Wii U Satisfaction Thread

Since i only have two games, nsmbu (more of the same) & nintendo land (still sealed) it's tough to give any real opinion on the system yet from a game standpoint. I was able to download the Rayman Legends (more of the same) & Fifa 13 (solid game but i'm sure the online community is dead) demo's & they took about the same time to download as my 360 demos. Eshop loads really slow though & froze up on me once.
Off Tv play didn't work up stairs for me.
Miiverse,TVii,etc... just don't interest me.

Now the real highlight for me was the upgrade in original Wii game graphics.
Every single game i played showed a noticeable improvement with the exception of Madworld.
Tatsunoko vs Capcom especially blew me away.

In reality, there is about zero improvement to Wii games running on the Wii U. If you had your Wii connected via Component, at best you'll see a very slight increase in sharpness. If you used a terrible cable or had a TV with a terrible analogue input for some reason, the difference might be bigger. But the Wii U is doing nothing special to Wii games.

I bought a Wii U for my wife to play Mario on.

The new Mario game did not disappoint, although it was a hair easier than I expected.
Seeing Mario in HD is awesome. Being able to use the Wii controller (not the Wii U controller) on Mario is also nice, especially for multiplayer.

The youtube experience is better than on xbox and ps3, likely because the stylus and controller make typing easier.

The controller is actually decent. I'm pretty surprised at how good it is, although you'll still need other controllers for certain games.

Cons: Sluggish when changing between things....but this may be fixed in later update.

Overall, I'm pretty happy with it. I buy Nintendo consoles strictly for Mario/Zelda, and the occasional Nintendo exclusive. I feel like I will use it a LOT more than the Wii. My wife is already using it to play Mario on the touchscreen while I play Battlefield 3 on the tv.

I think they actually look worse on my setup due to the increased sharpness over HDMI. Makes the jaggies more noticeable anyway.

All i know is in my play time their was a noticeable difference in image quality.
Why that is,i don't know but it's their.

Man, does anyone else start hearing the rolling stones every single time they see this thread bumped on the front page?

If your TV has an abysmal scaler then you might see more than a slight increase in sharpness.

Of course, nothing beats a 854x480 (EDTV) plasma for SD gaming.

Sorry, but if my CRT HDTV was still alive, I'm sure it would like to have a word with you.

Ok, nothing save for a really good CRT HDTV (Panasonic Tau comes to mind).

Is there a Wii U indifference thread? Shouldn't we have one to cover all of our bases because I'm not sure why I bought it, I just felt like I had to. Now that I've messed around with it for a few weeks, it's okay. I feel neither satisfaction nor remorse. I'm staring at it right now and I feel absolutely nothing.

This is when the cheating usually begins.

Ninja Gaiden 3 RE is the game that has convinced me that off TV mode is the greatest thing ever. Just playing while watching some sports, tv or news is incredible. I do wish the gamepad screen was a bit higher res but it still rocks.

Only gripe with the machine is the lag between switching through menus. i'm hoping this will be fixed soon. Other than that, I'm loving it so far.

I'm looking high and low for the option to turn off the screen on the game pad, but still play Mario with it on the tv.

Let me guess, no such option exists.

I'm not at my machine right now.. but can't you just hit home and go to controller settings and select 'turn off screen'?

EDIT: nm only works for certain things. Soon as you hit a button it comes on lol.

I haven't tried turning off the GP screen then playing the game with a Wiimote yet though.

You will have to use a wiimote if you want to turn the display off. The best you can do is just turn the brightness way down and stick power save on to save as much energy as possible.

That's what I thought. :/

It seems so obvious that some people would like to play with the game pad (it's incredibly comfortable), but not be using it's screen, draining it's battery at a rapid rate. You should be able to deactivate the screen, and have it reactivate with the first touch of the screen.

On a related WTF note, why does the disc keep spinning in the drive no matter what I'm doing? I'm playing the Rayman Legends demo (which was awesome btw), and the Mario disc is spinning away in the drive the whole time. On the Xbox when a disc isn't bring used it stops spinning it, thus making the system run quieter, and saving a little wear and tear on the hardware.

I really love this console after playing with it for a few days, but Nintendo continues to baffle with the little things they overlook.

Yeah I have noticed the disc spinning thing, kind of annoying with stuff like Netflix. Odd thing to overlook despite them trying to be energy saving with the whole design.

Anyone having problems with Wii remotes coming unsynced? I've had to re-sync my main Wii remote four times now...anyone know why this might be happening?

Never happened with me. I think I have only synced my two Wiimotes when I bought my original Wii and then again when I bought Wii U.

I disagree wholeheartedly.

I don't know the tech behind it but I know what my eyes see and my Wii games look better in 1080p w/ HDMI than they do in 480p with component.

I've had to re-sync mine each time I move them between the Wii and WiiU, but other than that - nope.

This is one of the things that killed the Wii U stone dead for me.

I really enjoyed Off TV Play when I had the chance to use it. Problem was, when I was using Off TV Play, it was always in a situation where my wife was in the same room watching TV. We can't have the TV on loud enough to drown out the sound of the Wii U as we have a young daughter, which meant the sound of the Wii U whirring, clunking and spluttering would frequently drown out the sound of the TV.

Just a ridiculous amount of noise. I can't remember owning a more obnoxiously loud and irritating sounding piece of hardware in my life.

i have exactly $65.02 in my e shop wallet.

do i buy:

1. new super mario brothers u

or

2. trine 2 and sonic all stars racing transformed

thoughts?

ZombiU? :)

I didnt care for the original Trine. The demo for sonic all-stars was fun but I don't see myself buying it.

I think you might get more use out of Mario Bros U with all the multiplayer stuff. It's a pretty tough game that will keep you occupied for a while if you want to 100% it. I beat it but still go back to find star coins and hidden exits. Plus there are other challenges that I haven't even bothered with. It's a pretty deep game for a platformer.

Trine 2 looks amazing, as does Nano Assault Neo. I'd get both of those if you haven't already.

People who have played a lot of the previous New Super Mario games seem to not get much out of the U version, but that may be just a matter of too many games in too short period, and nothing is wrong with the game itself. I still haven't finished the Wii version...

i already have zombi u on disc.

i actually already have trine 2 on PS3 from PS+ but i havent touched it at all. was thinking of getting the superior version on wii u but seeing as i havent even bothered even trying the game on PS3, im not sure if ill even be into it on the wii u.

i played the sonic demo. seems nice although i hear it gets pretty tough and frustrating later on.

nsmbu seems like the obvious choice but is it worth having digital on the wii u forever or should i just go out and get it on disc?

swaying more towards nsmb now..!

edit:

oh and i also already have nano assault neo (and little inferno).

i beat nsmb on DS and i have nsmb on wii but i haven't played it much (BACKLOG). so nsmbu should feel 'fresh' for me if i get it.

I'm enjoying my WiiU so far, but I have a problem with the gamepad:

I stop playing with the gamepad fully charged, then after a few days without using the Wii U, when I try to power on the console from the gamepad, it won't work. It seems that the gamepad's battery has drained itself and I have to plug it in and recharge the battery. Does this happen to you as well? Maybe the gamepad never turns off completely and remains in stand by mode for whatever stupid reason?

Really loving my WiiU at the moment (I have a 360 also, just so you know).

I have got -

Nintendoland
ZombiU
Trine 2
Nano Assault Neo
Little Inferno
Black Ops 2

Enjoying all of them at the moment for different reasons, but the local player of both ZombiU and Black Ops 2 are particular standouts.

I got a Pro Controller off my wife for Christmas and she absolutely LOVES playing ZombiU multiplayer on it. She loves games like Tomb Raider, the older Resident Evil games, Silent Hill etc, but has never been able to play shooters of any description due to using twin sticks - she just can't get used to it. She loves playing as the Zombie King (Queen :p) on ZombiU though and we both have a great time with it.

I play local multi on Blops2 with my son and find it much better than us both playing say, Halo 4 on our individual 360's, him upstairs, me down stairs.

Off screen play for the others like Little Inferno, Trine 2 etc is great, too. Ideal for playing with Match of the Day on in the background for example.

Oh and -

Ive got Black Ops 2 coming tomorrow, any impressions on how well (or not) it runs with the gamepad?

Runs perfectly well from the gamepad. Colours are a little washed out, but it's nothing game breaking by any means. I must admit, I find it easier using the pro controller for this game, but if using the TV isn't feasible, the gamepad makes a great alternative.

I think my Wii U is dead, it's not playing disc-based games. Both games I own (Mario and Nintendoland) show up in the Wii menu and boot as far as their splash screens, but they just sit there. Music plays but otherwise they're unresponsive.

Anyone else had this? I think the drive must be knackered somehow.

Rest of the console works fine.

Or it can at least take a moderate beating.

Yesterday, I accidentally kicked the console quite hard while tidying up the living room. It fell over with a healthy sounding *BAM* and I thought well, there goes the new toy. Fortunately it seemed undamaged. Disc drive and fan worked normally and didn't produce unusual noises.

Today, the exactly same thing happened to my girlfriend! Kick, *BAM*!

(I must admit, the console is placed vertically on the floor in front of the rack, which isn't the safest place. But it is the same spot where the Wii used to stand before and it never occurred that somebody stumbled over the console. Hm, that little extra depth seems to be more of a problem than I thought. I have put it horizontally into the rack now, no more footjobs for you bloody Wii U, damn it.)

The console still works without any flaws. I hope there won't be an early malfunction as a long term or short term-effect, but for now it looks like that it is not so very easy to break.

Just send it in and get it refurbished

Sonic racing is absolutely fantastic, especially for the price. Keep in mind though that mario will likely remain $60 for the next 30 years or so, while sonic will see price drops relatively soon. Maybe get mario now and buy sonic at a later date.

I too keep our living-room's tv volume at the minimum (10-20% loudness) and yours is an interesting experience. Yes, I can distinguish the sound coming from the WiiU's disk drive if no other sound sources (except the tv, sitting right next in the AV rack) are on, but it's enough to run the room's air conditioner at min power and I already cannot make out the WiiU sound even if I tried really hard. So congrats on living in some really clean sound environment : )

Never owned a Dreamcast or original 360 then?

OT, I'm as satisfied as I expected to be with mine. NSMB U is cool. Nintendo Land is pretty entertaining and has kept me and the OH content, particularly Metroid Blast (which was unexpected). I've been able to keep chugging through my Metroid Trilogy replay too and have also been enjoying the OS features. Sluggish OS response doesn't concern me massively - it can be fixed. There will be great games on this in the future, so the revealed release schedule doesn't concern me either. My only niggling issues right now are that I get irritated at having the TV image replicated on the Gamepad with no way of blacking the screen - I find it distracting. Also, the screen quality itself is [IMO] just average. Colours are washed out and effects are pixelated. Neither points are enough to alter my overall feeling of satisfaction though and after all, no machine or service is perfect.

I'm satisfied with my Wii U, but I only got it yesterday.

Incidentally my copy of Fifa 13 came with two Stars code things. If anyone wants to trade codes at all, PM me :)

I've been using the system in the last two weeks, I'm definitely satisfied.

I love the GamePad weight and form factor, the screen is big and bright.
I played New Super Mario World, NintendoLand and Sonic Racing Transformed so far and I've enjoyed them all more than expected.
I'll get ZombiU next and Lego City Undercover as soon as it comes out!

Still waiting to hear about a possible PAL release of Game & Wario (I really hope it comes over here!).

My only complaints are with the GamePad battery life. It's really horrible-horrible.

I must add you to my friend list, I mostly play at night CET.

Penny Arcade posted a nice article about Off TV in COD:
http://www.penny-arcade.com/2013/01/07/wii-u-cod

I’ve been playing a lot of Call of Duty recently, which isn’t strange. What’s strange is that I’ve been playing it on the Wii U. It used to be that if a multiplatform game came out, there was no question what system I was going to buy it for. The Xbox 360 was the obvious choice for a number of reasons but the biggest one was Xbox Live.
[...]
So the fact that I’m not only play CoD on my Wii U but fucking LOVING it is pretty bizzare.

So what is it about the Wii U version that makes up for losing access to Xbox Live? For me it’s the gamepad functionality. At any time you can tap a button on the Wii U gamepad and shift the video from your TV down to the handheld screen. For a gaming dad this feature is a blessing.
Tycho and I tested out the multiplayer last night and when he joined the party he couldn’t believe my level. I was already level 30 and I’d only picked up the game a few days ago. I told him it’s all because of the gamepad. It’s so easy to snatch it up when it’s just sitting there next to couch on it’s charging cradle. Half time during the Seahawks game? Kids are watching Brave? Wife is watching NCIS? Yeah I can get a couple rounds in. You don’t even have to leave the room!
If you’re not a single guy who can sit around his apartment all day in his underwear eating chips and playing CoD I’m telling you, the Wii U version is a gift from God. In fact it’s so good that I will probably buy every multiplatform game for the Wii U from now on as long as it has this functionality.
As a father, I totally relate with what he described. It's been a looong time since I could play as much console games as I can now :)

Ditto. Combined with the arcade heaven that is NintendoLand and the instant community integration that is miiverse, WiiU has been a serious re-invention of my gaming self. It's been the closest experience to being at the arcades, which is something you just can't get nowadays (not where I live, anyway).

I must say I'm really enjoying the leader board rankings and hearing people bragging about their score or being a really good player on miiverse.

Puddle and Nano Assault are 2 of the most competitive high score games on wii u so far !

The only way you would see an improvement is if the scaler on your TV was terrible. If anything it looks worse in my experience. Colours don't pop and blacks are kind of grey. I'm not sure if that's related to the fact that the Wii U is stuck with limited RBG, but my Wii on component looks better in terms of color/blacks.

This may not be everyone's experience, but on both Wiis I owned (my original, and the replacement from Nintendo repair) the signal quality of the component out was terrible—in particular, reds bled like crazy. This is not a problem on my U, even over the very same component cable my Wii used.

Your tv should either be able to tell Full-range RGB from Limited-range RGB (mine does), or it should have a menu setting. Blaming a proper HDMI source of doing what it's expected to do (emitting Limited-range RGB is the norm, but that can be overridden via setting on both ends) won't get you the desired picture quality.

Yeah, I was running my Wii through a Scart cable, so for me the leap in clarity and colour is really astounding with Wii U. It finally gave me the drive to finish Xenoblade last night. :) Even at low res it's really pretty with a good image quality!
