RIP MSN Messenger: July 22nd, 1999 - March 15th, 2013

Hello,

On 15th March 2013 we are retiring the existing Messenger service globally (except for mainland China where Messenger will continue to be available) and bringing the great features of Messenger and Skype together. Update to Skype and sign in using a Microsoft Account (same as your Messenger ID) and all your Messenger contacts will be at your fingertips. You'll be able to instant message and video chat with them just like before, and also discover new ways of staying in touch with Skype on your mobile and tablet.

Yours sincerely,
The Messenger Team
end of an era.

Started freaking out a little bit until I remembered the 3 or 4 people I REALLY use it to talk to are on Facebook anyway. Crisis averted.

awwwwwww. this was my primary messenger service. doesn't serve a purpose in the era of text messaging and facebook, but it was cool in the eighth grade.

rip

Don't own a smartphone and don't care for facebook (wayyyyyyy too low signal to noise ratio).
Guess I'm screwed then.

I always liked msn and still use it,it was simple and no noise and you can still leave offline messages and there is a chat log in case you missed something.

I kinda want to convince the people I chat with on MSN to just go Facebook or something. I don't like Skype.

Hope skype gets some easy photo sharing like MSN, will miss that but not much else about it, used to use that shit so much though and it was pretty crazy logging into my old account a few months back to seeing none out of hundreds of friends were online, all about facebook chat now for the casual guy.

Until they reduce skype's weight this is a bad move. Skype is just too much for people who just want to chat. I only ever want to whip that open when it's the ONLY way I can video chat.

I've occasionally installed MSN over the past 5-7 years and it's been a ghost town every time.

I wonder if Microsoft will add Skype auto-login to Xbox.

I've heard that MSN Messenger was widely used here in Canada more so than in the US. Almost everyone I know used MSN up until a couple years back as people started to switch to Facebook.

Yah Skype IM sucks but hopefully it will get better as more people move over to it.

No one uses MSN anymore but still a bit sad to see it go. Was the best back in the high school days.

I don't really like using Skype as a messenger, but still, it's true that is been ages since I used MSN properly. Facebook and Whatsapp/Line took over for me.

Anyway, rip, you had a good run.

Noooo, I still use it because my friends and I have made/used tons of custom emoticons for years ;_;

My favorite part of MSN/WLM. I was such an emote whore back in the day I have tons

Fuck this shit. I REFUSE to accept Skype as my new overlord ;___; The emoticons suck, the interface is a mess and the sounds bug me. A mess.

RIP my Onionhead emoticons.

Seeing how it usually goes when MS takes over software... I doubt that will be the case. :p
True. Guess better keep expectations low.

Oh man. I have a ton. Mostly xxx rated. Gonna miss those. I'm gonna try and get a friend online on the last day of service and just have a party spamming emotions to one another. One final time. :(

When's AIM shutting down? I miss the old IMing days, this was the thing to do back in middle school/early high school.

...you can customize almost every sound - dialing, messaging, getting a call, etc. - within the Options menu.

MSN brings back memories. Hilarious and terrible memories.

Used it from late elementary school to midway through college a few years ago. I forgot to log in one day, and it was nice having silence while on the computer, and just kept it off. Then I reinstalled Windows and just didn't bother to install it.

Remember when having an avatar and a custom background was a HUGE deal?!

I use the 2008? Version of messenger to log into my email. That's about it.
I've been getting a pop up telling me to change to skyp for a while but man I dunno

I think Skype can act as a Facebook chat client. So if they go Skype you can talk to them via Facebook

I have a Skype account, and I used it once. I don't like that I can't deactivate or close that account, considering I don't think I'll have any further use for it.

Being able to close accounts should be mandatory for most sites.

Well, I'm always "busy" (or is it away?) so I won't hear any sounds. But even the login sound makes me cringe D:

I don't like this,
I use Adium for all my IM communication. It uses libpurple like Pidgin, the only solution I can find now for skype is a plugin which requires skype to be running. This is not acceptable... FML
