Man. I remember as a kid, it was so much fun when I got my very first email and started using MSN like crazy. I still use the email but only talk to my uncle from there. I still have all the former people I used to talk to on there. crazy memories.

I logged in some time ago, no one online except for two people. Depressing.

I'd probably use Skype/instant messaging again if a majority of my friends did as well.

Just curious, why do people feel skype for one on one IM'ing is bad? like whats wrong with it?

Lack of custom emoticons, for one. Obviously if you're not an emoticon type talker, then its no big deal, but judging by some of the posts here (mine included), its a big issue.

Not just your regular emoticons, you have animated ones, too.

What about Windows 8/WP8 built in Messenger? There is also that POS Messenger in Xbox but I don't care about it so never mind.

Oh good, they got it working finally. I signed into skype with my hotmail account (since I just still use MSN solely through inertia) a while back and it didn't load any contacts. Looks like they got around to fixing it, though now I don't know if I'll be signing in as often (or leaving it to just be on).

Hopefully they will update the Skype clients to they are actually useful with the messenger protocol.

ICQ for life!

Actually been using Skype exclusively for a few years so this changes nothing for me

I don't like this,
I use Adium for all my IM communication. It uses libpurple like Pidgin, the only solution I can find now for skype is a plugin which requires skype to be running. This is not acceptable... FML

I recently moved to Trillian which actually has Skype support(gtalk+skype+facebook chat all in one, so handy) and doesn't require it to be installed. Turns out the app is great as well.

The way this works is you keep all the MSN contacts, they go into Skype when you sign into the same MS account you used for MSN.

So you dont loose anything...

MSN (the program) was shit anmyways

Man, Im still using msn as one of my friends refuse to move to anything else. I must say though, when it comes to text chat it's much better than Skype.

Wow yea I'm a bit bummed by this. Good times were had since I started using it in 2001. But I've noticed usage has been less and less by my friends and I havent logged on to it too much recently myself.

We still use AIM at my office, which makes people at my school give me weird looks when I talk to people at the office over it.

That's a real shame. I'm use my MSN account daily since it's compatible with Pidgin/Miranda/Adium. The Skype client is bloated, ugly and unstable so I only boot that up if I need to make a call.

I still use MSN, but Facebook chat mixed in with a bit of Steam chat have taken over a lot more. I can't imagine Skype being the next big thing for chat though because its chat interface was pretty terrible last time I used it. I still think of Skype as a voice and video chatting program, not text.

The other big disadvantage of Skype is that it's not an open platform, which means you're not going to get alternative Skype clients like you can currently get alternatives to MSN (or Live Messenger I should say). You won't be able to get a multi-client that is compatible with Skype.

MSN was great, still is better than Facebook chat because it has never failed to send/receive a message for me when I have an internet connection.

Shame they're doing this, I doubt I'll use Skype.

I still use it daily and I don't want Skype running just for something as simple as IM. Thankfully I only have a couple of friends still on it so I can probably convince them to go to Google Talk or some other alternative, and I use Adium so it's not like it's going to be a big change to switch protocol.

Anyone old enough to still remember to good olden days of ICQ, I think I still remember my number as well, at least the first 5 digits I'm sure of.

Now there was a messaging service!

-edit: OMG, it still exists

Heh, I still use AIM and MSN from time to time. I've already merged my MSN with Skype, so no biggie for me. I use Skype mostly to talk with my clients overseas though...

The Skype metro app in Windows 8 looks pretty nice but still no P2P files support.

Useless shit.

It'll still work with Facebook chat, at least. I wonder if Microsoft's getting rid of their web messenger services too?

Everyone of my age used this for years, it was the best way outside of text messages of catching up with friends.

It even survived the MySpace boom and bust years, before Facebook came along, killed MySpace, and one by one my friends started using Facebook and slowly not using MSN messenger anymore. That was like 4 years ago too.

Just tried to use Skype with my messenger id. It blocked some friends, and I can't unblock them from Skype and it instructs me to unblock them from messenger. Only problem is that they aren't blocked on messenger. Then it lost a bunch of people and added some people I had deleted ages ago. Fantastic.

Edit: fuck it, I'll just have to make a new Skype account and use it through Trillian, I don't have that many active friends on messenger anyhow.

I used to use MSN so much, I remembered every sound from that video. Did anyone else use MSN Explorer? Younger me thought built in messenger was awesome :lol I think they started charging for it eventually though.

I have two friends I still talk to via MSN, despite also having contact with them on other services. Welp, GTalk from now on!

The ICQ/AIM servers are still up and running. I haven't heard anything about the services being shut down. I haven't used ICQ in a couple of years, though.
