combos and look like a bad ass. That instant gratification is what hooks people in. The kind of combos that you can do at entry level in DmC you are not really able to do in previous DMC games until you have a solid understanding of the mechanics and a handle on the lock on system and its moves.

Shiny graphics and cool environments will bring them in more. DMC is now considered an old franchise by many, a lot of gamers started gaming with this generation and probably skipped out on DMC4. There's a lot of people I know who dig the game but have never played DMC before. I think reviews would sway them even further.

I can't begin to imagine what the casual interest in this game is.. I am NOT a casual gamer obviously.

This right here is the only way they ll be able to sell really. The problem though is that the camera is awful so it makes it harder to show off being a bad ass.

It's all good! =)

I like to call this the God of War effect except replace combos with bloody executions and gore.

The difference is that God of War had a much better camera to show off the combos and everything else. Very easy to show everything you are doing.

DmC? not so much
