I just merged accounts and am using Skype.

This thing is a fucking disaster...awful layout, huge ads, it didn't even merge my contacts list at all after it says it did. Fuck this.

This is going to be a FUCKING DEBACLE for Microsoft (and us).

The lack of image sharing is going to make enterprise flip the fuck out.

GOD DAMN IT

why don't they just incorporate the MSN chat with skype? MSN is a damn good IM client and I'm going to miss the hell out of it:(

when my computer is on, I'm signed into MSN. Always.

Ugh, I tried to make the jump last year when rumblings of this first started. I couldnt because Skype is so shitty for IM's. God damn it. Microsoft why have you made everything worse since post-W7. WHY.

Seems this has been extended to the 8th April

So that's why I can still use MSN... Are they shutting down the protocol and everything or just the client? Can I still use Pidgin or will I have to switch to Skype? Skype sucks for plain IMs...

Damn I remember I signed up for it a few days after it went live. I had gotten so many friends to use it as well and it's how I primarily chatted with this girl I liked after she went on vacation in the summer after we graduated from elementary school.

I stopped using it around 2006-ish, but I still use my Hotmail account everyday and I think I've had the same one since 1997-ish. Almost 16+ years with the same free email address, I think I signed up for it from a public library when I was 10.

Skype's fine for plain IMs, I've had a group where me and my friends have talked for months by IM and audio and we've never had any issues with IM

they're forcing hotmail accounts into outlook accounts now too. my two junk hotmails have been switched but my primary is still untouched. they dont automatically give you the @outlook address when they merge you so i imagine thats going to cause all sorts of problems.

i havent switched to skype yet either. i hate that they dont let you change your skype user name even though your login is your email. so stupid

Microsoft has Microsoft Lync now for enterprise / corporate dealios.

I think my company forgot they had a Linux department when they introduced Lync. I either need to have a vm or be remoted into a terminal server at work to use it, so I don't.

I think theres a plugin for pidgin that at least enables the text chat, but why use it at all if half your company is cut off?

My friends dropped Messenger in I'd guess 2007 and I never used anything except IRC (Facebook chat later and now) in a major way (I did use MSN through Bitlbee though) so no big loss for me.

FB chat is pretty nice too now that you can upload files and whatnot too. I also really like the Metro Skype though I only use it to call my gf every now and then.

I've been using Trillian for years at home so I don't really mind. Doesn't change anything for me if I use the Skype plugin of GTalk plugin instead of the MSN.

However, anybody knows how this will affect Microsoft Office Communicator? We use that for internal IMs at work and AFAIK it's using the MSN backend. It's especially nice since you can add external hotmail addresses and talk to people outside on MSN. Dunno if you can add skype ids on there?

RIP. Good times had in the early to mid 00's but I really stopped using it properly after that, just logged in once in a while to see who was on.
